Shipley's Speed...
Sep 12, 2022, 11:15 AM

I really want to see Shipley break one for 60-80 yards to see his speed - don't recall seeing him with any really long runs where he outran the defense. Don't think he has Etienne speed or Spiller speed but thinking more like James Davis speed. but more shifty? Thought I read consistently sub 4.5 40, but that's without pads.

He definitely has a lot of speed and much more than James Davis. I think spiller and Erie me were a bit quicker between the tackles. Shipley has had so many shoestring tackles thy prevented him from tak in Nanit to the house. He just needs to get a tad quicker and stronger.

Shoestring tackles may in part be due to Ship trying to hard

At least that was the theory postulated by one well known poster.

I don’t recall him having the blocking to accomplish such a feat.

If we hit a few 20+ yd plays, it will loosen up the defense

and getting run down. It was probably the first 2-3 games if i remember. I think i agree. He's more like a shiftier James Davis.

ETN would have broken a couple of those runs long IMO. But if you have to have 4 yards, our RB group can get it. IF the OL does it's job.
Lots of folks worried about performance. Yes we are 2-0, but against better teams we could get exposed in areas. While i appreciate the optimism, I just don't have the confidence like i have in the past.
All that to say, i think this season will be more fun to watch. while I was fishing by halftime in past years, it's nice to watch a game with intrigue.
My 2 cents. i gotta get back to work.

ETN had tree trunks for legs that could bash their way through first contact and THEN torch people. Ship needs a cleaner avenue to showcase the speed, methinks.

He's een a shoestring away from that occurring. It's coming though. Once the oline gels ( patience grasshopper) you'll see that probably once or twice game. Dude has top end speed ( somewhere between ETN and Spuller ) but he's also cat quick. He can cut and be gone. That's his game. But he also seeks out contact and finishes strong but only when he realizes he can't house it

I do think that's one thing our offense has been missing in addition to the more commonly discussed issues(OL, WR, QB) is a lack of big plays.

We were near the bottom of the country last year in explosive plays.

The only team in the ACC that had less last year was Duke.

Off tackle every first down doesn’t produce many explosive plays

The big thing is he's been up against stacked boxes his entire career because DJU and our WR's were a train wreck.
DJU has a big arm. Like, a huge arm, the kind of arm that allows OC's to draw their passing plays on longer paper. The problem is it doesn't connect with anything at the moment. The second he starts lighting people up down the field the way Trevor or Tajh Boyd did, rest assured you can watch those extra hats skedaddle right on outta the box and we'll start seeing long runs happen again.
That said, our OL is still pretty durn bad.

It's a catch 22. He's not big enough to consistently

deflect first contact, and if he does put on the bulk needed to do that (and frankly, survive 20 carries a game for an entire FBS season) he's going to be slower.
