So, are WE pleased overall with FB hires, play in Bowl, outlook

Jan 13, 2022, 5:07 PM

for 2022 with new invites out to some big time high school talent as well as several needed players announcing they’re returning..AND it’s looking like the portal inward wall will be cracked open a little to help some quick needs.

I’m feeling better and without needing an aspirin or Rum drink.

What says youse?

Go Tigers!

Agreed. Bresee, Potter, Zanders, Taylor, even Ngata (missed some games this year), all returning. There must be a few others. And the maturation of our running backs will be great to see. We should be fine this coming year.

Obviously, offense needs to step it up, but I think they will be better. Overall, I'm pleased with the football program. 2021 down a bit, but 10-3 and 14 AP ranking not bad.

I feel like the bleeding has stopped in players leaving for the portal, de-commitments, etc. for now and the program has stabilized. It's going to take some time for recruits to get familiar with the new coaches but what I am hearing is inspiring.

I think the results of the bowl game, especially on the defensive side relieved some uneasiness for many. The offense showed signs of a HU in the HUNH offense again - that was inspiring. I did like the run-focused offense to set up the play action passing but I am still missing the deep ball threat and passing game between the hash marks. The later is crucial to exceed and return to the next level.

I am optimistic about NSD#2 and that the coaches are focused on bridging the gap in open scholarships. I was pleasantly surprised to see about ten new offers and candidates that they are actively pursuing and some are diamonds in the rough. I am still cautiously optimistic about the portal until we actually receive and accept a transfer.

Can't tell anything from 1 game but in 3 weeks on Signing Day, we will know more.

Personally I disagree with the promotions and hires

Jan 13, 2022, 6:05 PM

But what I (or anyone on this board) thinks doesn’t really matter. Everyone, from you and me to Dabo, will have to wait and see if these moves pan out. We all hope they do, but I just don’t believe in nepotism or anything that resembles it. History says it doesn’t work. Hopefully we defy history.

I feel pretty good. Ill not stop missing BV til I see he isn't needed, but I had the idea Streeter was trying to do more with what we had and this was welcomed.

The NIK and portal, coupled w new coaches sees us with our hands full but I'm expecting things to work out pretty well

Very pleased overall. I would say I couldn't be happier, but I have most certainly forgotten something I am upset about. Dabo knows best so let us continue with the rum.

Want a real answer?

Jan 13, 2022, 7:21 PM

1. Overall football hires: Not really. I think we could have gotten a more proven OL coach from outside the program. I like Branden Streeter, but I've never known him to be a great offensive mind. He hasn't done much with the Quarterbacks. Deshaun and Trevor were as good the day they arrived as the day they left. Any qb not named Deshaun or Trevor never progressed at all. I felt we should have gone outside for this hire also. I think Grisham, though a former tiger, should be replaced at wr coach. The receivers were awful, dropped balls, not getting separation, not even in the right spot on the field at times. Our offense needs some real outside blood that knows what they're doing. Our offense cost us a national championhip this year. We had an elite championship caliber defense that held Georgia to three points. With just a below average offense, we could have been in the title game. But we didn't have a below average offense, we had a historically bad offense ranked lower than 110 out of 130 teams.

2. The play in the bowl: I was happy with the bowl win over a tough Iowa State team. I will never complain about a win. The overall play, however, was the same as throughout the season. Our defense once again bailed out our horrible offense. In fact, it shined a light on the fact that the offense truly had not improved from September to late December. We scored on a terrible Wake defense and a hapless South Carolina defense. Other than those two games, the offense displayed the same incompetence it had displayed all season.

3. The outlook: The outlook for next year, if we have the same qb and same offense, will be more of the same with a slightly less effective defense and probably not as many one possession wins with the ball not always bouncing our way in tossup games,as it did this year. So the immediate outlook could be less wins and a lower ranking for 2022. If, however, and its a big if, the new kid from Texas is good enough to beat out DJ, and the coaches will unseat the upper classman for frosh, we could have a very good year, perhaps a playoff year. It is unlikely, however, that we would have another true freshman lead us to a national title, when Lawrence was the first to do so for any school since 1985. The odds of that type of lightning striking twice are not good. I do think that Klubnik will be an excellent qb for us, but a natty as a freshman is a lot to ask. Then again, like last year, if the defense is even close to as good, the kid could get it done. The outlook beyond 2022 is concerning. This past signing class was a disaster. Granted, when Venables left, we lost four top recruits that had committed. But the fact that we only had 12 total recruits prior to that and had nobody of a decent ranking as alternatives is mind boggling. And since then, there has been very little activity on shoring up the 2022 signing class by February, nor have I seen any real inroads regarding getting players from the transfer portal.

Recruiting classes and offenses like our most recent ones will assure a ceiling of middle of the pack ACC and not playoff caliber.

?? Well, Clemson81to85

Jan 13, 2022, 7:48 PM

makes some valid points and i can agree that maybe Street was not The BEST Man for the job..and that WR’ers were crappy & injured too much..and that Bowl win was over a “decent” team without their 1200+ yard runner, and that Freshman QB won’t win a Natty especially without the best Dline ever at Clemson...

well, guess things aren’t so hot after all.

Heading for the Rum bottle. ??

Anyone that left the spring game feeling confident is lying to themselves. We will know more after the spring. The offense with QB1 in the spring game was putrid. The offense for the first half of the year was putrid and not much better as the season went on because the game play was dumbed down for a QB that couldn’t make a three step drop or move the pocket under pressure and couldn’t make progression reads. I think there’s several reasons that affected these inabilities but I’ve yet to see any remedies. I tempered my enthusiasm after the spring game and I hope others will do the same if things remain status quo.

It’s looking up

Jan 13, 2022, 7:42 PM

But I don’t think anyone thinks sticking with the same exact offensive staff minus Tony and Caldwell is a great idea after seeing what we were on offense this year.

Perhaps Streeter knew exactly how to fix our offense and just refused to tell Tony, but I doubt that. Perhaps Cade will put a band aid on it the same way Trevor did, but I doubt it. Perhaps having a healthier receiving group will make all the difference, but I doubt it.

Re: It’s looking up

Jan 13, 2022, 8:54 PM

I'm a tiny bit baffled tbh. Perhaps Street tried and was rejected. Perhaps he gave input and as you said got a cursory thank you. Just some of things Tony said and aluded to throughout the year, perhaps Dabo has a heavier hand in O than any knew.

All said, as for personnel. Linebacker and defense QB like Skalski... Who steps in. Depth. Biggest concern LBB - corners. Especially that shutdown corner. We have youth, the problem is we have youth.

Personally, I'd rather see us use portal and get that CB from portal from Oklahoma that's played and possibly another one along with linebacker and one good interior experience oline instead of recruits.

There sure are some negative people, I for one

Jan 13, 2022, 9:25 PM

am optimistic.

DJ will get surgery (if needed) and heal.
Spring competition will suss out and the cream will rise to the top.
The new talent will learn and will be ready.
The portal might open some surprises.
Nat Signing Day #2 might be exciting.

I'm optimistic. All we need is improved QB and WR and we'll make the playoffs. I think we can get that.

To win in the playoffs, we'll need playmakers to develop. Maybe in 2022. If not, I'll take a playoff bowl game over the Cheez-It Bowl any day.

Best is the standard.
