Small world story. In that late 1980's, I was living near

Fayetteville, NC. There were two D-1 basketball prospects attending small schools in the same conference as the school attended by a high school kid that did some PT work for me. That was very unusual. One was Chris King. He was a center I believe and went on the play for Wake Forest (Hobbton High School). The other was Anthony Oliver. He was a point guard and went on to play at Virginia (North Duplin High School. The kid that worked for me kept talking about a playoff game where these two were meeting. So, we made a one-hour drive and found seats in a packed out high school gymnasium. King and Oliver put on quite a show. I just remember thinking how "smooth" was Anthony Oliver. I was thinking about that game the other day and decided to look up King and Oliver. King played 12 years in the pros and is now a security guard. Lets assume he saved his money and just enjoys meeting people. Oliver had a son that came to CLEMSON (AJ Oliver II) to play for Brownell but transferred out. He is now in his senior year at Old Dominion. His mother, Audra Smith, was the coach for Women's Basketball at CU, but is now at SC State. Who knew?

High School, sitting at the top of a packed gymnasium to see some player everybody raved about play against another player from across town that everybody raved about.
James Worthy got the better of Sleepy Floyd that night, but Floyd's team would later win the State Championship by 1 point over Worthy.
Worthy played for 12 years with the LA Lakers.
Floyd played for 13 years in the NBA for various teams.
James Worthy came over to his uncle's house that year, a house in my neighborhood, and a group of us kids tried to "guard" him while he dribbled and whirled across the driveway.

from Cheraw. Ray Allen came to Cheraw and he was absolutely incredible. I worked in a textile mill and became friends with a guy who played in that game. I remember asking him what he thought of Ray. He just shook his head and said that he still has nightmares trying to guard Ray. He told me he fouled out on purpose so the embarrassment would stop.

Wow … a pro seen early … that’s special.
My best was a state tournament game in Montana about 1984. Livingston had the French brothers and Hardin had Jonathan Takes Enemy. Kral and Shan Ferch were ungodly good players but mostly they could jump. While at Montana State University I never saw Kral Ferch dunk because he delighted the crowd by forcing the ball down off the backboard. Awesome. Shann Ferch was shorter and also a super jumper and he finished his playing at Pepperdine. Takes Enemy was simply the best player I have ever seen in our state. Pete Maravich (who was in Raleigh, not Montana) is the only High School player I have seen who could match Jonathan. He attended Eastern Montana College and was afflicted with the difficulty that many tribal members have when off the reservation … good enough, though, that Sports Illustrated wrote a many page story about him in about 1989.
