Catawba River. I was at Joonyer's when my buddy from the summer camp on the island texted me, but just saw him a few minutes ago heading down to the camp and he stopped to give me the scoop. A guy decided he was going to tow his young son and niece on floats behind his kayak down the river. Nobody wearing a life jacket, of course, but the man in the kayak was wearing waders. Like a trout fisherman or a duck hunter would wear.
WADERS.
Flipped the kayak, waders filled up, and they found his body an hour or so later. The kids were OK, but again...
WADERS.

For real though, sorry for those kids and that family. That don't make no sense at all.

The Catawba River has gotten to be a very people recreation activity. I can remember paddling my kayak on the river not long ago and never see another paddler all summer long. Now, I regularly see people on pool floats toeing coolers of beer. Getting a ticket for being on the river without a life jacket does NOT stop people. At all.

When we were at Lake Norman, they said that they were having more drowning deaths than usual. I assume its attributed to more boats, people and my gosh that lake can become one huge ocean inlet by 4pm on a Saturday.
I always think drowning or on set on fire would be the worst deaths.

To me, drowning would be more peaceful. Being set on fire seems infinitely more painful. The worst to me though, by far, would be being buried alive. My heart races just thinking about it.
Feel terrible for the family though. A peaceful, happy day turning dark and morbid in a snap. That’s terrible...

$149 kayaks, you'll see far more of it. No training, nobody drilling water safety into people, and not enough enforcement on the water. Luckily, there are at least vigilant officers watching out for boats getting too close to the beach at Sullivan's Island, which is a heinous crime I liken with gang activity and terrorism.
