Shirtgate is likely generation-driven

Mar 3, 2019, 10:17 AM

I'm an alumnus, class of '78. Still raw over the extra sanctions handed down by the ACC in '82. I loathe the unique hypocrisy embodied by baby blue. The favoritism shown by the league to the tobacco road teams makes me bristle. In spite of evidence to the contrary, I still hold Swoffturd accountable for a lot of the injustices we've suffered through the decades. Carolina makes me want to puke. That's partly a generational thing.

For anyone under the age of 40, those feelings probably do not exist--at least, not so intensely. Cornell is very young and from the North State. Only a few years ago he was surrounded by and steeped in Baby Blue love. His peers likely have no deep feelings of animosity toward the 'holes.

So, as an old timer, I don't like seeing a Clemson scholarship football player wearing that putrid emblem at a Clemson basketball game. Let him wear that crap when he's home, amongst his old cronies. But I do realize that's my generational bias. He couldn't know what emotions wearing that shirt would evoke in those of us who endured those dark times.

For those of Cornell's generation, it's probably not an issue at all. For my generation, it's a stick in the eye.

He gets a pass from me for being too young to get it.

"I love this place, I've got a spot already picked out where I want 'em to put me when I die - up there on that ole hill near the stadium. I want to be there so I can hear all them people cheering my Tigers on Saturdays; then I won't have to go Heaven; I'll already be there."- Frank Howard

Maybe so and I'm with you on the extra sanctions

Mar 3, 2019, 10:58 AM

handed down and that will forever be a sore spot for me. But the bottom line for me it's just that it shows disrespect for your fellow student athletes. You just don't do that at a game

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm all Clemson all the time

Mar 3, 2019, 4:11 PM

Wouldn't wear that color blue EVER. But the kid doesn't feel what we do.

It is not generational. Clemson must always hate the Holes.

Mar 3, 2019, 11:05 AM

Period. End of story. There is nothing good in Chapel Hill. Nothing.

It's at least disrespectful.

Mar 3, 2019, 11:30 AM

I don't want someone on our campus that disrespect Clemson. I know teams and the fans of that team come and go but that's expected.

Yes and anyone not brain dead is well aware that the act would be percieved as disrespectful & likely the intended result-no doubt premeditated-"generational excuse" usually attached to subliminally influenced generation known as millenials-pre-programed Manchurian candidates, w/o kill orders, but a series of erroneous ideas and foolish statements they lazily accept as fact-eg. Be different, assimilation is bad, diversity is always good, tolerance is always a virtue, Islam is the religion of peace, USA border enforcement=bad, evil, inherently wrong (so be tolerant of the Front Runnin S4brains Millenials, as they, express their fandom, for the current champions in each of the 3 major sports.

TU.

We’re not all the same, and don’t see things through the same lens, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be civil and respectful towards one another.

Well done.

Sometimes my wife will want to buy me a golf shirt, no uncheat logo but same color of putrid blue. I remind her there is no way I'm wearing it. He needs a sit down meeting with his position coach explaining why it's disrespectful.

Would that chat come before,

Mar 3, 2019, 1:28 PM

or after the one about having the courage of your convictions? ;)

Think about it. Doesn't anyone think CP doesn't know a number of the hoops players? Isn't it a good bet they tease one another. Heck, isn't it possible there's a hoops player that grew up the fan of another program?

Granted, we're not on campus, but this topic seems to be an issue on T-Net...and no where else.

can wear what they want at home, but on campus, and at other Tiger sporting events, they should not wear any college team's gear but Clemson's. Our other sport's coaches should do the same!

Many of the football players are just mercenaries. Just at school to move to the next level. Sad but true.

Ignorant statement to post publicly and current evidence directly contradicts your false assumption(3 day1or2 picks returning 4 another season & a number of schools exist, that provide a more favorable environment & easier access for the "mercenary type", you conjured im your reply

At Clemson in the mid-90’s it seems fellow students were wearing Duke basketball shirts all the time. I never really understood it, but I didn’t get angry over it either. Can’t really recall seeing any scholarship athletes doing it though. You would think athletes would want to support fellow athletes at their own school. Wonder if other football players think he is a great “team” player?

Well done David, very well said.

I’m 46 and I’m noticing the older I get the more my opinion is just that.....my opinion.

Never in a million years would I have pulled that stunt. And my friends wouldn’t have either. Some of my buddies growing up actually did receive a scholarship to play football for our beloved Tigers. Watching them play was a blast and can’t imagine any of them doning another color.

But that was our generation, I have teenage kids who play ball all the time and they view things differently. I’m trying to understand them but it’s a challenge........

I don’t think it was the smartest thing for this kid to do but without knowing all the details I am not going to throw him under the bus. It could have been as simple as a dare, a bet or some other youthful reason. Let’s see what the kid brings to Clemson football. When we played UGA every year a close friend and UGA graduate and I would bet on the game. The loser put the winners car tag on their car until the next year.

As a youth I am sure we have all done some things that seemed funny at the time but blew up in our face instead. I plead guilty!

Is it too much to ask a player to respect his school, team,

Mar 4, 2019, 8:14 AM

and scholarship by not wearing opposing team colors to a game? I don't think so. It doesn't matter what year you were born, that's just common sense.
