canceling Verizon cable?

About the only real tv anyone in this house watches anymore is me and sports. I'll save $50 alone in box rentals.

All the streaming services are the same price as cable/satellite now, if not more expensive because you have to subscribe to 9 different things.

I just have a couple Google TV's up at the lake so I can use the YoutubeTV in multiple places. It's still a bargain compared to what it would be to have dedicated cable in two locations, and it's pretty sweet having my cloud DVR available anywhere.

HBO, Disney+, and Netflix. I much prefer that to spending $40 a month on cable boxes and DVR and poundmeintheass fees. And if you already pay for Prime, you get their streaming stuff for free.

Apr 27, 2022, 9:42 AM [ in reply to We spend about $40 a month on streaming. Not bad. ]

we have Prime anyway, so that's free, and we add YouTubeTV in fall for football, so for half the year we pay nothing. Searching around on Prime and the various free apps like PBS, we can find enough to stay entertained during the summer. And we rent the occasional movie from Prime. That won't fit everyone, but does us.

so I'll definitely save. Plus I already have streaming so I'm paying that in addition to cable. youtube is like 70. cable is around 130. I'll save about 50.

You can switch to unlimited devices for $10 a month extra the first year and $20 the following years, if that matters. Otherwise, just three.

thinking about getting some synology somethingerother NAS but no idea where to start really...prob don't need much more than a TB to start, but would prob ultimately use it for other stuffs too

got any wreck-or-mendations?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah just use my server, duh.

Apr 27, 2022, 2:38 PM

For your use and needs, I'd recommend a Synology DS220+, get two harddrives and put them in a RAID 1 (mirror). Your usable space is the size of the harddrive, so I'd probably go buy two 4TB drives.

If you wanted a little more space and expandability, you could do a DS420+ and have up to four harddrives - but if you want a simple backup, then you're good with the DS220+.

I'm now rocking a DS1621xs+ filled with 16TB drives.

Re: so finally cutting the cord. Anyone have experience with

Apr 27, 2022, 11:00 AM

Depends on what you're looking for. I usually switch it up and keep about 3 or 4 services at a time. I pay $50 - $60 per month. It's tough if you are into sports, because you have to purchase a "cable" like provider for ESPN. The only sport I really watch is Rugby, and Peacock has a great lineup for that.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I also like my YouTube TV

Apr 27, 2022, 2:28 PM

Cheaper (although not by a lot) and no box to mess with. I like that the whole package works seamlessly on TV, computer, phone, tablet, etc.
