Or sign 55 in this next class. Or compete with 30 scholarship players.

Ladson and Puma.

I don't understand the Ladson transfer. He plays and even starts when healthy. Another school isn't going to magically make him not injured for 9 games every season.

Seems like the portal ruining college football is a common

innernet opinion. Same with NIL.
Curious....why do you think it's ruining the game?
I mean, it's different. I don't like it. But ruining the game? Seems like a leap to me. Aside from Clemson not going undefeated, it's been a GREAT year of CFB. Parity seems to be prevailing more this year than before.
Ya'll 'splain yourselves please.

Take Riley for example
Dec 3, 2021, 3:32 PM

|
left on a whim and taking what seems to be half the team with him. OU invested time and money into recruiting and educating those kids and poof...gone.
Not to mention it completely ruins the idea of working hard and earning anything.
College sports should be about loyalty to your university, hard work, teaching life lessons. Instead, this just allows more and more of the entitlement that is ruining everything in society, now including college football.
Obviously, this is just my opinion, but I hate it. I think it is a cop-out.

He's flipped some recruits for sure and that will always be a part of the game. That's not portal related. How many current OU players are confirmed to be leaving AND going to USC? Is this number even greater than 0?
You DO know that OU (nor any other school) isn't as committed to the players as you are asking the players to be to them right? Schollies are 1 year contracts, yet you want a 4 year contract from the player. Makes no sense. I think CU does a good job of honoring the contracts but we are the exception rather than the norm.
Lincoln Riley leaving and taking all the players with him simply isn't true unless I've overlooked something.

as I understand it, there are more players in the portal

than there are schollys available. So a lot of players are being blindly optimistic, and overlooking their future PT based on improving their skills, injuries, guys ahead of them going portal, asteroid strikes, etc. Guys that even programs with a culture of running off those they think they don't need would keep.
And, college teams need to be able to have reasonable expectations about their roster. Programs shouldn't have to deal with massive exodus of non-starters, esp starters who expect to be non-starters.
And, it promotes not stiving to achieve and taking the easier path.
So, that's it for starters.
I'm not totally against any form of portal, but there needs to be tweeks to the current policy.

Funny thing about the portal too...

the star rating is the player's evaluation coming out of high school. Seems like the recruiting industry would re-rank those in the portal more realistically. I wonder how many people think Taisun Phommachanh is still worthy of a 4-star ranking? No doubt he's a serviceable QB in the right system, but from what I've seen of him at Clemson, that might be a stretch on his current ranking. I say this purely from a 'recruiting as a business' view, and not what I think his actual ranking might or might not be.

day, so I missed this. THE Quinn Ewers?? The guy who was first place to our second place QB recruit? The poster child of NIL? The guy who left school early to get NIL even though is folks said they 'didn't need the money'? That guy?? He's transferring without ever taking a snap? LOL. That is just hilarious.

How is ruining college football? The people that transfer are usually not major parts of their program or have graduated.

Here’s what’s gonna be interesting as a Clemson fan.

We hear a lot about the draw of the Clemson family atmosphere, and I think it plays a huge part in our recruiting. No doubt also from time to time it matters enough to some players like Christian Wilkins so come back for a year that they really didn’t need to play to get a high draft pick.
It’s gonna be curious though to see how much it matters to existing players when they aren’t mandated by a governing body to be here. For a lot of them it doesn’t seem to matter, and it makes me wonder if Dabo (and every other coach for that matter) is now going to have to spend more time worrying about keeping the 2nd string happy.

No one has ever been made to stay they just had the one-year deterrent that does not exist now.
It’s new, everyone is doing it, and it’s on social media.
Give it time and I legitimately think it will calm down.
A track record is being built of decisions turning out poorly and scholarships potentially not being available for some.
The good ones will have to present state media relentlessly showing data about how transfers actually work out.
Good ones will adapt, other ones will not. Nick Saban will stay on top.
