Opt-Outs vs Transfers

Dec 6, 2022, 3:45 PM

Apparently there is some confusion.

An "opt-out" (by the media's definition) is someone who is part of the football team but chooses not to play in the bowl game so they can "prepare for the draft" and not risk injury during the bowl game and subsequently hurt their draft chances. They're still on the team. They frequently still attend the bowl game and are on the sidelines. They have just opted not to play in that bowl game.

A transfer is someone who leaves the program. Period. They will not be at the bowl game. They will not be on the sidelines. They are no longer on the football team. They have decided to leave their current school in hopes of a better opportunity at another school.

Big difference between the two. I get the confusion - either way, they're not playing in the bowl game. But the distinction is that the opt-outs are still a part of the team and the program while the transfers are not.

Any questions? (that was a rhetorical question)

If you're not going to play, you don't need to be there

Yeah, Pickett looked weak in Pitts bowl game last year watching his team struggle and lose. Why go if you’re not going to help your team?

In my eyes they are the same. When you say I'm not playing with the team because I am looking out for myself then you are no longer part of the team either in my book. I would rather see a transfer on the sideline not playing instead of a QUITTER. Just my take.

A transfer is looking for a better opportunity - more playing time, different scheme, NIL $$, etc. They are looking to continue their NCAA career.

An opt-out is avoiding playing time to prevent injury in preparation for the NFL draft.

They are not similar IMO. And the fact that Clemson continually has few-to-no opt-outs is yet another highlighter of our culture.

Another difference is a transfer portal guy is expecting to play college football somewhere next year. Opt-outs are not.

Let me be a little more clear. I meant that I don't want either of them on the sidelines after they make their decision. It is a distraction to the team at that point.

I’ll add.

Opt outs are typically star players that will have a significant negative impact on our chance to beat the dehydrated-urine-colored team from Tenn.

None of Clemson’s portal departures (so far) fit in that category. I admit you could argue possible impact if there are injuries prior to or in the game.

For example: the coot’s loss of Bell is not the same as our loss of Bentley. No matter how much certain trolls in Clemson colors want to argue otherwise, transfers of 3rd string players is not the same as Myles Murphy opting out.

P.S. I have no idea if we’ll have some opt outs for the Orange bowl.

Trolls don't take the time to understand what was said -

they just twist what was said and then pounce.

"I get the confusion" - There was no confusion, just folks who wanted to mouth off.

So Opt outs still get an orange bowl ring and portals don't

Dec 6, 2022, 4:49 PM

after we beat the fake orange. I'm ok with that.

They have opted out to prepare for the pros so they did not technically quit but they did. As far as my definition I think they are saying I’m prepping for the draft and I’m finished with college football. Either way you want to spin it transfers and opt outs will not be at Clemson next Fall.
