Isley Brothers / Ernie Isley ... his work on Who's the Lady.
Overlooked guitar genius.
(I prefer the original Isley Brothers version, but this video features Ernie sans the other brothers.)

I don't know how he was as a guitarist, but you have to

include him 'just because'. His discography is very short, less than 30 songs, due to his short life, but I read somewhere that if contracts then had been like they are now, and if he had kept rights to those few songs, his heirs would be worth something like a billion dollars. We wouldn't have blues as we know it if not for him.

What I mean is recording in his day was poor. He has style and timing but the recordings are not too good. I have him in LP, CD, and file. I am a fan. Too bad there are not more of his work to play.
What some "expert" says is OK, but I rate differently. Is that OK?

Guys like Clapton have only heard the recordings we have. Now if you say Clapton is the best ever, I would be OK with your choice.
Blues guitar is my fav guitar. Many great stringers are known more for vocals (including Johnson). Guys like Howlin', Muddy, and even Buddy Guy play excellent guitar. My favorite with simple acoustic Blues is Mississippi John Hurt. He is better than RJ.

Can't really compare someone of that era to someone of even the 60s. They just didn't have the sound equipment. But we were talking about forgotten guitarists.

No worries - I just listed him because I saw a documentary on him a couple of years ago and then started listening to him. I don't think he is the greatest guitarist of all time and wouldn't crack my top 5. I just thought he was a guitarist a lot of people may not recognize, due to how far back he goes.

A good documentary out there about him, called The Search for Robert Johnson'. Apparently, he was trying to play the juke joints, but typically wasn't considered good enough. He disappeared for about a year and came back killing it. That's how the rumor got started that this guy must have sold his soul. He didn't last long, because he was murdered before he turned 30. Pretty interesting documentary.

list, but you have to od for Rolling Stone to look at you, and imdb has Johnny Winter way down at 63. And they have Wille Nelson in there, but not Tommy. Okay. I get that Willie is a great song writer. And Dale is a great driver. Willie and Tommy are not in the same arena when it come to guitar.

Embarrassed to admit that I did not know of Tommy Emmanuel before your posting, Owensb01.
It's like I had just been born. Out of this world and into another. Just unreal.
OK, got to go and find my head ... it's rolling around in the kitchen somewhere.

I'll throw out a few unique ones that aren't household names
May 8, 2022, 8:21 PM

there's a BUNCH, but I'll stop at 3 of my favorites, all very different in their own way.
Rocky George - Suicidal Tendencies, Fishbone Unique quality: played a 7-string guitar (one BETTER than a 6-string!). Black dude in a thrash rock band is pretty rare. Thought about Vernon Reid here instead, but I think he's too well-known, at least critically.
https://youtu.be/nxcJW6bs5os
Rod "The Bottle" Price - Foghat (RIP) Unique quality: Magician with the slide guitar. Foghat's signature sound, that slide. This video was in his later years, but still shows how uniquely great this sound was.
https://youtu.be/2nwOBaH--kA
Warner Hodges - Jason & the Scorchers, Drivin'n'Cryin, Dan Baird & Homemade Sin, + others. Unique quality: can do it all...rock, country, punk, you name it. Can play Hank or Sabbath with same tenacity. As nice a guy as he is a guitarist. Defines the term "Guitar Slinger" with his patented slingshot move. Freaking tornado on stage, as video shows.

Audley Freed and Mick Ronson
May 8, 2022, 11:20 PM

Audley was in Cry of Love, Sheryl Crow’s band, Black Crowes, etc…. Here’s a vid of him killing it with Peter Frampton a few years ago—he starts at 4:15.
https://youtu.be/XRjhcOa_nAY
If you like David Bowie’s sound from the 70’s, you like Mick Ronson. Guy was a genius who composed and arranged most of Bowie’s 70’s hits but never got co-writing credit or much in the way of royalties. Died from cancer I believe in 92 or 93.

I think my waning interest in WSP is because he played such a huge part in the sound of the songs before his death. They went from a lot more laid back and mellow, even when they were upbeat songs, to a lot more frantic, traditional blues-rock sounding songs.
I sort of wish they'd do one of those tours where they celebrate the 30th anniversary of Everyday or something and play it start to finish, followed by a bunch of early greatest hits. Yeah, it'd be a money grab but I'd dig it. Ribs and Whiskey just doesn't do it for me the way Diner does and it never will.
