A few observations from my Chapel Hole experience
Jan 28, 2014, 9:37 AM
|
|
Made it back safely from Chapel Hole yesterday. Wanted to share a few observations from the town and the game:
-Had great seats right behind the CU bench. Sat two seats across from Dabo, had the chance to meet him and take a picture. He couldn't have been more gracious. After the first picture turned out poorly he said "hey man we gotta get a good one" and found someone to take another one.
-The Dean Dome experience was much better than I anticipated. Yes, there was the wine and cheese factor, but I think with the Heels being a little down this year the "arrogance" I expected from the fans wasn't there.
-I watch most if not all of our games each year, but don't really know much about Brownell other than the clips either here on Tnet or quotes in the paper. IMO and it is JUST my opinion, he's not the most overly positive coach. This is just an observation. I could hear all of his conversations during timeouts and when players would come out and there was not a lot of positive reinforcement going on. Granted, we didn't have a lot to be positive about. But even early in the game when the score was close, he still seemed almost snarky in a way. I was just surprised at the lack of positivity.
-I hate to criticize a player, but Rod Hall is just too short to be effective most of the time. He's a decent ball-handler and can penetrate the lane but once he gets to the basket he's just to short to finish. I've seen this in several games this year and saw it again on Sunday.
-I sincerely hope that KJ doesn't get frustrated at the lack of help he has at times. I've watched a few Miami Heat games this year and they seem to have an offensive play called "give it to LeBron and let him do something." We seem to run this play with KJ a lot....
-The little bit of the campus I got to see was beautiful. Definitely would recommend a visit if you've never been.
-The one thing I will ALWAYS do if I go back is to go to the Carolina Brewery on Franklin Street. They have a bus that shuttles you to and from the game. Free parking, and all you have to do is eat/drink there and you get a shuttle ticket. The wife and I got there around 1 and the shuttle started at 4:30, so we just had to kill a few hours eating and drinking their beers (all of which were awesome, btw), which was not hard for us! Will definitely go this route if I ever go back.
All in all, was actually a surprisingly great experience and I'd love to go back sometime.

in additioa few at the old Charmichael Auditorium, and there is one thing that will always be part of the experience.
UNC fans are so ******* spoiled because of historically corrupt and blatently-biased officials like Lenny Wirtz and Karl Hess, they b!tch, moan, whine, and complain even when obvious fouls are called against them.
UNC fans (like Duke fans) are a bunch of crybabies and deserved to be smacked upside the head.

Love UNC campus & Franklin St since Dad attended..& when CU

wins in FB in that cute pine tree-lined stadium near the famous Bell Tower I feel good since been going there since late 40's. The School is in Orange County and the traffic tickets are placed in a Clemson Orange colored envelope which blows my mind..double-wise!
Campus is filled with great buildings..many the old brick ones from late 1700's..to the more modern ones that outdo our modern ones (which look cheap even though we have an Architecture School).
I take something good from Every college I visit..from UNC to Boston College to Princeton to Harvard to UFL to UTampa to GT to Ole Miss to Purdue to ND to NW to UTenn to UKY to USC to UCLA to Pepperdine to UGa to UVa to OHIO St...and many others.
Clemson does Not have a monopoly on the beauty or facilities or culture or tradition..and as such I like to sample what's out there..and when I come back to Clemson I still feel at HOME!

back then it was on the edge of campus... sometimes seemed like a very long stumble back from Franklin St
was convenient for FB games
now it's more in the middle of things as the campus has grown to the south away from original parts closer to Franklin
but you are spot on, there is nothing remotely attractive about those dorms

I'm betting they are nicer than Johnstone Hall ever was (inside and out) so it ain't like we've got a lot of room to judge.

Morrison was renovated that year and i assume the other examples of that lovely 60's architecture were/have been redone too
no A/C.. cinder block walls...tiny bathrooms for each 4-room suite...glitchy elevators (when they were working)
let's put it this way, it was good prep for some military housing i lived in

TRAVELER ! ! !
Except for all the arrogance and tree hugging - Chapel Hole is a pretty nice place.
And why wouldn't we be warmly greeted during basketball season ?
57 straight times we have been a very humble guest in their preMadonna world.
Welllll - except for that one double overtime thingy where Handsoffmebro and the 3 blind mice single handedly willed the holes to victory.
Not that I remember that or carry a grudge or anything.

The funniest quote of the night came from a fan a few rows back of us, I heard him yell, and I quote:
"You gotta call it both ways, Karl!!!"
Almost spit out my Coke when I heard that.

for a football game / Franklin St. is awesome and the campus is beautiful. My quandry is that my daughter just got accepted to both CU and UNC, among others, with these two being her two front-runners. Living in MD, I like the thought of her being 4.5 hrs. away versus 9, and the Bio-med/pre Pharmacy program at UNC is impressive, but my heart is in Tigertown and she has loved her experiences going down there every 3 or 4 years. We'll see -- may come down to $.

Glad you went to the game to support our team , but disappointed you would publicly critique one our players for his height . You could have kept that thought to yourself , IMO .
