Should NIL players get full rides?

Oct 27, 2022, 9:11 PM

Talking about those few who land big deals.
Should they get full athletics rides, too?
The entire premise of NIL is "paying workers a fair market rate" - so if they're getting that, shouldnt they pay for their degree like everyone else?

And if the answer is yes, should there even be an NCAA to regulate the product anymore given the market will regulate it on its own?

In which case ADs will become alot like NFL owners who will set the markets, negotiate the TV contracts and steer the business side of things.

Next thing you know, the players - who arent old enough to rent a car - will form a union to negotiate as a group for better wages and healthcare benefits, longterm insurance, etc.

And oh, what fun THAT will be!

They should definitely get their full rides.

If a university offers a kid a scholarship BEFORE he signs a big NIL deal, then they should honor that. I also believe it should go both ways.

Absolutely. Men and women athletes who are lucky enough to have NIL deals are like any other student who has a job during college. Don't buy the fake news that NIL athletes are getting paid big bucks.

Two totally unrelated things.

If you have a job but take a side gig should you not get paid for both?

Who needs a side gig with a six-figure job?!

Why not?

Oct 27, 2022, 10:46 PM

If a player is good enough to get a lucrative NIL deal over multiple years, they're almost certainly contributing more to the university's bottom line than a scholarship is worth.

It works out for both parties.

Teams Need a General Manager

Oct 28, 2022, 3:52 AM

To keep all this money, payments and so on straight teams need a general manager or something like that. College football is like the NFL these days.

Dang right it is and will be increasingly so. NCAA cannot regulate that which SCOTUS has ordained.

Your premise is not correct.

Oct 28, 2022, 5:58 AM

The premise of NIL is not to “pay a fair wage”.

The premise is that I own my name and can sell it.

The courts said no one can keep you from selling your name. (But NCAA rules can still exist about having after school jobs)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

***It's not my premise.

Oct 28, 2022, 9:08 AM

It's SCOTUS' premise.

I don't understand what you mean...

Oct 28, 2022, 6:16 AM

"pay for their degree like everyone else". I got a degree, and I didn't pay a cent for it. It's because I earned academic scholarships to cover the entire cost of tuition. Are you saying athletes shouldn't get scholarships they earned for their athletic ability?

If I got a side job during college, should that mean my academic scholarships should have been taken away?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I don't understand what you mean...

Oct 28, 2022, 9:20 AM

I'm suggesting that these big-time NIL kids (who will no doubt grow in numbers as time goes by) are paid professionals. If they want to get a free education, let them qualify academically as you did, or, pay for it using the proceeds from their NIL deals.

And, if an **athletics scholarship no longer forms the basis of why a particular high-NIL-dollar athlete chooses to enroll in a university to play football, perhaps the football program should reduce its scholarship allotment by one and thus allow a sport like, say, women's volleyball, to increase their allotment by one. If that's even allowed.

Re: Should NIL players get full rides?

Oct 28, 2022, 6:21 AM

I don’t understand this question. NIL deals allow players to make money off their name image likeness. So I’d bojangles wants to pay you to advertise they can. It isn’t Clemson or whoever paying you to advertise for bojangles. If you are playing for Clemson, clemsons is making a hell of a lot of money off you. You absolutely deserve the full ride. That’s their “payment” from the school for playing.

Re: Should NIL players get full rides?

Oct 28, 2022, 9:31 AM

Flawed. An NIL deal is an enticement - at least, a big time deal is. Why should a player who has chosen Clemson (for example) because of a sweet NIL deal be given a full scholarship, too?

These kids and the business interests that backed their case to SCOTUS wanted the right to get paid for their labor on the field based on the idea that the programs are enriched by their labor on the field.

And they got it. Which places them in the same category as any other individual seeking a degree from the university - no free rides.

My folks were wealthy and I was too dumb to get an academic scholarship. As a result, my folks leveraged their wealth to buy my education.

Why should it be any different for a suddenly-wealthy NIL athlete?

Re: Should NIL players get full rides?

Oct 28, 2022, 12:18 PM

The enticement isn’t provided by the school! That’s like saying, “hey you’re using your skills from your job in a side venture at home! You’re making good money on that, so why don’t you come to work for free!”

Their NIL isn’t something the school is providing, it’s other third parties who want to use their image for advertisement etc. The school still owes a free education for the massive amounts of money these guys bring in.

Why wouldn't they? Also, any school that didn't offer a scholarship would not be an option for a great player.

I think everyone should just get a cash allowance

Oct 28, 2022, 9:39 AM

(more than a stipend) that would be enough to cover all school expenses and living expenses, etc. The player must then use his own money to pay his way, and learning to budget could be considered a part of the education process. They have to earn it, and if they bail out then they don't get the money.

That would completely balance everyone out and make it where kids are going to join a "program" and not chasing the money (ex. TAMU). By getting paid X amount ("salary") the player would allow his N, I, and L to be used.

I know that seems like an oversimplification of an extremely complex matter, but it's perhaps one way the wild, wild west could be tamed.

I hate the way NIL currently buys players for schools but

Oct 28, 2022, 10:27 AM

They should get a scholarship. Somehow NIL should be regulated. Not sure how it should be done. Making a kid pay tuition would make the divide even greater in the locker room. Would they pay for their tutors, membership to the weight room, and dietician. Where does the pay start and stop.
