So the Front Page story says Ohio St was the FSU replacement

Dec 11, 2013, 11:29 PM

And we were picked as an at-large. If you aren't going to replace the ACC Champion with an ACC team, why would you not pick Bama? You can pick them ahead of the Sugar because you have first pick. Its not like the Sugar is going to pick OSU over Bama? I only see two options...

1. The were scared to take Bama away from the Sugar.

2. They thought Ohio State-Clemson was a better game than Bama-Clemson.

Things that make you go "Hmmmmm"...

permission to select Alabama, which the Sugar Bowl most certainly would not have given.

Because the Sugar Bowl lost their SEC representative (Auburn), they had first right to an SEC team if they wanted it.

Dec 12, 2013, 6:19 AM

Here's another thing. Mentioned this before but worth repeating, Clemson and Oklahoma can both thank whoever beat Northern Illinois as NIU would have qualified for an automatic bid and one of the at large teams would not have gotten in.

What was the other team that had a shot....Fresno State? They lost a couple of weeks ago but had they not both OU and Clemson may be without a BCS bid.

Clemson is in either way. Orange had the next pick after...

Dec 12, 2013, 12:16 PM

The Sugar replaced Auburn. So the Orange Bowl picked OSU, then the Sugar picked Bama, then the Orange picked Clemson. If NIU had won against Bowling Green then the Sugar would have been forced to pick between UCF and NIU, likely picking UCF. The Fiesta would have been stuck with Baylor vs NIU.

I think you are correct about that. There was probably never anything to worry about regarding not getting into Orange.

The non AQ teams getting in if they hadn't lost. BCS rules only make the BCS pick the highest ranking non AQ school if finishing in the top 14. So only the higher of the 2 would have been picked. The fiesta had last pick so they would have been stuck w the non AQ team. Clemson would have still gotten picked bc of ACC ties. OK would have been the team left out.

Dec 12, 2013, 1:59 PM

Only two from the same conference allowed in a BCS bowl. Auburn won the conference, so they're automatic, that leaves just one other team from the SEC allowed in the BCS, and the Sugar elected to pick Alabama.

The Orange bowl had first replacement of qualified teams to replace FSU. They couldn't pick Alabama, because the #2 team was an SEC team, so they would need the Sugar Bowl's permission to pick them. So their first pick (the replacement of FSU), was Ohio State, they did not have to pick an ACC team. The Sugar Bowl took Alabama to replace Auburn.

At that point the Orange Bowl had to choose their next selection out of the potential pool (Oregon, Oklahoma, Clemson, Oklahoma State, Arizona State, or UCF). They chose Clemson, not because they had to, but because they thought that would bring them the most amount of money.

The Sugar Bowl then had to pick from the remaining potential pool (Oregon, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Arizona State, or UCF) and chose Oklahoma.

The Fiesta Bowl then had no choice because UCF is an automatic qualifier, so they were forced to pick them.

Missouri and South Carolina were not eligible due to Auburn and Alabama already being selected/qualified...

Had Northern Illinois won and was in the top 14, they would've been an automatic qualifier. Which means that the Orange Bowl's selections would've been (Oregon, Oklahoma, Clemson, Oklahoma State, Arizona State, UCF, or NIU). They would've still picked us. The thing that changed would've been the Sugar Bowl would have to pick either UCF or NIU, and then the Fiesta Bowl would've gotten the other.

Wow. That is a really good recap, and all correct. With the slight exception that Alabama was an automatic selection for being in the top 4 of BCS. As soon as they only dropped to 4 after the Iron Bowl, the 2 BCS reps from the SEC were finalized.

South Carolina baseball since 1975: 31 NCAA Tournament appearances including a streak of 14 straight / 12 Super Regional appearances/ 11 College World Series berths / 5 National Championship game appearances / National Champions in 2010 and 2011. The Gamecocks hold 3 NCAA records for postseason success: The most consecutive NCAA tournament wins (22) / The most consecutive wins in the College World Series (12) / The most consecutive home NCAA tournament wins (29).
Since 1992 The Gamecocks have competed in the SEC and have 4 SEC titles / 1 SEC tournament title / 7 SECE titles.

They also got passed by Mizzou. BCS can have two teams from a conference plus a national championship game. So really three or four if both BCS were playing in NC.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is very incorrect. There is only one scenario where

Dec 12, 2013, 3:41 PM

you can have more than 2 teams in BCS bowls.

No more than two teams from a conference may be selected, regardless of whether they are automatic qualifiers or at-large selections, unless two non-champions from the same conference are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the final BCS Standings.

http://www.bcsfootball.org/news/story?id=4819597

Completely far fetched for it to ever happen, but it would be akin to magically having Alabama #1, Missouri #2, and Auburn winning the SEC. National championship would be Alabama v. Mizzou and Auburn would be in Sugar Bowl. That is the ONLY way more than 2 teams from the same conference can be in a BCS bowl.

SC was ahead by 1 spot, so they actually still could have been chosen by Orange bowl Over Clemson. The rule is two teams from a conference unless they are playing in NC.
