Shipley totally did that on his own. Great mindset to due that. He was supposed to just set up for a screen.

Pretty impressive on both 1 and 5's part. Dj anticipated and lead him beautifully.

I think the play is designed to draw the d up to cover the screen, then once he moves up, Shipley runs by him. I think DJ actually was expecting Ship to do that.

Scramble Improvised. A Great One.

Sometimes the "playground" plays are the most dazzling. Kind of like the naked boot DJ walked in for the touchdown.

Sure looks like DJ knew Shipley was releasing downfield

if not, that's a fast reaction on his part to see it

I think Ship said in postgame interview that he took off

when he saw DJ scrambling for a receiver. The other thing that makes me think it was improv was that DJ threw the heater. I think he would have put more planned "touch" on it if it were designed. Just my 0.02.

Smart move by Shipley no doubt but even better by DJ. Notice how DJ kept looking down the middle to hold the safeties there, right until the last second? THAT was a smart play, otherwise Ship coulda gotten rocked by the safety making a B-line

Improvised. It looked like the play call was for Shipley to be out on the left flat but when he saw DJ start to get pressured, he started down the left sideline. Luckily for the Tigers DJ saw him and laid it in his outstretched hands...

Dj’s reaction once he turned to the left and released was way too quick for it to be improvised. Dj knew he would be headed down the sideline

I'm not a coach but I will say it was a heck of a play and exciting as any I can remember.

Looked like a design/called wheel route to me. Shipley was cheating forward the entire time he was showing screen.... and DJ looked off the CB and Safety - froze them both - and then he turned back to Shipley after he was past the CB.

Sorry - not showing a screen pass - just a flat route.

I don't think it was called in the sense that that's where

the play was designed to go because you generally don't design plays that literally take 5 seconds to develop. The ball is snapped at the 1 second mark in that video and DJ doesn't throw it until the 6 second mark. I think that was 3rd or 4th read there.
However, it does look like they had worked on Shipley releasing downfield as the safety valve instead of staying in the flat. DJ didn't look down the LOS for Shipley out in the flat.. he knew he was releasing down field.
Great throw and catch too.

Called as Ship 'on the wheel,' being the checkdown receiver.

Obviously DJ knew where to look when others were covered so it was definitely a called play in that sense.
