Maybe this explains his lack of minutes. That's a crucial loss.

High shot percentage. The kid is good, and is worthy of more minutes. Clemson just isn't the place for him to achieve that with Grantham coming in and Harrison/Roper currently on the roster

I trust Brownell, but I don't understand it.

Obviously Brownell's judgement on basketball matters is far superior to mine or anybody else's on T-net, but it is puzzling as to why a guy who is an offensive machine can't get a pile of minutes on a team that really needs an offensive machine.
I don't buy the notion that it's because he's not good defensively. He's not that bad, and when our biggest, most overwhelming need is guys that can shoot and score, then you find a way to compensate for a guy like Coleman if that is the case. I figure it's one of the following: Personality clash with Brownell; Academics; or personal/family issues.

I hope not because he's one of my favorite players. It's a shame that in basketball kids will transfer cause they're not clocking in 35 minutes a game. Nobody embraces being a role player anymore

BB's transfer % is not high

pardon me, but you're misinformed. check the ncaa stats... approximately 40% of D1 basketball players transfer at least once in their career. Bb's transfer figures are not out of line. in fact, they are probably below average.

here's a little factoid for you...
NCAA president Mark Emmert made them a frontburner issue in May when he expressed concern over the fact that 40 percent of men's basketball players are not at their original school by the end of their sophomore year.

levels of NCAA play...I seriously doubt your 40% number applies to teams in the Div. 1 power conferences like the ACC.
A little factoid for you, see the list of '13 transfers in the link below...a lot of transfers are at schools I've never heard of before.
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/9415252/tracking-every-transfer-2013-offseason-college-basketball
I think if you compare BB's transfers (vs. incoming recruits) to schools in the other major Div. 1 conferences...you would find our transfer rate to be above average.

A quick look at your link shows that DePaul,West Virginia, Illinois, Alabama, South Carolina, Pittsburgh, Rutgers all had 4 or more transfers last year. Clemson of course had 2 guys transfer the same as 22 other teams in power conferences.
Brownell has lost 6 players his whole time here (Stanton, Sapp, Sullivan, Hill, Johnson, Coleman). Stanton never should have been here and Hill/Johnson were coach change casualties.

That a way to waste a year (and career)
Dec 28, 2013, 1:03 PM

Coleman is a talented player who unfortunately had a very bad injury in tearing his Achilles. However, after sitting out last year, he should have been physically ready for this season. To not be, MIGHT have been a weak effort on his part to re-hab it. Coach Brownell has all the facts & made the decision to play Coleman with the confidence he was ready mentally & physically---evidently they didn't agree on something. Now Coleman will have to sit out another year's worth of BB. I think BB is like FB in that he gets 5 years to play 4, so he just wasted a year of eligibility...not too smart.

seems to be a fairly recent trend to give football guys a 6th year if a medical situation was involved. not sure if they would do that with hoops or not

yep there is definitely has a plan for those two spots that needed to be available for the early period signees. Not sure what the one for the second scholarship is but I'm sure he didnt just go sign two hoping numbers would work out. The man knows what he wants to do

Coach Brownell and the players probably wanted to play

this winter and see how things worked out. The players wanted to prove they were worthy of a spot and the coach wanted to be sure who his best players were. After playing the first semester, both have a better idea of where everyone stands and can make more informed decisions. Players can still transfer and play next season for their new team. While they can still transfer after the season, they won't play for their new team next season so we'll probably hear one more soon.
I'm sure he and the players had an idea of the players who were on the bubble of leaving. I don't think everyone knew, prior to the season start, exactly who the two players would be.
Coach Brownell knows next year is his year to prove how good he is or if he'll be moving on. I don't think he's going to encourage the transfer of a player that he truly thinks can help him keep his high paying job in the most important year of his tenure.

Wrong ... Devin will still have two and a half years
Dec 28, 2013, 2:10 PM
[ in reply to That a way to waste a year (and career) ] |

He will be eligible at his new school January 1, 2015, and will still be a sophomore. The year missed due to the ruptured Achilles will not count in the 5 to play 4.
Folks, this is potentially a huge loss to our program. Coleman was one of Brownell's bigger recruiting coups. But, it was clear to me that he and Brownell did not get along well and that Brownell simply didn't trust him enough to play him the minutes that his skills should have demanded. If we are going to compete in the New ACC, our coaches are going to have to be able to go into places like Philly, NYC, DC and Baltimore and recruit kids like Devin Coleman. Two-star kids from the southeast are going to mean we will be gritty, tough, good on defense, but ultimately a team that loses over and over and over again to Syracuse, Pitt, Louisville, etc., etc.
FWIW, I think Filer is next. If we needed to create space for next year, Josh Smith would've been the obvious transfer out. But he is a hard worker and an overachiever and those are the players Brownell feels comfortable being around...

How are you getting 2.5 years left?
Dec 28, 2013, 11:19 PM
|
|
Year 1: Freshman played whole season (1 yr.) Year 2: Redshirt injured Year 3: Played 1st half & sits out 2nd half (1.5 yrs total) Year 4: Transfers-sits out 1st half & plays 2nd half (2 yrs. total) Year 5: Plays whole season (3 years total) Year 6: Out of time with 1 season left unused.
You are inferring a medical redshirt is different than a "coaches decision" redshirt and I do not believe this is true.
I do agree that this is a huge loss & we do need more of the guys with 'street cred' instead of 'church league cred'. Competition in SC is terrible and we've got to go out and convince players in Metro areas that Clemson is a great place to go to school & play in the ACC immediately.
