Best team yes, but without having many crossover games and no way to gage the strength of each team's conference or common opponents I submit wins are an ultimate gage of the 4 best teams. Go Tigers!!!

Losses are important too. If a theoretical team had played and lost closely to bama, Clemson, and ND but blown out the competition in every other game, there’s still no way they’d be playing in the CFP.
Think about 2006 Michigan. The undefeated wolverines lost closely to the undefeated buckeyes and a lot of people figured a rematch in the title game was justified. But, even as a wolverine fan, that didn’t make sense to me. Michigan essentially had a playoff game and they LOST. It doesn’t matter what the other teams in the country are doing - they clearly weren’t the best team at that point. If anyone thinks a rematch is necessary then close championship football games should be played for a best 2 out of 3.
Likewise, Georgia had a “playoff” game - and they LOST. It doesn’t matter that the game was close and it doesn’t matter that Vegas thinks they’re better than Oklahoma. Georgia had their chance and didn’t win. If losing doesn’t matter then we really need to scrap the whole playoff AND the championship game the. just go back to the way it was 20-30 years ago

Basketball has about 32 regular season games and a 68 team playoff.
That means that teams are able to play more OOC games and almost 20% of teams make the playoff.
So of course you will have rematches of the regular season.
Football has 12 regular season games and 3% of teams make the playoff. This makes the idea of including teams who had an opportunity and failed because they looked decent doing it, ridiculous.

My question is when did ESecPN start focusing on close losses. Last time I checked the criteria was based on wins, not moral wins or close losses. The only time a loss should be considered, in a good way, is if the losing team had several key players out for the game, thus the team was not close to being 100%. If Fromm and/or Swift had gone out with an injury in the 2nd quarter, and Alabama came back late to win, I can sort of see an argument for letting UGA in. But, if Mr. Herbstreit thinks that close losses to Alabama should be treated as a win, then I would like to make a claim on the 2015 NC for Clemson since they lost a close game to Bama. I doubt the ESPN talking heads are interested in discussing that.

How on earth should a 2 loss SEC team, without a conference championship, be ranked ahead of a 1 loss Big 10 team, with a conference championship? Just because one of Georgia's losses was to the almighty Alabama, who is the best team ever in the history of sports, shouldn't offset the fact that Georgia lost twice as many games as Ohio State (one by 20 points).
Are we really to the point where teams from non-SEC power five conferences have to go undefeated and win their conference championship, just to feel good about getting into the playoffs over SEC teams without a conference championship? If so, that's scary.

Last year when Wisconsin was undefeated and everyone knew how much of a joke their schedule was. There has to be a balance between the importance in wins and in who those wins are against.

The committee got it right last year on selection Sunday. If the Big 10 champ (Ohio State) or Pac 12 champ (USC) last year had one loss, instead of 2 or 3 losses, respectively, then they would've gotten in over Alabama.
