Should you be Happy with an Orange Bowl

Dec 6, 2022, 9:22 PM

appearance instead of the CFP?

I hear and read the 'coach speak' that it's really 'hard' to be in the final four and if people aren't happy with the Orange Bowl bid that CDS doesn't know what to say.

The plain facts are that there are 2M reasons not to settle for an Orange Bowl bid...

I don't have kids yet, but what's your point? With grade inflation, all Bs is pretty mediocre. Clemson's average incoming GPA is a weighted 4.39. So all Bs will land you a fat rejection to Clemson, let alone the super elite schools. Obviously, no parent should punish a kid if they're trying their best and just can't get that A. But if they're not, and you still signal that a B is "good enough," you're a bad parent and harming your kids' career prospects.

Yes!

It means, "you won your conference"!

It also means, "extra playing time for all of your starters on next years team"! IF you don't make a bowl; you are not allowed to practice.
So, more than anything, the time coaches are afforded to prepare their kids for more football is why you should be happy to make a prestigious Bowl like the Orange Bowl!

I think you can both be happy with the orange bowl and be disappointed we were 2 points away from a CFP.
If someone says the Orange Bowl doesnt matter.. that is a ways off. We are a top 7 football team with a chance to finish 12-2 as conference champs.
Nothing wrong with that kind of season.

No, we should all wallow in pity about missing a playoff spot that wasn't guaranteed even with a QB switch. Was it possible? Maybe, but that ship has sailed. Some fans just cannot find a way to get over it. I never knew until recently this team was called the Clemson RickyBobby's.

No, I'm pretty sure I read the post correctly. Its just another way to try to spin the entitlement some fans have since Clemson started competing at a top level. You know how many years some of us would have given almost anything for an Orange Bowl berth? Dabo has brought countless dollars to a program that was decidedly average at best when he took over. Does that factor into your equation? How about the money multiple playoff berths have generated? That raised ticket prices, but it also put Clemson in the elite status in recruiting and facilities. There are 100+ teams that would kill to have a "down" season of 11-2 and an Orange Bowl berth. If 11-2 and a NY6 Bowl berth is too much for you, stop giving them money. No one has a gun to your head.

Amen!

If you were not there during the dark days; you have no idea.

When Dabo and others say, "little old Clemson" it's for good reason. We were not considered a blue-blood. We do not get the benefit of the doubt. Winning double-digit games is a great thing in any season: "if you use to be happy for the Tigers to finish with a winning record"! It use to be: "get to bowl eligibility and maybe 8 wins"! So, when I hear a question about making it to the Orange Bowl "not being enough"! It's strange!
Probably really strange to anyone who is aware of some of our Tommy Bowden and Coach West days!

We need to get back to being that fanbase that appreciates winning! No matter how dominant the win is. No matter what trophy; if any we end up with at the end. The main thing is: being happy to see the Tigers win!
I'm happy TBH to just see the Tigers play! And I hope to see them win. Even if we aren't winning games, i'm there.

I don't feel the Tigers are a top 4 team and I sure didn't want to see another 640 yard blowout like we have experienced in the past two visits. Tennessee is a close to equal team that we have a chance to beat. All good. But no, that bad taste left from the mismanagement of the season finale won't go away in my lifetime. Certain things stick. The 87 whipping the Chickens put on us because we refused to pass in Columbia with the whole stadium chanting Rodney, Rodney, Rodney (we attempted a few 8 yard outs into triple coverage when the game had been decided - far from a Rodney issue). And of course 63-17. That one lasts a lifetime. I'm old school. The in state rivalry takes on a bigger meaning for me than any other game outside of a National Championship Game. I'm in the minority but so be it. I detest losing to the chickens have not forgotten that Steve Spurrier owned Dabo. Facts and data. Glad senility set in and he moved on or he would still be a thorn in our side.

I mean, I'm fine with it. Just happy we get a new opponent in a big time bowl game. Would everyone prefer a CFP or National Championship season? Of course. But this season was a few plays away from being 8-4 or 7-5 but we took over and won those games to become ACC Champions and get a chance to win another Orange Bowl with the new QB almost everybody wanted playing. We'll be CFP hunting again soon.

Bowl payouts are split by the conference. And, as to your example below about paying $25-45 more: $25 more would cover $2M in a single game.

The reality is that we’ve been picked to be in the playoffs each of the past two years in the preseason, and that hasn’t happened. For a program that made a bunch of playoffs in a row prior to that, not making the playoffs is a disappointment. We have the talent and everything else we need for that to happen.

Re: My guess is the OP is not happy about much in life

Dec 7, 2022, 1:40 PM

Lol so you have to make an assessment of my personal life?

You couldn't be more incorrect.

I asked because of the exact nature of all the feedback that is in the string.

Everyone wants to make this into an emotional black or white answer question.

I appreciate Judge Keller's nuanced approach.

I simply wanted to point out the business consequences of the Orange Bowl bid. I assume that everyone can understand that IPTAY will look to mitigate the impact to their revenue stream. That mostly likely starts with ticket sales.

The obvious result based on everyones input is the money doesn't matter.

This honestly surprises me. If it was a restaurant or grocery store that mismanaged its operations and had to increase prices to consumers most people would be upset and some would choose to shop or eat elsewhere.

You love Clemson football so you are willing to turn a blind eye. I have been around the program for over 30 years; however, I am very objective and pragmatic due to my profession. I love Clemson and I love going to games but it wouldn't be truthful for me to say that I can be truly happy to my core with this year. We left meat on the bone.

The Orange Bowl will be great! I loved it when we went in January 2016. Just remember this string when you write your checks for next year.

I think that's a false dichotomy . . .

Dec 7, 2022, 2:26 PM

I've been and remain very critical of how Dabo's handled all this. But I think it's a false dichotomy to suggest we have to be happy w/ the Orange Bowl "instead of" the CFP. I do believe Dabo's choices cost both the SC game and the CFP (the ND game is more complicated and less clear), but I see no reason why I can't still be happy w/ the Orange Bowl even if I believe the W/L results and the bowl could have been better.

Not trying to pick apart your words - I just don't want to throw the baby out w/ the bathwater.

Re: Should you be Happy with an Orange Bowl

Dec 7, 2022, 7:10 PM

Would be easier to accept if this team didn't have the ability to be in the CFP.....but I think we all know that was not the case. Losing to Notre Dame on the road...not great but understandable...they had home field and had a lot of incentive...but loosing to the Coots in Death Valley? No excuse and unacceptable. Especially when looking at the teams in the CFP....with the exception of UGA...I see Clemson beating each of them by 10 points easily....especially with good playing from the QB position.
