So we passed on West Virginia, a flagship university

Nov 28, 2012, 12:31 AM

that would have kept the league contiguous, due to academics. And we turn around and accept Louisville. Time for Clemson to get out and go anywhere that will take us.

the bigeast is looking...

you think we have a chance?

WVU might have been a good addition, at least for the criminal justice departments at ACC schools.

They have an endemic problem solving crimes in WVa:
All the DNA matches and there aren't any dental records.

Hate to say it, but the slur against WVA by the ACC

Nov 28, 2012, 6:24 AM

smelled to me of the effete elitism, which Clemson people have always complained against the Tobacco Road schools. We eventually invited Pitt and IMO missed on a chance to contain within the ACC one of the greatest rivalries in the east: Pitt and WVA. And, yeah, I know about the academic standards blah, blah, blah. I just don't like Clemson adopting snobbish airs, which usually reaches around eventually to bite a$$es!

I agree, hartins. I'm all for the ACC considering academics

Nov 28, 2012, 8:55 AM

when making additions, but West Virginia is a great geographic fit, they wanted in bad, they have great rivalries with Pitt and VT and could have had one with Maryland.

Also, by NOT letting them in, you gave the Big 12 their ONLY "eastern state" alternative that was at all attractive to them, creating the situation where Clemson and FSU were considering adding to an "eastern division" of the Big 12.

A big miss in my opinion. No offense to Louisville.

West Virginia, a flagship university? I never thought I

Nov 28, 2012, 7:41 AM

ever hear those two words in the same sentence!

The flagship of the state of West Virginia. You might not

Nov 28, 2012, 8:52 AM

respect West Virginia as a state, but would you argue that some other university deserves that title?

You missed it Bubba! I never said anything about the State!

Nov 28, 2012, 9:00 AM

My comment was toward the university alone. I remember when it was little more than a diploma mill and not certain if it has progessed much passed that now.

No worries. I just know that's what he meant and of course

Nov 28, 2012, 9:02 AM

no other university in the state could make that claim.

The point you make is true...

Nov 28, 2012, 7:53 AM

and what it shows is the standing of the conference now as opposed to 04 (I think) when BC, VT and Miami joined. If you don't think the ACC is in a mad scramble after considering Louisville you are not a realist.

Re: The point you make is true...

Louisville has a bigger budget and is more profitable (athletics) than Clemson and Forbes values their bball program higher than UNC's. Not too bad of an addition.

Here were my reasons I gave why we should add them:

Kind of.

Nov 28, 2012, 8:54 AM

But the ACC was never going to pick WVU over Syracuse and those were the options at the time.
