Poor play calling leads to 18 sec drive

Oct 3, 2021, 9:08 AM

Man, that chit is frustrating to watch. It's like we love drama.

Are you talking about our last (full) drive?

Oct 3, 2021, 10:06 AM

When we took over with just over 2 minutes?

In that situation 80% of teams and coaches are going to run 3 times to make the other team use TO’s when the other team needs a TD. 1st and 2nd down runs got us to 3rd and 3. The 3rd down play didn’t work, but I didn’t think it was horrible call, you basically tell DJ to roll out and if one of the guys in the flat is WIDE open you try and complete the pass otherwise you try to turn the corner and run for it. A combo of a missed block and a great play by their guy made DJ make absolutely the right play by swallowing the ball and taking the sack.

So yeah, only 26 seconds ran off the clock, but we did make them use all of their TOs in a situation where that is one of the primary goals.

BS most teams will throw to get a first down .
Run the first play if it gets 4 yards run again but if not you have to throw on 2nd. Getting the first down is way more important than leaving them with a TO.
The Coaches just know DJ is bad in passing situations.

Sorry but that is a stupid take. Old adage. It is better to keep your mouth shut and be thought an idiot than open it and prove the point.

This is a ####### take. Their time outs led to the time of the drive. This would only make sense if we called passing plays.

Lack of getting a first down

Leads to 18 sec drive. Get a first down and I guarantee we'd burn through more than 18 secs. Got it?

Situational football

Oct 3, 2021, 10:30 AM

There are 3 goals in that situation:

1) keep the clock running at the end of every play so the other team has to burn TOs
2) try and get a first down (while also meeting the first goal)
3) don’t go backwards so that if it becomes necessary to punt you gain field position on the transfer of the ball.

Do you remember the Clemson/LSU bowl game against Les Miles? In a similar situation he threw 3 times stopping the clock on 2 of them (incompletions). Left us with TO’s that we needed on our final drive. That’s what can happen if you don’t take care of the first goal above.

In our game last night we definitely bent on defense in those last few drives, but give BC a TO or two and they have a much better chance of finishing that drive (especially once they got down to the 11) as it opens up their playbook and makes us consider defending called runs or passes.

So yeah, that drive didn’t run as much clock as we’d all have liked, but it wasn’t a complete failure and it was a pretty standard situationally specific series.

My beotch has everything to do with the type of run call AND the execution. Both bad. I have no problem with DJ on that 3rd down.

Fair enough. It didn’t work, but I didn’t hate the call

Oct 3, 2021, 10:45 AM

It’s not something we’ve show a lot of (as opposed to the line plunge, zone read, and delayed keeper). I can’t argue with it not working, but I actually liked trying something a bit different (but still safe) there as opposed to plays that had had mixed success to that point.

If they save time outs they never fumble...

Oct 3, 2021, 10:49 AM [ in reply to Situational football ]

Their QB wouldn’t have been running out of time and pressing and fumbled that ball. So us making them burn timeouts on our drive won the game. I would love to see us get a first down there and put it away though.

Everything tells me you don't know how to read/comprehend

Oct 3, 2021, 2:34 PM
