Tell me you are practicing more throws to the middle of the field without telling me you are practicing more throws to the middle of the field.

I absolutely LOVE to hear this about using "new" areas of the field!

Well that is the place we never, or hardly ever threw the ball under TE's run every first down str8 up the middle in the teeth of the opposing defenses we played in ever game!!!

I know that every offense has to be able to run if they expect to get one on one coverage from opposing defenses. For what ever the reason, Tony made it easy for opposing defenses to double cover our best WRs, or slot receivers on first down bc, everybody we played had their first down package pre set for our 1st down run up the middle. Knowing they were ready for it, Tony could have thrown the ball across the middle for big gains, but he never used over middle to a slot, or a TE. It was almost always the same up the middle run play that usually got pushed back behind the LOI with loss of yards bringing up 2nd and 12, 2nd and 13!!! If we got a 1st down, it was the same all over again!!!!

Did you know?

Tony Elliot was OC for 7 years.

We went to the playoffs in 6 of those 7 years. Aside from Alabama, THAT'S MORE THAN EVERY OTHER TEAM IN THE COUNTRY.

We played in half of the national championship games in the CFP era. We've won 25% of the national championships in the CFP era. Aside from Alabama, we have more wins and playoff wins than ANYONE else in the country. During Tony's time calling plays, we have had the most successful era in the history of Clemson football. That's 126 years. The best we've ever been, BY FAR.

Have we been perfect? No. But we have been the best we've ever been, in 126 years. A stretch of football hardly ever seen in the entire history of college football.

Maybe you could take a moment to let that truly sink in.

Hopefully the magnitude of that hits you, and you stop your RIDICULOUS, unwarranted b!tching, please. It's VERY unbecoming of a Clemson man.

Yes

Mar 29, 2022, 11:15 PM

And Clemson will miss DW4, Nuk, Sammy, TL16, Tee and healthy JR8 much more than Tony as OC. Go Tigers!

Re: Yes

Why did you include Nuk and Sammy who did not even play on those playoff championship teams? Great players certainly, but not part of the years with Tony as OC. His argument is that Tony Elliott has been indisputably one of the most successful OCs in the history of college football, and certainly the most accomplished in Clemson’s program history. He did an amazing job and if he is not missed it will be because his understudy follows in his steps.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thank you. Exactly.

Mar 30, 2022, 12:22 PM

Although I think Social may be on to something there where can just get good players in every program and it just becomes self-sustaining.

The value of having good coaches is clearly overrated.
????

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, who nends coaches when you have good players.

Mar 30, 2022, 12:20 PM [ in reply to Yes ]

In fact, we have no good coaches on our staff. It's solely the players who did all that winning. That's the way it is in sports - you get good players, and you don't even need coaches. Heck, with the roster we have now we could pretty much get rid of all of coaches and save a crapton of money. Then we take that money and invest in basketball, and then when they get good we can let go of that staff as well. Then invest in another program and repeat the process. Pretty soon we won't need any coaches at Clemson. Just good players.

You're really on to something!

It's a sad thing, but we have a serious problem in this country now with any kind of criticism. I grew in Columbia surrounded by chickens, but I became a Tiger fan the moment I had the faculty to be able to compare a tiger and a chicken. I am an alumni and have always been a believer in Clemson, even in the Hatfield and Tommy West days, but some folks here need to get a little bit thicker skin. Anybody with any understanding watching Clemson football last year knew precisely where our problems lay. DJ was not good. Cry if you want to about me saying that, but it's the truth and he will be the first to tell you. He overshot almost every back shoulder fade to the left side of the field, threw rockets or into the dirt on more slant routes than I care to mention, and when he was accurate, the receiver flat dropped it. Certainly, poor line play exacerbated that, but if no one here knew what was coming when three receivers lined up on the perimeter, then you weren't paying attention. Granted, our receivers couldn't seem to block a lab puppy, but when you always pull the trigger on that play, IN that formation, your offense becomes pedestrian and predictable. There were multiple formations that telegraphed the play and while it is all well and good that Tony had that beautiful run, if I can see it coming, you can bet your sweet kitty that opposing DCs saw it. The point is, we as fans should be able to criticize our play and play calling without other fans becoming apoplectic over it. We all have a right to our opinion. I would ask that it be done tastefully and constructively, but either way, my exasperation or willingness to articulate it does not negate my time spent there, my life as a fan, nor does it detract from my enduring love for Clemson. There is no better place. But when honest fans are shouted down for calling out clear and obvious deficiencies in our game, WTH?

I hope it also means throwing screens to the backs in the flats. That just seems like something we haven’t done much of either. I would rather see that and run the receivers down field than see the quick WR screens. Seems like it would spread the defense more.

Sometimes when you try and play too conservative and not make mistakes you "make mistakes" and don't play well at all.
The middle of the field keeps the defense honest and doesn't allow the drop 8 defense to just run to the sidelines to deter any pass attempts.

I agree in short, "good to hear the whole field may be getting utilized"! I seem to recall many people calling for more passes to the TE's or to slot WR's which typically are "over the middle"!
Whatever it is - you have to stress the defense and not make it easy on them. Covering the whole field is hard to do and you must threaten each patch of grass to stretch the defense out. Which then leaves "space" to operate.

I’ve noticed that

Mar 29, 2022, 12:43 PM

Both the our DC and now Grisham have said they are simplifying things so that we can play faster and more aggressive. I really like to hear that and hope it shows with explosive plays on the field. I think that times over the past few years we have had to keep some explosive playmakers on the sidelines more than we would have liked because the playbook was very complicated. It’s a fine line to walk for sure, but if we can find a way to get our biggest/fastest/strongest guys on the field the most, while they are confident and sure of what they are doing: the best is truly yet to come.

Re: TNET: Grisham 'really pleased' with development of his wide receivers this spring

One of major our problems last season was the lack of production by the receivers. We cannot be a good offense without receivers that can catch and run by people. The jury is still out on whether we have anyone that can scare a defense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree completely

Mar 29, 2022, 9:36 PM

When your wide receiver are able to catch the ball and run by people, it makes the offense better.

Re: TNET: Grisham 'really pleased' with development of his wide receivers this spring

Mar 29, 2022, 1:22 PM

Our receiver corp needs to make the most significant leap of any group next season in leading our offense. This would lead to our 3-4 back rushing game really taking off as well. Combine these with an overall fast-paced offensive scheme and our offensive stats should run away from the rest of the pack in the ACC!!!!

We should always run away from the ACC pack. I just hope they can get us back in the National conversation.

I think the rushing attack we found late last season will open up the passing game. One can only hope.

Mar 29, 2022, 3:01 PM

I'll believe it when I see it, these are obvious things position coaches will say every off season. When they start playing like they did under Jeff Scott, then we'll have something to talk about. Hopefully some fresh faces like Randall and Williams will get them going. The talent is there, they have to run hard on every route, all the games I went to last year it looked like they were just going through the motions and jogging. Possibly due to no faith in the QB...IDK, but the intensity needs to pick up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Grisham 'really pleased' with development of his wide receivers this spring

Mar 29, 2022, 4:49 PM

I agree the intensity and urgency needs to pickup. There were several times last year where it looked like Ross had checked out. I recall an article that discussed lack of depth during the TB years. It seemed like that was an issue last year. I know we had a lot of injuries. But if we really believe next man up then we should have been more prepared.

Love the excitement but I’ll wait up scream with joy until I see it on the field.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wow, hard to hear that Ngata is battling injuries yet again.

Mar 29, 2022, 5:38 PM

Some kids are just starcrossed it seems when it comes to injuries. Hope he can finally get healthy and have a good final season.

Mar 29, 2022, 7:04 PM

I realize the injuries and offensive line were factors last year but something in the scheme was missing. It seemed nothing was easy. Every pass was contested and receivers were never open. The running game was pretty good in my opinion when you consider there was no passing game. Let's hope they figure it out and get the offense dominating again.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’m really happy about what I’ve heard on Streeters offense

Mar 29, 2022, 9:50 PM

Simplify. Play fast. Use the whole field in the passing game. Get under center. What’s next a QB sneak ?!

Good job Streeter

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Basically the same staff said the WRs and QBs were

ready last Spring too. Should hold on the fluff articles until we see them put something together.

Short passes over the middle

Mar 30, 2022, 6:58 AM

Would make my day to see implemented for the Ga Tech game. They are very difficult to defend and will keep the chains moving.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Attacking the whole field sounds great!

Mar 30, 2022, 10:53 PM

Simplifying what I feel is already a generally Simple offense by today's college football standards doesn't. Clemson offense needs innovation not Simplifying. The opposite could probably be said for the defense.
