Seeking advice for traveling to Papa John's Cardinal Stadium

Sep 4, 2017, 10:25 PM

I'm looking at making a road trip for the Louisville game. Can anyone who went two years ago give me some advice?

Were a lot of tickets being sold outside the game two years ago?

Any advice on parking?

Any recommendations for food?

I've been to Louisville as a teen, and I toured Churchill Downs and the Louisville Slugger factory. Other than those places, any suggestions of sights to see?

TIA

Go Tigers!

I would advise staying downtown, not at the hotels near the stadium. We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn near the stadium. I wish we would have stayed downtown. Just more to do there.

Not sure about tickets. We had our own.

We toured some distillerys. We also went underground zip lining in a huge man made cavern. We also did a Segway tour.

Have fun!

Thanks! The underground zip line sounds like fun! I'll have to look that up.

Parking - Many, many Clemson fans parked at Church Hill Downs and walked the 2-3 blocks to the stadium. They actually had an unofficial tailgate going on there for Clemson fans. You can visit the track and then leave your car there until after the game.

We also visited the Louisville Slugger Factory downtime to pass time that morning before the game.

We stayed across the river about 20 miles into Indiana.

Fans were actually very cordial there even though Louisville teams always seem very thuggish.

Good luck and have fun!!!

Perhaps surprisingly, downtown Louisville has attractions that don't require money to enjoy. The Big Four bridge is a converted Railway bridge, now fit for pedestrians to walk their way across the Ohio to Indiana and some excellent pubs and restaurants just there on the other side, in Jeffersonville. Indeed, the entire riverfront has been designed for foot traffic for a few miles in a tremendous landscaping project years in the making and now maturing nicely. Simply find the Yum Arena (the huge copy machine by the bridge, lol) with the wavy roof, then continue walking on the Waterfront Park which abuts it.

Downtown, the Louisville Slugger Museum is always a great attraction and an educational visit for baseball geeks, where the evolution and reality of making bats takes place right in front of you. The Muhammed Ali Museum is actually a beautiful experience, also surprising, considering it's sole subject bias, but they made it interactive (shadowbox with the Champ) and it features fascinating details about his life and travels. Frazier Arms Museum offers a history of weaponry in the world and is alsi surprisingly interesting. The strip along Main Street where all of these places can be found is also home to well-preserved facades of buildings erected in the 1900's.

Out at Churchill Downs, there is the Kentucky Derby Museum, another rich trove of history where you can watch every Derby ever recorded, read or listen to tales of the horses and jockeys, trainers and owners. Yes, opposing teams often tailgate there and it can be a hoot. Parking tends to be available as well, even for late arrivals.

Mature fans can take organized Bourbon Trail tours or grab a map and negotiate them on your own to distilleries famous for their booze. Yes, sampling is tolerated and even encouraged, lol. Kentucky is well-regarded for its horses, tobacco and booze among it's primary merits - a sinner's delight! - and which also includes definitely very pretty women.

The entire town - outside of lamentable UK Wildcat fans - is inordinately proud of the team in all sports. The size of a pro town, Louisville's university has no competition as a sporting attraction - the secret to its rapid rise as an athletic power and the source if a rich corporate environment's donations. The expansion you will see at the North end of the stadium is a 56 Million dollar expansion entirely paid for by donations, with no state input. It can be a most enjoyable place to tour and waste a little time.

We're flying out next friday and staying at the hotel beside the airport. Maybe its a marriott, cant remember. Last time we went, the upperdeck was about 80% full and i did see quite a few tickets for sale. But it was a thursday night game so probably will have a bigger crowd this time. It was a really good football/party atmosphere both in and outside the stadium. Youll have fun.

BTW i wouldnt buy tickets yet. Wait till a little closer to gametime. Alot depends on this weekend's results
