Electrical /sprinkler system help?

Sep 25, 2022, 10:06 AM

Cable guys cut all the wires in my irrigation system and connected them wrong. Repair guy says components in zones were shorted out and parts need to be replaced. He also made the comment that the wires might have also been shorted out and need replacement - is that possible? I figured a wire will still work if it is still connected to both ends. What am I missing?

Check fuse in control box first. Low voltage usually do not short out due to being cut

He replaced the control box already. He also says they hooked the ground wire to zone wire and voltage to valves tripled to cause the short. But is it possible that the wires themselves would need to be replaced?

If they truly spliced every cut then the worst

That could happen would be the zones may be mixed up. My guess would be they cut at more than one spot and haven't repaired completely

doesn't sound right

first, how do you connect them wrong? The colors are the same. He might have switched zones on you but that wouldn't change the voltage.

Low voltage circuits are DC if they are wired backwards, they just don't work. There is no current so the wires are not damaged.

Finally there is a fuse or breaker that trips at a certain amperage. Wire size is based on amperage (current)

See my 2nd post above - ground wire to

a zone wire. Check at control box showed triple the ohms(80?) on some zones according to guy who was looking for problem.

Cut off water
Unscrew valve solenoid and disconnect wires in valve box
Turn control box on to run first zone
Connect one wire to ground and one to zone 1 from the solenoid that you have in your hand
If it vibrates then do this with each zone in control box
If it vibrates going through each zone then they didn’t rewire it correctly and you will need to find where they cut it and fix
