So how does everyone see the QB

Mar 6, 2022, 10:09 AM

situation playing out?

DJU has two years left to play, Cade ain’t sitting around backing him up for two years. The full court DJU hype machine is coming full swing out out spring camp and Dabo like you knew it would. I just hope sticking with him, because we all know that’s going to happen for the first few games, doesn’t cost us another Natty!

DJU dropped some weight, is heathly and from reports, seems to be moving much better. I am praying he has the year we all know he can, Cade adds weight and learns the offense with a lot of 4th quarter PT in mop up situations.

DJU being our starter the whole year is what I want. I hope he is a Heisman finalist and his draft stock shoots through the roof so he can not pass up the opportunity to go pro. Cade comes in for 2023 and continues our excellence in the CFP.

Thats a win win for everyone.

If DJU doesn’t play well enough to get drafted after next season, I doubt he finishes the year as the starter. I think DJU bounces back and meets expectations and that last year’s frustrations are only a distant memory.

I hope that DJ has an awesome season.

Unless DJU’s progress…

Mar 7, 2022, 6:23 PM [ in reply to Re: So how does everyone see the QB ]

is nothing short of miraculous, he’s a rerun of Kelly B in 2018.

DJ was terrible last season. He was TERRIBLE, LONG before he could use injury as an excuse. I’d love to see the miracle happen, but based on what I saw from the git-go with him last season, I’m expecting Kelly B 2.0. 2-3 games and he’s on the bench behind CK for good.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I hope by the 4th game that......

Mar 6, 2022, 10:27 AM

CK outplays DJ and puts him on the bench. Our hope lies with CK just like it did with TL in 2018.

Hoping DJ shows out and has a great year, but at the end of the day I hope whichever is playing better gets the nod to lead the team. CK sitting a year would be great for him physically and mentally imo.

I hope Cade is the next coming of Christ and leads us to 3 straight NC’s before leaving to be the #1 overall pick. DJ is so grateful for the opportunity to learn he sticks around for 2 years of mop up and also gets drafted (aka Matt Cassel).

I think DJ holds onto the job all season. In looking at the schedule, unless DJ is injured or completely goes off the rails, there’s not really a good spot for Cade to take over. Maybe the Syracuse game at home then a bye week before ND, but that’s a tough spot for a freshman and DJ did deliver there before. We’d have to have dropped 2 before Dabo makes that call.

Ultimately the OL worries me more than QB.

While dropping weight might make him more mobile, his indecisiveness, poor decision making, and inaccuracy are bigger issues.

If Cade has those as strengths (a la TL as a freshman), he will be starting by the 4th game.

Hopefully DJ does great. If he starts like he played last year he should be yanked. Going through the “growing pains” of a run only attack will result in early loses. As we learned last year, it only takes a couple to be on the outside looking in to everything.

All the DJU hype in the world won't fix slow. Cade takes over.

I think the FAA will probably have to get involved,

Mar 6, 2022, 6:19 PM

primarily to put some minimum altitude restrictions over Death Valley during game time just to keep aircraft from coming into contact with DJ's passes.

1 of 3 ways ...

Mar 6, 2022, 9:08 PM

1. (Best case scenario) DJU balls out -- plays well enough to become a 1st round draft grade and gets us back to the playoffs/natty game.

CK gets a year to learn the system, put on weight, and see plenty of 2nd half action to get valuable reps and toward the end of the season we get to feel really good if he has to play more than mop up duty.

2. DJU vs CK = DW vs CS / TL vs KB PT. 2

Competition goes deep into the season. Unlike KBs situation, DJU has 2 years of eligibility left after this year (COVID year) -- if it's too close to call, DJU likely gets the nod early and we watch it play out.

If we lose 1-2 games, and CK looks like he's ready to take the reigns, Dabo likely gives him the keys later in the year (again, if he looks and plays well in action.

3. Cade is that good and DJU transfers.

If Cade starts lighting it up during the spring, clearly out plays DJU in the spring game, and makes straight A's through every trial Dabo throws at him....then maybe DJU transfers.

As Hood put it in one of the early Spring Football articles, bearing some kind of crazy things happening, DJU is probably going to get the benefit of the doubt until live rounds start flying in the season.

I imagine we'll all have a better idea once we see the spring game. Definitely looking forward to the buzz building once the spring practices get into full swing.

DJ is the QB today and will be when the season opens. The 1st games should not be close so DJ will have 3 games under his belt and will be ready for Wake. I am more concerned about the offensive line than QB. DJ will go pro after this year and if Cade matures, he will be ready in 23.

Re: So how does everyone see the QB

Mar 6, 2022, 9:25 PM

I feel DJ will have a strong year, if he doesn’t then Cade ends up starting and DJ transfers for a new start. DJ has invested in outside training like going pro is this year’s goal. If he doesn’t go pro and needs another year to improve his draft stock I think he does that at another school. Maybe a chance to play with his brother?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If we don't have a solid OK, it won't matter much.

Mar 6, 2022, 9:31 PM

Ditto for healthy Ship and Kind, and strong replacements for the defensive losses, especially Skalski.

Hopefully we win blowouts early to get depth established and be ready for the meat of the schedule.

I could see us getting a couple of decent offensive lineman from the portal to help.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’m not buy the DJ kool aid

Mar 6, 2022, 9:36 PM

We’re hearing right now. I hope I’m wrong but every year it never fails. It’s always sunshine and rainbows in the spring and fall camps.

You’ll see a article here soon about how the offensive line is pissed off how they played last year and this year they’ll be nasty.

I don’t really blame the writers. You should write about hope and positivity. So again I hope I’m wrong but for now I’ll take it as a grain of salt.

Re: So how does everyone see the QB

Pretty simple...if DJ returns to freshman season form then he starts and we win a lot of games...Cade sticks around for another year and starts after...if DJ plays like last year for whatever reason (weight, personal, injuries or all the above) then Cade will get the chance (hopefully he lives up to his recruitment and if so he will get the chance) and the DJ will end up somewhere else!!!

The QB position like OG is open for competition. DJU was ranked 107 out of 110 QB's in Passing Efficiency in 2021. After 1-1/2 years of learning the playbook and preparation, DJU came in against a very stout UGA Defense in Game 1 not knowing the playbook and 20-30 pounds overweight.

https://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/individual/8/p3

There are those who believe DJU can improve from 107 ranking to top 10 in 2022. I am skeptical that much growth can occur in less than one year despite DJU's weight loss.

Cade Klubnik has already shown more leadership working with receivers in 6 weeks than DJU did over the entire 2021 season. It does not mean Cade is ready to start, but it means he could be on the path to take over the QB job by mid-season.

Speed, mobility, accuracy, leadership, and ability to successfully audible & hit secondary receivers all matter at QB. Let the competition takes it course.

DJ starts the first 4 games even though everyone knows CK is better

Mar 7, 2022, 6:16 PM

CK takes over, DJ transfers.... thankfully we have Johnson as a viable backup.
