Dating a women who makes significantly more money…

Dec 9, 2021, 8:58 PM

Had never previously dated a woman who made more than me and def not one that makes over twice as much. She does compliance law for a corporation.

I could def get used to this; great steaks on the grill (not FBCoach Steaks) , buys me nice things randomly, pays for expensive dinners downtown. Maybe I could be a trophy husband one day if I play my cards right…

Anyone else with a woman who makes significantly more? What’s the dynamic like longterm?

I do fine, but my wife is definitely the breadwinner.

Dec 9, 2021, 9:58 PM

We also have the dynamic that I work from home, so I'm always the one to watch the kid if he gets sick. I also cook exclusively. As far as superficial gender roles go, we are a bit flipped. Nevertheless, it's never been an issue.

For one, money isn't a measurement of self-worth for either of us, so the income imbalance is just a matter of fact. It all goes into the same pot, and that pot pays for what we need.

Secondly, and sort of related to the first, I don't measure myself as a man based on how much I make compared to my partner. Her success is not a point of contempt for me, but instead motivates me to succeed more. Also, watching our son when he's sick, or cooking for the family, makes me feel more like a provider (You can hear Gus Fring's voice, "What does a man do, Walter?"). So, to me, the fact that I can provide and protect a healthy, happy family more than just with a paycheck, is how I measure myself.

TLDR; And I'm not saying this is you, but the men who feel threatened by a woman who makes more than them, or is more successful than them, have other self-confidence issues they need to work out.

Especially in this day and age, where there are a lot of women ballers out there.

Always good to have some extra dough, but definitely doesn't make a person who they are - I feel sorry for people that feel that way.

I've been broke as hail and not broke, and have always (for the most part) been able to maintain happiness.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dec 9, 2021, 10:15 PM

the medical field (I married a pharmacist), are great humans to land anyways. The money is just a perk.

I think the young guys can be forgiven if the paycheck issue is a thing for them. Enough life experience, especially if you have some downs, will teach there is more to it. The happiest time in my bachelorhood was right after I got fired and had to move home for a few months in my mid-20s. The next job I took was half the pay of the one before, but I was living in Charleston and making enough to get by. It was a good lesson that if you're with the right people and have the right priorities, you can make anything work. It's harder, no doubt, but certainly not exclusive of genuine happiness.

She let me drive her Caddy and took me on real nice vacations.

She got transferred to the home office in California right before I graduated and I’ve not heard from her since.

Yes, yes I did. Even married her for a while. It was fun for a long time. Parties, travel, fancy soirees, expensive gifts, shaking hands with interesting peoples, etc. Turned out we had some philosophical differences on a couple of things. Priorities were somewhat different. You would think that after knowing each other for a couple of years it would be more obvious. But, live and learn! It worked out well enough in the end for me. After the lawyers and stress and sleepless nights. Remember, women can think of sheet in their sleep and are generally more devious than men. Reason and common sense have no bearing most times and saying what you are thinking should only be done after careful consideration. Also, don't fall for all that crying and crap, it's usually just another way to get what they want. Sounds cynical, I know, but just think about things...thoroughly. There are some good ones out there. You might have one.

Re: Dating a women who makes significantly more money…

Dec 10, 2021, 1:52 PM

I had a wonderful GF in Tennessee. She looked a lot like the Darlin girl on Andy Griffin Show. Not so pretty but her shape and demeanor made her very attractive to me. She made a ton of money but more than that her house was near being paid off and her 26' boat, truck and car were paid off.

Typically, our biggest argument was who pays for dinner or us trying to buy things for each other and being refused. She never took advantage of me and neither did I her. Her one son was a fine 17 yr old who respected his mama and every other adult. He was such a good kid I lobbied for an extended curfew for him.

The only drawback to her was that she had some really evil friends. They laughed when they found out, on our first date, that her son had backed into my black mercedes. That's evil, anyway you shake it.

Imo, if you can nurture a relationship until it develops like that you'll be set for life. Kill all her evil friends and live happily ever after.

You know, 'woman,' rather than women might have been more accurate.
