I am sensing a little hostility here, did I aim my criticism directly at you, or am I just disagreeing with you?, which is impossible these days without getting people triggered.

and yeah, I think the consensus is that resisting arrest is dumb.

These guys are spot on. You are either oblivious or in total denial. The consensus apparently hasn't reached a lot of black men who get killed by police.

you are promoting a blanket statement about all blacks, then forming an argument around it. That is what is called a logical fallacy. And your smoking gun is a youtube video.

Ok bud, objectivity has left the building.

May 2, 2021, 8:58 PM

Tbalm: "nobody thinks the proper thing is to resist arrest"

Mike Muse (A Black man writing in an article titled "Why Black People Resist Arrest"): We resist physically not because we want to, but because there is no other way to communicate when the people arresting us are deaf to our words.

https://level.medium.com/why-black-people-resist-arrest-c43d99e0f961

From Mother Earth Jones: "6 Good Reasons A Black Person Might Resist Arrest (For Black men in America, cooperating isn't such a no-brainer)"

https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2014/08/six-reasons-black-person-might-resist-arrest-michael-brown-dante-parker-eric-garner/

So, there you have it - black people have to resist, there is no other way, and there are at least 6 GOOD reasons to resist. There are other examples, but you said "nobody", which is demonstrably false. It's clear to me, and anybody who is paying attention, that many, many black men not only feel totally justified in resisting, but are actually encouraged to do so by "leaders" and role models who totally fail to discourage it.

I guess I could get into a long-winded rant about why we are attempting to give law enforcement unreasonable amounts of power, on top of the voter suppression efforts being voted on in roughly 38 statehouses right now, and how this all tied together as an orchestrated move towards right Wing authoritarianism and away from our broken Democracy, but that would be lost on you.

it is not the country I want to live in, sorry that you do.

It's NOT a democracy, it's a Representative Republic! And it's a d#mn shame that point has to keep being reiterated. You want to talk about 'giving law enforcement unreasonable power'? Look no further than Barry Barack Hussein and his ferret-faced DOJ 'wingman" Eric Holder. They corrupted everything from the IRS to your local post office.

Gawds.

I am so sick of that particular idiocy I want to vomit. IT IS BASICALLY THE SAME @#%#ING THING.

What the GOP is in fact doing right now circumvents the entire intent of both a "democracy" and a "republic" because they are gerrymandering...in other words, they are allowing their representatives to pick their own voters, not the other way around and they're about to try to re-take the House by doing still more of it. We could literally see the GOP win the House with about 41-42% of the vote. At that point the system has been bent to such an extent elections are virtually useless.

Increasingly, the GOP is just finding ever-more artificial ways to enforce increasingly unpopular (and hostile) minoritarian rule. Period. It's a house of cards that is going to come crashing down around the party's ears at some point.

The whole point of a legitimate election is you've got to get out there and work to fulfill the will of the people. If you've got a fundamentally broken system that requirement is not fulfilled and in gerrymandering districts America has in fact become something other than a "democracy" or a "republic", it's actually just going through the motions of either.

I want law enforcement to have what they need to enforce the law and make our country safer for all Americans. I want to make it as difficult as possible to cheat in our elections. Instead I see a corrupt socialist left utilizing media and education to delude, indoctrinate, and drive one false narrative after another in a brazen power grab that will ultimately only benefit wealthy politicians and thier cronies. I don't want to live in a country like that and I don't know why you do either.

I don’t want that kind of country either. Show me one case in history where the left decided to stop it’s advancement and allow more freedom. It’s never happened and it never will. They will not stop in this country either. They feel and smell power right now. The day is coming where we will have to decide if enough is enough. It will not be pleasant.

Question

May 3, 2021, 7:57 AM [ in reply to Re: You are flat out wrong, and here's the proof: ]

When an officer kills a suspect, before any video or evidence has emerged, do you find yourself naturally siding with the officer and giving him the benefit of the doubt? Why or why not?

Re: Question

May 3, 2021, 8:39 AM

I don’t “side” with anyone until the facts come out. I’ll admit my suspicion is that the officer probably had just cause. My reason is that I don’t believe cops wake up and say “Hope I get to go shoot somebody today”. Further reasoning is that evidence usually shows the cop had just cause.

Re: Question

May 3, 2021, 8:44 AM

Thank you for the response, but I was asking Smiling. I'm glad you wait until the facts come out before siding, but I wouldn't automatically assume just cause. Although most of the time this is the case, it still predisposes you to bias in the discussion.

Re: Question

May 3, 2021, 7:15 PM [ in reply to Question ]

No, I don't naturally side with the officer. I hope that the officer acted properly, however I know that there are some bad cops, and some cops who make terrible mistakes, so I wait to see what happened. For the record, contrary to what Tbalm was mouthing off about at one point (he has been wrong about so many things I can't keep up anymore) I said that Chauvin was in the wrong from the very beginning. While I have met some totally crooked cops in my life, I do think cops have an extremely difficult job, and the vast majority of them are trying their best to treat everyone fairly and respectfully while still protecting the public and enforcing the law. I do not believe the narrative, based on a huge generalization and a lot of shaky assumptions, that cops are systemically racist, but I do belive there are bad cops, some of whom are racists, and cops that need better training, and some cops who are just incompetent.

If a cop uses deadly force when they have no reason to believe their life, or the life of another person is in immediate danger, and somebody dies as a result, then that cop should pay a heavy price. If a cop uses excessive force which results in or contributes to the death of a suspect (George Floyd) they should pay a heavy price. I can't be more clear about that. While I may be biased because I generally trust the police, I always wait to see what actually happened before forming any kind of opinion, because I know that every situation is different.

Thinks it’s ok to resist arrest to why it makes sense that people think it’s ok to resist arrest?

Also, a white man calling black men “uncle toms” is no less offensive than any other racial epithet, IMHO.

entirely of "and they should call this channel "Uncle Tom's Barbershop""

Instead of debating the substance of what these men took the time to articulate in a seemingly sincere manner, he began with a tired, cliched, and frankly racist bout of "name calling". Talk about not disagreeing like a man........

May 3, 2021, 8:51 AM

Seems to me the reaction was to his post title. No, I don't condone using "Uncle Tom's Barbershop" or any other usage of this term. If the reaction was to that part, fair enough. But it seemed they were reacting to what he first said.

Either way, that YouTube channel is a joke and not to considered seriously for any evidence. And no, it's not a good look when white people here post it with an "Ah ha! Black man agreeing with me on criticism of black people!"

Legit question.....

May 3, 2021, 8:59 AM

I feel like I've seen one of these guys posted in the past over the years. I watched about half that video and understand from it that he's a Harvard economics professor. No clue who the guy on the right was but he articulated his opinion well enough that even if someone disagrees, they should be able to understand his position.

Why shouldn't it be considered seriously? Sure two guys (even if highly educated and titled) don't close the case on any argument, but they seem just as credible as data points in the debate as any other.

Re: Legit question.....

May 3, 2021, 9:04 AM

You'll forgive me (and perhaps even excuse it if it's a ridiculous position) if I'm not going to give play to a video called "The Bad ### Mother ###### Problem" with a poorly drawn cartoon of the host as the cover, and one that white folk here gleefully post to apparently criticize the entire black population.

Perhaps there is substance, but thus far, the presentation is pretty ####### poor.

Honestly, listen to the clip if you haven't.

May 3, 2021, 9:15 AM

It's pretty interesting. Like I said, not world-changing, but if we are talking about listening to each other and taking it all in, it's an interesting perspective these two guys bring to the table, and the older guy shares a perspective on it that stems from his own fascinating real-world dichotomy.

Again, not having paid much attention to the channel, I strongly suspect that both of these guys have some opinions on race relations in the US that the OP would strongly disagree with as well.
