Memorial Stadium "dedication" and paw at 1 o'clock

Aug 17, 2022, 12:30 PM

I am waiting for the scrimmage to end, so I thought I would pass along a few things. On my scoreboard pics this morning, someone posted that Memorial Stadium was not dedicated in 1942 as signage has indicated for years. An article from The Tiger in 1944 stated that the stadium would be dedicated after the war. That is 100 percent correct. AD Graham Neff knows about it, and put Tim Bourret to work on making sure that is not only correct but if it was ever dedicated.

I spent about 20 minutes on the phone with Tim this morning, and he's been researching this along with Sam Blackman. They've searched every archive they have, and it appears that Memorial Stadium was never dedicated. The war ended and everyone just moved on. So, I guess technically, the opening in 1942 kinda counts as the dedication? Heck, maybe we need to have a ceremony. I've been told the administration is aware of it and is looking into it, and is talking about officially dedicating it (how about on Military Appreciation Day!!!).

Now, I've always heard that the paw turned to 1 o'clock was meant to pay homage to the 1 pm kickoff. Someone told me that even though that seems to be tradition, as everyone has heard for years, that is not the case, even though there have been countless articles saying that. Bourret told me that when they were making the cast of the paw, they noticed the Tiger walked with his foot out, pointed at 1 (and 11), so in order to make it as realistic as possible. I also enlisted George Bennett, a Clemson legend, to ask him about the paw because he was involved in it back in the day. He confirmed that it doesn't acknowledge the 1 pm but is just a nod to the way a tiger walks.

How do they look in the scrimmage?

Defense is better today. DJ just threw a beautiful 40-yard TD to Antonio Williams. Cade and Hunter Johnson have been picked. Nate Wiggins has had a great day at corner

badge-seniorwriter.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Uh oh!

Aug 17, 2022, 12:46 PM

Can't have DJ outshine the other QB's. That's a sin in some quarters.

So is it fair to say that DJ has been accurate?

Question about Tim Bourret. I know he retired a few years ago but is he still working for the AD or is he simply a volunteer or some sort? Not asking this in a negative way as i have always enjoyed his work and obscure facts but am curious.

Tim will probably be doing Clemson stuff a couple hours after he is removed from his deathbed.

Tim's full time gig is for NBC Golf... He sits at the 18th green with the announcers and makes sure they have all the notes and stats. He travels all over the world and has a blast. But still lives here and is always around letting me pester him

I would love to attend the dedication ceremony

Aug 17, 2022, 12:43 PM

because I knew some of the Vietnam vets that didn't make it back. However, on July 2nd I had an armoire fall on me as I was loading it on an Uhaul resulting in me getting Rhabdomyolysis. The best I can do is tell you to Google it. In any case I will be in rehab at least until the end of September. I hope there is some way they will video it some all of us that can't make it will be able to see it.

I don't have a lot of hope for that as I have also made that request for a video of halftime at Militay Appreciation Day to the Athletic Department for a number of years. Maybe Tigernet could do it.

A nit pic but nothing is as meaningful as a single bugle/trumpet playing Taps. If you have ever been to a military funeral and have a dry eye at the end of that, something is wrong.

Thanks for sharing that. Military Appreciation Day always stirs an emotional response from me. So many sacrificed so much for us to live in this great country. Even though there are bad thinks that happen in the country, this still is the very best country in the world. God bless the USA!

Aug 17, 2022, 12:46 PM

But it makes people feel good, so whatever.

AS for dedications and true "memorials" I bet there are far more memorial stadia that were never officially dedicated than were.

Regardless, that would be a nice touch on Military Appreciation Day.

This is a side point to another great/informative post by @davidhood...

Wasn't Sam Blackman arrested a few years ago for stealing from Clemson? Was that situation resolved so Sam could be involved with Clemson again?

Aug 17, 2022, 3:44 PM

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. You cannot imagine how much it means to me for you to get involved in the stadium dedication. As further info I have an original program from the 1942 PC game and a short article in the program states that the stadium would be dedicated after the war. If you send me your email address I'll send you a copy of the program cover and the article.

Additionally I contacted Dan Radakovich in 2014 making him aware that the stadium had not been dedicated and asked if he would get the dedication done. After several communications he finally agreed to dedicated the stadium in 2017, the 75th anniversary of the stadium completion. Well after the season I asked Dan why the dedication was not held and he stated it was. When I asked him for a date and time he told me he had a paper published to dedicate the stadium. I asked for a copy of the paper and he kept stalling. I then suggested that the paper was to commemorate the completion. He then tried to convince me that dedication and commemoration were one and the same. At that point I gave up as I had no desire to continue to trade wits with an unarmed person.

Not sure but it may have been Sam who did the article for Dan. Finally I suggested to Graham that it should not be difficult to remove the word dedicate and add completed.

Thanks again for your help and let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

GO TIGERS!!

Of course, the Paw wasn't around in my time at CU,

Aug 18, 2022, 4:41 AM

but I always heard the cant was a nod to a tiger's walk.

As for early afternoon kickoffs, we always had big dances, sponsored by the CDA, in the cafeteria on Saturday nights during home games, so night games would have been a huge downer. The early games left plenty of time for us and our dates to get "dressed," which meant coats and ties for the guys and dresses and heels for the Ladies. The best part was we got to see closehand some top groups in those days like the Four Tops, Drifters, Temptations, etc. And, believe it or not, most people in those days actually danced! lol

Re: Memorial Stadium "dedication" and paw at 1 o'clock

Aug 18, 2022, 6:19 AM

Thanks for the info David.

If there is a ceremony, it absolutely needs to be held on Military Appreciation Day. On the scoreboard writing, 1942 needs to remain. The intent was there and has been Memorial stadium ever since. If the wording needs to be modified from dedicated to honoring fine. Don’t take 1942 down.

We need to dedicate Memorial Stadium.

If the Tiger Paw was not rotated to 1 O'clock The Tiger would be walking in circles. We did that several times in the past. Like the Children of Israel after the Exodus, we walked in circles between Danny and Dabo.

That is really interesting information. As for the 1 o'clock angle of the paw, I seem to remember that it was straight up and down originally. Even as late as the Steve Fuller years. A quick look back at game pictures from the early 70's would confirm or not. At a minimum it is substantially different in size now than the 70's.

David, I heard both stories a out the orientation of the Paw to one o'clock, but I've read several times about a different origin of the paw itself. What I've read is that the ad agency in charge with developing the "official" Tiger Paw used an imprint of a Tiger Paw kept by the Smithsonian.
