Let's quit kidding ourselves and just make it fair

Dec 6, 2021, 2:42 PM

with the NIL and transfer portal, college football is no longer even close to amateur.

Lets just have 4 conferences of 16 teams each, and each team gets an NIL cap, staff salary cap and operating cost cap and have at it.

What we have now and what we are becoming is a joke. The largest schools (TAMU, UT, OSU, etc) have the largest fan bases so will have the most money for coaches and players and if they don't succeed they're royally messing up (here's looking at you Jimbo). Alabama will survive for now (and us too) because we have a brand. But in the long run with this current model only the large, well heeled schools will do well.

Sorry to be so negative but while we had people committed to our program because they loved Clemson I could be positive.

blame the xfer portal all you want.. but.. when your coach

is getting paid TWICE as much as a professional coach doing the same job.... it is pretty hard to argue the "student athlete amateur" model.

the NCAA tried.. and lost. you could argue all those millions were going into scholarships, facilities, clothes, stipends. that the money was going right back to the student athlete.

BUt it is hard to argue these kids are benefiting from these 9-10 mil salaries. It was a losing battle with or without the portal.

Geville Tiger on Clemson football , "Dabo's only problem is he has to deal with turd fans questioning every move he makes.”

I agree with you. I don't begrudge the kids. Thats why I said a salary cap. I'd also like to see a per team NIL cap.

have to give back that new truck he received as part of an NIL sponsorship deal with an Ohio car dealership or does he get to take that with him when he transfers to Texas or Texas A&M?

Came to Ohio State with all kinds of hype, the No. 1-ranked player in the 2021 class, signed NIL deals for all kinds of money, and then hit the transfer portal after only taking a total of two snaps all season (both handoffs in a blowout win against Michigan State).

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Ok, lets make it fair!
For starters which conference do you eliminate? And how do you handle playoff's?
Secondly there are 130 D-1 schools .Which 66 teams do you eliminate? And how do you realign those 4 conferences so one of them doesn't have more than their shares of the Alabama's of the world? And where does Notre Dame go?
And how do you tell a 5 star recruit he can't have any more NIL money than a 3 star?
And if you have a staff salary cap, which staff members do you need to eliminate to reach that cap? And is your Head Coach considered part of that staff?
And lets talk operating cost. Lets say your team doesn't make the CFP's but has a good enough record for a New Years Day bowl game but operating cost would prevent Clemson from traveling to play the real USC in The Rose Bowl. But Georgia would be ok because of proximity to New Orleans but the Sugar has SEC tie -in's and you played the Dawgs to open the season.
Have I missed anything .How about student enrollment? Housing cost? Are those part of the operating cost? If so how do you account for the construction cost different companies charge ?Does it go to the lowest bidder?
And why should one conference have a bigger television contract if all the conferences have the same number of teams?
Waiting to hear both your negative and positive feedback.
