So, about COVID...

Jul 7, 2020, 12:03 AM

Do you agree with these statements?

1. Masks likely reduce transmission of COVID when considering larger droplets, for example, droplets released through sneezing and coughing, and droplets that may be transmitted while talking.

2. Masks likely do not reduce transmission of COVID via air.

3. Masks may slow the rate of spread of COVID, but masks will not eliminate the spread of COVID.

Question: Does slowing the spread of COVID now make things better in the long run? Will it make it go away?

Wear masks if you fear for yourself or are trying to protect someone you will come in contact with.

A mask may prevent you from receiving and transmitting infected droplets, but keep in mind a mask DOES NOT PREVENT THE TRANSMISSION OF A RESPIRATORY VIRUS.

Relating this to sports, it will not be possible to stop the spread before the start of the MLB and NBA seasons, nor will it be stopped prior to the start of NFL and college football. People will be getting sick up to the start of and during all of these sports, and that includes players. Do we live with it.. or stop everything and wait on a vaccine?

So what are we gonna do? I say go forward.

Believe whatever you want. But err on the side of caution and protect others as much as you can. Wear masks in public, sanitize, wash hands, keep your spacing... generally try to be respectful of the vulnerabilities of some people. Not hard.

I fail to see the difficulty of looking out for others.
I do it, im happy to do it, ill continue to do it no matter how many jerks dont lift a finger to help.

All I'm gonna say is there is a reason surgeons wear surgical masks when doing surgery.

Jul 7, 2020, 7:55 AM [ in reply to Re: So, about COVID... ]

Have you actually researched why? I would say no...

Here are some quoyes from articles published prior to COVID:

"Here, where bacteria were the major concern in wound infection, the enemy targets were larger and might not require the fine filtration necessary to keep a respiratory virus away, researchers theorized.

But the trials "showed absolutely no efficacy" for that original purpose, MacIntyre noted.

"Really, the surgeon might as well wear nothing on their face," she said.

Still, the CDC recommends a mask in the operating room, citing long-standing tradition and the benefits of protecting nose and mouth from splashes of blood and other bodily fluids.

MacIntyre noted that a face shield is a better option against splashes because surgeons have to wear eye protection with a mask anyway.

But mask wearing "is so inculcated into the practice of medicine that it's going to be very hard to change," said John G. Bartlett, MD, former chief of infectious diseases at Johns Hopkins.

Tradition and aesthetics play a role in the issue. Patients would not accept a surgeon who doesn't wear a mask because they are so ingrained as a symbol of a safe surgical environment, Bartlett said."

The main thing I'm afraid of is reinfections. Even with the non-mutated virus, some people were contracting it a second time, so immunity isn't guaranteed. And now that there's a mutation (possibly more than one), a reinfection is even more likely. So even the players that have had it and have antibodies are still at risk.

I'm in the "go forward" crowd, but there WILL be reinfections.

It was always about slowing the spread and not stopping it

Jul 7, 2020, 12:35 AM

with no vaccine, you can't really stop it, but if it can be slowed down enough until the hospitals are more able to handle it, that's a good thing. My cousin was just diagnosed with it and went to the er with chest pains. 2 days there with the antibiotics and steroids that they're giving now, he no longer has symptoms even though he's still positive.

If he had caught this at the beginning, the end result could've been worse since they didn't know about the effect of dexamethasone back then. So, slowing the spread is key. I wear a mask, but don't look down at those that really feel their rights are violated by putting one on. But I also don't get the people that seem to be irked at me wearing one. I'm not doing it to make a political stand, but I've come across those that want to make it that way and it's making me question what humanity in this country is really about.

Re: It was always about slowing the spread and not stopping it

Jul 7, 2020, 7:34 AM

I'm intrigued by all the fascination with "a vaccine." We act as though once we have a vaccine, COVID fear will be a thing of the past. Tell that to the families of the 65,000 people who died from Influenza last year. We've had a vaccine for Influenza for 50 years. So why are their still deaths? Because virus mutates. The same is true of COVID. We need to face the reality that, whether naturally occurring or created in a lab, COVID is here to stay. We are going to have to learn to live with it. That means "vulnerable people" are going to, of necessity, be required to be pro-active and avoid contact with other individuals or wear a mask from this point forward. While I'm healthy, I'm in the "vulnerable" category at the age of 67. And I'm fine with those facts. I'm also fine with having college football season. Each of us will have to decide whether we are willing to take the risk of tailgating and attending games. I will but many will not, and that's OK! Each player and his family will have to make that same decision. But that's exactly the way we confront Influenza. Granted, life as we have known it has changed forever. But that is reality. The sooner we come to grips with it, the better off we'll all be. so let's stop this foolish notion that "once we have a vaccine, life will be normal again." This is normal from this point forward. Go Tigers!

I know that viruses mutate, but do they all mutate at the same rate? Have you heard what epidemiologists have said about Covid mutation? I have not (will google). Hopefully it is a slow mutation, or perhaps the mutations are less severe or less virulent, so that we don't notice.

Mask are simply a Linus blanket

Jul 7, 2020, 1:08 AM

Mask are simply a Linus blanket, if they make you feel good wear them. If you’re wearing one and you truly believe they work being around people who aren’t wearing them should not be a concern whatsoever for you.

Mask in the hospital setting are to prevent the spread of bacteria not viruses, viruses are significantly smaller than bacteria and pass-through mask with ease. This entire issue is being driven by emotion and feelings and when we allow our emotions and feelings to control our lives we’re no better than the animals.

with N95 respirator masks, which are available for as little as $2 each. The N95 masks are effective against Covid 19. The cloth masks that people make and those cheap paper surgical masks that a dentist would use are not reliable.

Re: I think a lot of you are confusing surgical masks

Jul 7, 2020, 11:14 AM

N95 masks are effective to take out 95% of
particles larger than 300 microns according
to an interview with a doctor
in California I heard on a Dennis Prager interview.

The Dr. went on to say that the Covid19 virus
was anywhere from 74- 119 microns in size
depending on its outer coating.

That mean that it will pass right through an N95 mask
unless its attached to a droplet larger than 300 microns in size.

Re: I think a lot of you are confusing surgical masks

Jul 7, 2020, 6:47 PM

You are correct with regard to the N95 masks and its ability to prevent transfer of CV-19; however, you totally discount the fact that respiratory spray, the form in which the virus travels, is larger than the virus. Therefore, any virus contained in the droplets will be caught in the mask matrices.

Jul 7, 2020, 1:13 PM

- YOU will either contract Covid or you will not

- if you contract Covid, you will either be sent to hospital or you will not

- if you go to hospital, you will either recover or you will die.

That covers it.

Re: So, about COVID...

Jul 7, 2020, 3:40 PM

1 is correct.
3 is correct.
2... Tge probability of the spread of aerosolized covid may be reduced.

Wear masks and the spread is slowed. If the spread is slowed, hospitals don't get saturated. If hospitals don't get saturated, fewer people die.

Also, didn't the SC governor say that if it isn't under control we won't have college football? Now I don't know what "under control" means, but y'all in SC better get it there. The s*** just got real!

The vast, vast majority of stray virus particles in the air only get there by way of respiratory droplets. The liquid in droplets evaporates in air with a RH below 100%.

Re: So, about COVID...

Jul 7, 2020, 6:59 PM

So why was nobody “lifting a finger” all their life to stop the transmission of flu Strains cold strains and perhaps other thing? What exactly is the threshold of deadliness aka mortality rate that must be reached to where “lifting a finger” is the righteous thing to do vs not required to be righteous? I need data and a threshold, not reaction based on media hype and mob hive behavior.

They wore masks for the 1918 pandemic H1N1

Jul 7, 2020, 7:17 PM

Like this virus, very few people had any existing immunity. If SARS or Ebola had taken hold here, we would have worn masks. The threshold seems to be when everyone is susceptible.
