Expanded playoff and the bowl games.

Jun 10, 2021, 3:36 PM

I don't mean to steal the topic from the expanded bowl game link, but I figured starting another thread would be better than posting this in that thread and possibly hijacking it. I think there are two related but separate questions:
1. Should the playoffs be expanded? (how many teams?)
2. Assume the playoffs will be expanded. How will it work?

I'm gonna offer a wild and radical plan (so that means the NCAA would never go for it) to answer the second question.

Premises:
1. Money drives the train.
2. The easiest way to generate a ton of money is to expand the playoffs.
3. Then NCAA will figure out someway to "preserve the bowl games."

Plan:

1. "Regular" season will be 11 games. It will start on the Thursday before Labor Day. (Games Thursday through Monday, Labor Day, will be Week 1 games.)

2. Bowl games will be played over 15 days, ending on the Thursday before the Week 1 games begin. (More on this in a minute.)

3. Conference championship games will be played and not count as one of the 11 games.

4. Playoffs will expand (I don't care how many - 8, 11, 12, 16, 24, whatever) with all games being played on the home field of the higher ranked school until the semifinals. Semifinals and finals will be sold to the highest bidder, just like the Super Bowl is now. (I'll mention how an 11 team playoff would work in a minute.)

Bowl games:

Yep, the Rose Bowl would be played in August. It would have the PAC 12 and Big Ten champs from the previous year playing in it. Other Bowls would make agreements with conferences just like they do now. We would still have the minor bowls with Air Force vs. Coastal Carolina or Wake Forest vs. Colorado State or whatever.

Will the bowls scream about it? Yep. Will the purists talk about destroying tradition? Yep. So what? They screamed about the BCS. They screamed about the playoffs. They screamed about moving games away from January 1. Money screams louder.

11 team playoff:

This is the easy solution, assuming we still have the Power Five. (I'm not sure we will, but if we do, here is how to expand the playoff.)
Power 5 champs get an automatic bid. 6 at large teams are chosen. Those 6 teams play in a "play in round" at the home of the better seeded team. 8 teams are now left. First round games are played at the four highest ranked conference champs.

You put a lot of thought into that.
I am not opposed to any of it.

Personally, I prefer the present system as I believe it has produced the National Champion each year.
Like you said, greed $$ drives the train.

I a fan of Bowl games, have attended many that my Tigers were not even at. On TV every December are some good games with teams I may have missed out on during the year.

I am not a fan of expansion. When it does expand, would go with some system where those who did not play as well during the season play each other before getting a shot at teams that "earned" their way in over an entire season.

Sometimes the road to the truth is so elusive it's confusing and reality becomes illusion.

So, I has the confuse...

1. Is it just a consideration of "too many games in December/January" to have the Rose Bowl in August? Or trying to get it back to tradition of B1G versus PAC12 champs?

2. They should have screamed about the BCS, right? It was a sham system that resulted in sham national champions.

I like the 11 team playoff concept. Definitely the home team part.
