Thinking it’s a 75-25% chance that DJ returns for 2022..

Nov 8, 2021, 9:01 PM

since he’s improving slowly for the most part each game and if he can get 2 wins in the next 3 games remaining and a small bowl win..he’s back.

During the off season he may need to lose some weight and muscle up, practice with his WR’ers more, learn to better gauge his throwing velocity, be more aware of his pocket presence, work on his footwork, gain more confidence, etc..

and Dabo & O staff will need to work up a better scheme for him so to use his positives..like considering rolling him & line out so to slow down the many D rushes & sacks on him.

With DJ going into his JR year with more confidence, experience and having the Texas QB Savior coming in to push him, Clemson should be much better Offensively when adding in the RB’s and a more mature line, but still not a probable Top 4 contender unless things break our way.

I think it's a 100-0% chance. I've never been near the transfer portal, but I have to think it is a very lonely, depressing place if no one picks you up.

I have no doubt that DJ would be picked up. Probably by a team that doesn't favor the RPO game. Most likely a west coast team. I think he will eventually excel in that environment. Especially with an offensive line...

Nov 8, 2021, 9:17 PM

DJ is undoubtedly smart enough (and is surely getting good advice from his dad) to realize that the Clemson coaches have done a fine job in 'coaching him up.' Surely DJ can compare his film from early in the season, when his play was 'early in the developmental' stage vs. the last two games, when his play was actually pretty good.

DJ's also got to know that both the O-Line and WR Corp will be much better in 2022 (showing at the start of 2022) than the very best that the 2021 O-Line and WR units will produce.

Where else can he go (among high profile programs) and still have those three things going for him like he'll get at Clemson next year?

We will know the answer to that question pretty quick( I hope). If Cade is as good as advertised he will not ride the bench very long if this offense sputters at all next season. It appears this season we have no other option but to stick with DJ based on what has happened thus far. Next season that will not be the case. And if Cade is named the starter, I believe DJ will hit the transfer portal the very next day. Could be decided as early as the spring game (if Cade enrolls in January) but more than likely not until 3 or 4 games into the next season based on our coaches history with Watson and Laurence finally being named our starting QBs when it was very apparent to most everyone else from the start except our coaching staff than these two guys should have been the starters from day one!

Sounds like you are predicting a possible replay of the 2018 season. I’d love to see that. But I believe starting KB the first 4 games of 2018 was brilliant coaching and not a case of the coaching staff not being able to see what was so “apparent to most everyone else”.

He seems very comfortable with Beaux in the line-up. Which is only natural. Maybe the same with DCollins also.

Me thinks he wants to go next level and probably Dabo and staff was the only coaches that didn't blow smoke up his and his dad's rear. They knew he had mechanical issues. Not sure what weight he came in as but LBB is spot on. Needs to shed a few... But he is tall and thick.

He needs to work on his internal clock, but so did DW4. Thing with ddub, he is Houdini, DJ probably never will be. I really think he's shown improvement at the mesh point and I really think Ship will help him like ETN did with Trevor.

LBB, I agree

Nov 9, 2021, 12:20 AM

I feel that he is so much worse than DeShaun and Trevor a large percentage of the fanbase is already done with him. He's just missing too much in mechanics, urgency, touch, etc. to be salvaged IMO.

Nov 9, 2021, 1:46 AM

First, so good to see you back and to be dialoguing with you Bill! All the best to you.

Now, on to my thoughts:
- DJ is a great kid. He will keep working hard and getting better. It is obvious that our staff lacks confidence at the position beyond DJ which has really made DJ one dimensional. He is just not at a place where he is processing well enough without the threat of the run. There have already been some health/injury issues and we cannot afford to lose him. The offense is very vanilla then. I do not think he is practicing with an urgency to be a threat on the ground, so when he is asked to do so sparingly in games, he is just not confident. So, it’s hard to be decisive and hard to really put pressure on the defense.

- DJ is actually a gamer. I have watched him at Bosco several years. And there are lots of games he put the team on his back. I am actually surprised we haven’t seen that more here yet. He had good athletes around him at Bosco and I am guessing that he only had to make a pre-snap read and then trust that his first or second read would come open. He made tight window, on time throws. I think he is being taught how to fully process now and he is just still in the weeds. Throw in inconsistencies at OL and WR, and it is a tough season (we used to call it the sophomore slump). I think DJ is going to be fine and there are going to be some all-you-can-eat buffets for a bunch of “Tiger Fans” with crow as the feature item. DJ’s ceiling is still high in my opinion and I will really be surprised if he doesn’t re-solidify himself as a top QB nationally next season.

- What happens if things don’t go DJ’s way?… Good question. Of Cade were to come in and grab the #1 spot in the spring, then I think it is highly likely we see a transfer portal transfer. But if Cade were to win it during the season, I think DJ would would finish the semester. What value is there really in quoting on your team mid-semester? Both our transfer portal RB’s would have benefited from crucial snaps this season has they stayed, that could have made them even more attractive portal options had they chosen to stay. I really don’t understand the reason behind mid-season declarations for the portal. It only isolates the player and often eliminates their continued pathway towards solidifying themselves as options for the next level.

My hunch: DJ will make strides in the off season and thrive next year. If Cade passes DJ in the spring he may likely enter the portal.
If he passes him in the fall, the. I think DJ will finish the semester and seek a change of scenery the next year.

Re: Thinking it’s a 75-25% chance that DJ returns for 2022..

Nov 9, 2021, 8:49 AM

He will be back next season, in the off season he needs to find some QB training that's not Clemson related (through the spring/summer and 9 games) it's clear nobody on the Tigers staff can help him, he has too much talent to give up on, those 2 games he played in last season could become the norm with the right coaching.

Nov 9, 2021, 8:50 AM

Time heals all wounds, but I don't think a year will fix that list of QB issues you have there.

In my opinion we are about to see a TL/KB replay in the fall next year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

agree with all of that except scheming to roll him out.

Nov 9, 2021, 9:09 AM

He's just too slow for consistent designed roll-outs. I remember one play in the Louisville game where the LB caught him from behind like a greyhound catching my grandma with a pork chop tied to her walker.

Nov 9, 2021, 9:26 AM

If we had a poll of the WRs, that would tell who the team believes will be the 2022 QB.
For the remaining four games, I just hope and support each player getting/staying healthy and progressing for the hard work they have put in. 6-3 isn't so bad, 10-3 will be even better for everyone.

Nov 9, 2021, 9:59 AM

I am amazed at how many in this thread seem to think that Cade is going to be so far and away more talented than DJ that the only question is whether Cade takes the job in the spring or a few games into the fall.

How quickly we forget what recruiting websites thought about DJ before he got onto campus based on his talent level in high school.

I give DJ a lot of credit. He’s stuck with it, tuned out the background noise, and is showing continuous improvement over the course of the season.

Key ingredients of a Clemson man.

We better hope it's a 100% he returns. He will have good experience and we'll be better around him. Plus, don't want to try to start a true Freshman. There are not many TL16 that come around.

Nov 9, 2021, 11:42 AM

Glad to see you back in the neighborhood Bill! While we all want DJ to grow his skill sets, I will be interested in the QB competition which will start in Jan 2022.

Klubnik appears to be accurate, mobile and an outgoing extrovert. IMHO he will learn the playbook quickly and press DJ for the starting job 3-4 weeks into the season. His leadership qualities will be difficult for DJ to overcome. So my question is “how long will he stay?” more so than “will he come back?”

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Serious Question for the OP: Why do think it's 25%...

Nov 9, 2021, 1:09 PM

he transfers?

DJ cannot transfer if he still harbors dreams of the NFL. His only hope in that regard is to return next year and play at a different level. Transferring after this season would tarnish him as a quitter.

For the record, IMO, DJ is not NFL material because he just isn't accurate enough, can't read defenses if his life depended on it and locks in on his first read. If he only had one of those 3 problems, there might be hope for him.

Re: Thinking it’s a 75-25% chance that DJ returns for 2022..

Nov 9, 2021, 10:22 PM

I don't know how you guys can speak encouragingly about DJU. His QBR is a freakin' 44. That puts him as the 98th QB in the NCAA.

The only improvement you are seeing is better play calling - limited to the few things that DJU can do semi-well & a commitment to the running game..

If he is getting better at all it is because he had nowhere else to go but up.
