So is UNC really going to be good in football this season?

Feb 8, 2014, 9:56 AM

I keep seeing predictions that UNC will be ranked in top 20 and just saw a "post signing day poll" that had them the 2nd highest ranked team in ACC.

Given how badly USM has looked since Fedora left maybe he is just that good of a coach but do they have the returning talent to be a force this season?

Renner is gone I believe. I know Williams played some at qb but his passing stats aren't impressive....he was their leading rusher and they get their starting rb back.

Just curious if anyone knows anything about UNC's potential for next season. Besides FSU, Clemson, Miami and VT, UNC is the most likely ACC school to step up and be a serious football power. If Fedora does have them playing good football next year it will be a big boost to the ACC.

UNC has talented players and all the fans that I come in contact with (to many) believe the coaching staff to be the 'best ever'! Their recruiting class was good, especially with the addition of Hood, but not superior. imo. The mighty heels must learn to win in football. I don't know if the coaching staff is that good!

With all the nonsense that is still going at that not so great university, they may still be sanctioned the big boys. I doubt that however.

In the meantime ... who cares!

They're still basking in their Belk Bowl win. Nothing to see here.

The team we hung 60 on in DV two years ago was supposed to be good as well.

Sports writers have incredibly short term memories which is a coping mechanism for how wrong they usually are. UNC was supposed to be good last year too. A fair number of writers picked UNC to upset Scar and most thought it would be competitive. Then UNC crapped the bed and sucked for half the season. Then they go on a little streak at the end and they are potential world beaters again. I also love the inconsistency from the same writers. Clemson is overrated by going 7-1 against inferior competition. UNC goes 4-4 against a weaker ACC schedule but because they strung a few in a row at the end they somehow should be ranked ahead of Clemson preseason? Despite both teams suffering similar key personnel losses. Beating Cinncinati in a home game certainly is more impressive than beating Ohio State in a BCS bowl. Ridiculous.

excellent post and right on target....

it has amazed even me that unc was able to have a decent recruiting year, considering they're already on probation and have a scandal ongoing that certainly may result in further penalties. But, IMO, they're no better than VaTech who's program has slipped considerably the last couple of years and the Miami Hurricanes are gaining strength with a great recruiting class and their NCAA issues finally having resolution. I think UM will dominate that division for years to come and would not be surprised if the ACC Championship became a 3-horse race between Clemson, FlaSt and UM. The tarholes will be lucky to finish 2nd in that division.

unc football thought they were going to be better by admitting academically unqualified personnel (there's further discussion yet about exactly how those players got the SAT/ACT scores to minimally qualify) and even that didn't help---except to bring NCAA investigators to Orange County. Their academic reputation is in shards....and the football program has not noticeably improved...IMO

Larry fedora just got there last year. How can he be blamed for the previous mess?

And nc state. And south Carolina which both played.

I don't think Pitt miami va tech east Carolina were weaker than wake forest Syracuse etc. And both played Boston college and ga tech. Florida state obviously better than everyone in acc.

And SEC

And every other team in the nation. Hence the national championship.

They didn't play us or Florida State, the two best teams in the conference. That gave them a huge advantage and they still squandered it on a 4-4 record. Ga Tech and Virginia got stuck with losses to us. Pitt and Miami got stuck with playing FSU. Rotate any of these and things look even worse for UNC last year. Only Va Tech and Duke got similarly easy draws and it is no coincidence that the division came down to their head to head game.

I just hope we pound them. I always disliked them but never more than after their academic scandal. They need and deserve abject humiliation.

e better hope they don't get good. It's very hard for us to get players out of NC when UNC is good. Fortunately, they haven't been for a while. Mack Brown pretty much locked down the borders when he was there.

I just looked up Marquise Williams' profile and he was a higher ranked dual threat qb out of HS than Marcus Mariotta and Johnny Football by Rivals.

Teddy Bridgewater was actually ranked as a dual threat qb and he was only #6.

Looks like Rivals had some serious misses in that group.

They have very good young skill talent. OL will be a question mark on offense. Defense should be about the same or slightly better next year.
