Clemson Football: I shall play for you the song of my people

College football is just around the corner, and nothing makes the reality of college hit close to home as much as hearing the music that sets college football apart from the NFL. Full Story »

2008, I had not been to a Clemson game in several years,

but now was in the stands with season tickets. When they played the Alma Mater, every hair on my arms stood up as I did our Alumni wave to "O'er the Mountain Height."

Bring it, season can't get here soon enough!

Man, if I could do Tiger Band for a 6th year, I'd be all over it. There was nothing better than watching games from behind a baritone and taking some orange pride on the road, no matter how far away. It's not a competition, but Dr. Spede and Tiger Band win anyways.

Couldn't find a picture of Death Valley for the video?

Jun 23, 2015, 2:40 PM

That's Jordan Hare, not Death Valley in the picture on the video.

It's like the little old lady telling Coach Howard back in the day: "Coach Howard, When Tiger Band fires up Tiger Rag and the Tigers get ready to run down The Hill, I get so excited, I about wet my pants!"

As in Tiger Band once called it two tweets and sheer pandemonium. There is nothing like that feeling being on the field heading towards the hill the crowd so loud you cant hear the trumpet to your left and only the boom of the bass drums banging quarter notes in unison to keep the band together. I'd love to form the tunnel and take it to hill again

Yep! I know what you mean; I was in Tiger Band Drum Line '83-'87. Though attending Clemson games prior to being old enough to remember, nothing could have prepared me for my first pre-game, Sept. 3, 1983! There is nothing more amazing than the sites, sounds, and experiences provided while on that "Paw" in the center of Death Valley!

I think theirs should be, We are present day Bonnie and Clyde, We will lie, cheat, and steal, steal, steal!!! While their band is playing their fight song, they should be getting sprayed with Fire Extinguishers for a smoke screen!!!

That takes me to so many good places...

Tailgating as a child before there were upper decks; knowing that all was well with the world, as only a child can know.

Cheering for my Tigers in the student section with all of my friends, looking forward to the adventures that only a Saturday night in Clemson can bring.

Watching us play with my folks after graduation up in the seats that I occupied as a child.

Celebrating glorious touchdowns with my own kids in my own IPTAY seats, looking forward to post game festivities and a quiet drive back to NC with two kids asleep in the back seat.

I don’t know exactly what that song will bring in the future, but it will be good.

This is a significant part of my life's soundtrack and it brings only the best of memories.

That is why Clemson is so special to me. (tear in my eye)

Go Tigers!

Seems like we never hear the drums at the end anymore...

Jun 23, 2015, 8:24 PM

I remember that growing up and while I was in school. Are we just too far away in the stadium or have they dropped that part?

Re: Seems like we never hear the drums at the end anymore...

Jun 23, 2015, 8:27 PM

We've had seats near the band since we were Tiger Band parents, and they still do the drums at the end when they play Tiger Rag all the way through twice (after a touchdown, etc.) When they only play it once, they usually don't do the drums because of time.

Unfortunately we are on the opposite end quite close to the opposing team band....Usually only a pain when it is GT or FSU. Glad to hear they still play it!

I lived in Johnstone C-3 facing the quad right over the underpass. On Saturdays the band would leave the band room, March thru the little valley below, and out to the road, directly under my room. There is nothing like being awakened to Tier Rag as the band made it's way to Death Valley. The metal walls of Johnstone reverberated to the notes of our fight song. Good times. Great memories!
