So is Watson going to redshirt?

I would imagine he'll be our #2 QB, but do we try to RS him and only play him if Stoudt gets hurt or do we let him play in blowout games to give him experience

I hope he redshirts, but don't think he will. We'll burn

his redshirt to give him playing time whenever we're up by 30 against teams.
It is also possible he could earn the start, but not sure.

before the season? The schedule suggest only 2 blowout games. Getting him snaps in those maybe wouldn't be worth having the extra year. Can prepare as the #2 but call it a redshirt year if ends up playing 0 snaps?

I hate to say it, but I think this is a Willie Simmons -

Charlie Whitehurst type of deal. I would not be surprised to see Watson be the starter at some point if we stumble. I could be wrong, it has happened once or twice.

declare a redshirt before the season starts. If we HAVE to use Watson, we have to. I am wanting to know if we can be prepared to use him, then say he was a redshirt if we don't.

You can declare a redshirt as late as the second game I

think. The problem is that somebody has to be picked to take the majority of the reps for the second team in August. If you are 3 deep, you redshirt, 2 deep, you don't.

As in 'if you don't play a single snap all year in your true frosh year, you are just automatically considered an RS Frosh the next year'.
Could be wrong - digging on the NCAA site now.

The thing some of you guys are forgetting is that someone has to run the scout team. If you decide to redshirt Watson, he'll have to run the scout team. That means he won't be practicing Morris' offense. Then next year, he'd be taking the reins with only two spring practices (one shortened due to injury) of running the actual offense. There's no way we can do that. The only thing you could hope for is that you prep him as the second string QB this year and hope Cole doesn't have to miss any snaps this year. That's unlikely though.

I think it would be dumb to play him at all. Why waste a year on a few snaps vs cupcakes?? Watson has the talent to step in next year and do well without a few snaps in mop up duty. Look at Winston. Unless stoudt gets hurt he should def. redshirt IMO

Absolutely no way you can redshirt Watson now

Watson will have to get 2nd team reps and be ready to play. The odds of a QB making it through a whole season without needing to come out even for a few series due to injury is extremely low.

We have other QB's. Buring a year of Watson for those reasons is crazy.

Redshirting is no longer an option for DW. He's playing this year, and he will or should get significant snaps. To run The Chad's offense, your QB has to be strong and durable enough to take hits from the designed QB runs. Tajh could take it b/c he had the body build of a fullback, and was automatically our #1 short yardage option. Cole is quicker than people think, but he isn't as strong as Tajh, and I don't see him lasting 12 games' worth of hits and poundings without having to come out for at least a few series. Even Tajh had to do that.
Say what you want about Schuessler, and I'm not in any way knocking him at all. He'll be a solid depth guy, but this offense isn't built for him. It's built for Watson. We need his arm and perhaps most of all, his legs. Weight gain must be a MAJOR PRIORITY for him in the offseason. Needs to put on good mass if he's going to be a reliable #2 ... and eventual #1.
Long story short, I saw DW playing this year even with Chad still on the team. Now I'm all but certain of it.
