In state hoops recruiting

May 9, 2021, 7:57 PM

Just noticed that SC had four 4 star or higher recruits within the state.

Look at how many of the 4 stars stayed in state. Look at the number of 4 or 5 stars that stayed in state and or came to Clemson in the last 10yrs. Im guessing 10%-15% which is horrible, especially for a state that doesnt produce much top talent. If SC produced 10-20 per yer then you would expect that number to be lower but we should be all over the top recruits in SC every year. Of course you are not going to get them all, but with 3-5 per year produced in SC, I would hope 30-45% would play for one of the 2 larger uni's in the state.

The best of what this state produces in basketball

will be attending NEBRASKA, FSU, MARYLAND, XAVIER...

SERIOUSLY, what do Nebraska, Maryland and Xavier have to offer that Clemson does not??

Judge Keller®, we've chatted about the fsu pick up, what's the info on the 'braska, maryland eastern shore and xavier recruiting wins in SC?

I am wondering if you expect a blanket response meaning one statement to explain all four players? Everyone wants one nice neat explanation to explain everything but recruiting does not work that way. Did these young men grow up in SC or did they move here? Did their AAU coach have ties to the college coach where they signed? Parent(s) an alum of their chosen school? Were they looking for a college experience away from home?

If you really want a good answer you will need to do some digging to find out what factors influenced their individual decisions.

I don't understand the intent behind posts like yours

May 10, 2021, 12:57 PM [ in reply to The best of what this state produces in basketball ]

other than to antagonize and insinuate that our basketball coaches aren't doing a good job.

To answer your question:

Bryce McGowens was recruited by us, and we offered him a scholarship early on (fall 2018). He developed a good relationship with Steve Smith. When we fired Smith in May 2019, we reportedly backed off of McGowens at that time since we wanted nothing to do with Coach Smith or anyone he had recruited. FSU soon hired Steve Smith. McGowens eventually committed to FSU, but then decommitted. McGowens's older brother, Trey, transferred from Pitt to Nebraska. That is the main reason why Bryce ended up at Nebraska.

John Butler was also recruited by us. We offered him a scholarship in fall 2018. Again, he was recruited by Steve Smith, who we subsequently fired. Interestingly (coincidentally?) he also ended up committing to Florida State. My understanding is that Butler was one of those guys who didn't want to stay close to home. I don't believe he really ever considered Clemson. I honestly think he made a good decision to go to FSU, with their reputation for signing and developing 7 footers in recent years. Butler is tall, but really thin and really raw. He's a project, and not a guy who is likely to come in and contribute much his first year or two.

Ike Cornish is from Baltimore but who played at Legacy Charter in Greenville, SC (along with McGowens). We recruited him some but did not offer him, because he had no intention of staying in the southeast for college. You can see this based on his offer list which includes Maryland, Georgetown, Virginia Tech, St. John's, etc. If you want to consider him a South Carolina player you can, but for all intents and purposes he was a Maryland player.

Cesare Edwards was recruited by us. Antonio Reynolds Dean recruited him, and we offered him on an in-person visit in February 2020. He really liked us, although Xavier was his favorite at that time. I suppose Xavier built an early lead for some reason. I don't know beyond this.

A bigger issue than the one you created, is that South Carolina doesn't have much in the way of high major talent. Using the link you shared, the state of South Carolina produced just one top 50 player and two top 100 players nationally. To have one five star, and three four stars, with the rest of the in-state talent being three stars at best shows just how insignificant South Carolina basketball is on a national level. There simply isn't very much talent to go around, even if we dominated the state the way you seem to think we should.

If we want to get any recruit we want, we need to do the following:

-Continue to enhance our facilities. Patting ourselves on the back for updating facilities a few years ago to get them from among the worst in the ACC to mid-tier/top 1/3rd at best is great, but we need outstanding facilities to make up for our poor basketball history and the perception that Clemson doesn't care about basketball.
-Give Brownell a higher budget for assistant coaches. It is currently below the national average (not ACC average, mind you, but national average. He does a great job hiring coaches that fall within that budget, but to expect an ace recruiter or two to work magic at a school like Clemson within those salary constraints is asking a lot.
-Continue making the NCAA Tournament regularly. This is critical to show that we not only compete in a good basketball conference, but succeed in it to the point that we are nationally relevant.

I hope this helps.

Georgetown also found a diamond in the rough in SC, they found him and made the offer...

So what?

May 10, 2021, 1:03 PM

He played at the Citadel, not a major college basketball school. Let's not act like he's a huge difference maker at the high major level. If he goes to Georgetown and sets the world on fire, I'm happy to concede that he was a guy we should've gotten. But for now, please realize that Georgetown is replacing over half of its roster this offseason. They are desperate for bodies to fill out their roster. We can afford to be choosier in our situation.

Re: So what?

Georgetown is and has been a big dumpsterfire for a while now. It has been what, six/seven years since their last winning conference record and that is in a obliterated BigEast.

Even if you only take their last 10 years, they have been on "our current level". Only about 4 dances (They get invited at 21-11 or 20-11 and we don't) and if it was not for being a 9-12 8th seed covid champion, it would be worse and Ewing would be gone. This is from a program that NC/Final Fours are expected. They are in the woods...

Keep in mind, Georgetown's footaball DII plays on their lacrosse field. Basketball (and soccer) is all that matter for that school. I used to attend the Hoyas games when I lived in DC (during III's decline). I would wear my Clemson gear especially when they played DePaul....

so, you don't think that we have some holes to fill on our roster? Youngstown State is in no better position in CBB than Citadel... can't believe you're downplaying any opportunity to get better... that's what... LOL

I suggest you see how everything shakes out before whining and complaining.

May 17, 2021, 7:43 PM

I feel really good about the transfers we have so far. I see no reason to doubt our coaches. If they didn’t want the guy from Citadel, then I trust them.

Like him or not, Brownell has shown during his Clemson tenure that he can get some really good players through the transfer market. I’d trust him on this if I were you.

The Citadel was @50 places higher in both NET and RPI rankings than Youngstown State this year but JK would have you believe Youngstown is one of the perennial mid major powerhouses while The Citadel is beneath the attention of our coaches.

As usual, you misrepresent someone else’s post in order to attack it.

May 17, 2021, 10:24 PM

Bohannon was sought by over 30 schools this offseason. We wanted him, and we got him. That shows that a bunch of schools think he has major upside and can contribute for them next year.

My understanding is that we did not want the guy from Citadel. Thus, I’m not going to lose sleep over not getting a guy that plays in the SoCon when our coaches didn’t want him.

I’m sorry if you really wanted him at Clemson and he broke your heart by choosing Georgetown, but I’m going to trust our coaches on this one.

Except that you said none of that and attacked the Citadel as not a basketball power - neither is Youngstown State. Equivalence noted. Your mistake as usual. And I’m actually a Clemson fan not reliant on Brownell’s paycheck. But nice to see you buddying up with the deluded wingnut section of the fan base.

I think it’s pretty much the definition of a footnote to this basketball season. How many years back can you name who the 5th place team was in the ACC without looking it up?
