An "I told you so" that I hate to post

Jan 15, 2013, 6:39 PM

Years ago on this board, I warned about giving the president unchecked authority to ###### up rights in the wake of a tragedy (Sept. 11). What followed was a flood of mockery, insults and Bush love.

Now, we see what happens. Obama has continued the Bush administration's practice of squandering civil liberties in the name of security. And, surprise surprise, using a national tragedy as an excuse to do it.

Y'all are smart folks, fellow Tigers. It's time everyone realizes that there isn't a GOP or Democratic Party, but rather just One Big Federal Government That Wants Citizens in Check. And the political football games it makes us play keeps us nice and divided the way they want it.

Hold on. It's going to be an even bumpier ride.

How was your last paycheck?

Stupid stimulus package that all the smart people said was stupid expired, and the payroll tax cut expired with it, taking away my Obama tax break, which I blame on Obama.

Of course.

Jan 15, 2013, 6:44 PM

Bush administration snatched up civil liberties and privacy. Created Homeland Security to watch us. Doled out a few tax breaks to keep people placated. Those who spoke up were told to love America and stop questioning the government. We needed these sacrifices, after all.

Now that they got away with it, the Obama administration has a nice follow up with economic liberties and gun rights while continuing the Bush practices.

A beautiful one-two punch, and both sides played it perfectly together.

As I said in another post..... someone else said it don't know who.......

Do not give to your friend any power that may someday fall into the hands of your enemy.

The person who said this was a GOP person reluctant to give Bush those powers. And now, every president from here on out will continue that trend until congress changes it.

Jan 16, 2013, 11:33 AM

as citizens, it's our responsibility to keep a keen eye on government overreach. But how are people any less "free" in America today, compared to previous generations? It seems we are richer and more mobile. We are living longer and better. These are not indicative of a free society in decline.

Regarding the specific freedom of our right to bear arms, we have more guns floating around today than ever before. They are relatively cheap & easy to come by. I doubt our forefathers had this kind of access:

For the record, I'm not defending the massive expansion of federal government that we have seen over the past few decades. I'm just saying that, regarding freedoms, we have never been more free to live the lives we want.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jan 16, 2013, 11:47 AM

do anything meaningful in your life, as a direct result of the income tax and the federal reserve system, is not a condition of freedom. You want to go to college, loan. You want to get a car, loan. You want to get a house, loan. You want to start a business, loan. Being indentured servants to banks is not freedom.

Without the income tax and the easy credit system created by the federal reserve which destroys the power of savings, you could buy a car with one year of savings on a $50,000 per year job. Right now, that $20,000 goes to taxes. The same is true of any other major decision in your life.

The federal government is exceedingly good at hiding its tyranny and executing a soft fascism. Just because we live on a friendly plantation doesn't mean we are free.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We do disagree.

Jan 16, 2013, 1:09 PM

Not everyone from previous generations bought a new car, or got a 4-year college degree. The expectation that we MUST do these things is a perception of our culture, thanks to poor parenting, advertising, and (we do agree here) cheap credit.

In my opinion, the easy credit culture has more to do with deregulation and hyper-consolidation in the banking industry, in a movement away from community banks toward a disconnected investor model. This is where pushing paper became more important than making good loans.

As an example, when my parents were buying their first house the bank required a 20% down payment with evidence that the down payment wasn't a gift. Also, the bank my parents worked with to get the loan knew the property well, and had a stake in the community it served. Not so with mega-banks and paper-traders.

When my parents went to school, they chose the institutions they could afford. That included military college for my father, and a stint in armed services. He sent me to Clemson only after agreeing to how much I would need to earn while I was in college to pay my part of the bill.

That's what is missing from today's culture... restraint and reason. Blaming our societal ills on the federal government is just passing the buck.

You're looking at the symptoms as if they are the problem.

Jan 16, 2013, 1:31 PM [ in reply to We do disagree. ]

I agree with you about megabanks and papertraders. Research the Fed from an Austrian Economics point of view. Tom Woods' book "Meltdown" is excellent.

Those things wouldn't be possible without the Fed and its monopoly on money.

Also I agree with you about responsibility. But I'm talking about responsible people. It is impossible in today's world to live a cash-only life, unless you get some help from a trust fund or from parents (and there's nothing wrong with that.) If you don't go to college, you can barely earn enough to pay for rent and groceries. Where are you going to work if you can't get there? You have to have at least an old beater of a car to get to and fro, and getting one of those even requires a loan for people with no marketable skills.

Capitalism is called capitalism because it is a system with little to no government where individuals accumulate capital and use it to purchase or invest. In other words, to save responsibly and plan for the future. Capitalism has been destroyed by this government.
