Scouting Louisville (Long-ish)

Sep 23, 2016, 9:47 AM

So I rewatched Louisville's games and went play by play, drive by drive. Some key take aways (with my live notes from the FSU game since they are by far the best opponent they have played so far at the bottom of the thread).

1. Jackson's ability on the zone read

-Jackson torched the FSU defense on one main play in the run game. The FSU DEs crashed consistently, allowing Jackson to pull the ball and run with it.
-FSU rarely had a linebacker or corner behind the crashing DE close enough to make a play on him. -119 Yards rushing against Charlotte, 199 against Syracuse, and 146 against FSU.
-HERE IS THE KICKER, of his 464 rushing yards, 266 of those came in the 1st quarter (7/10 rushing TDs in the 1st quarter as well).

2. Louisville Special teams are terrible

-Y'all think ours were an issue last year? LOU was worse (for the entire season). LOU's kicker is not accurate (2/4 with a long of 41 this year, 15/21 last year). If we can make them kick FGs of 40 yards+ we are good to go (including last year their kicker is only 3/7 from kicks beyond 40 yards).

3. Jackson's inconsistency in the pocket

-As good as Jackson has started this season, he's only completing 61% of his passes this season (with a schedule including Charlotte and at Syracuse.....). Against Syracuse, he was 20/39 (51.3%). When has been the most effective passing the ball? 2nd quarter, his yards and completion % are highest so far in the 2nd quarter (465 yards (more than half of his season total), 5 of his 8 TD passes).

4. Defensive Inconsistency

-In their only road game of the year at Syracuse, their defense gave up 414 yards of offense and 24 first downs. They scored 28 points in the first quarter, but Syracuse attacked the edges and moved the ball and was only down 42-28 going into the 4th quarter.

5. Penalties

-5 for 56 yards against FSU, 9 for 100 against Syracuse. These will play a factor next weekend.

6. Turnovers

-7 on the season, 3 @Syracuse.

HOW DO YOU STOP THEM?

1. Keep Jackson in the pocket
-again, 20/39 against Syracuse because Syracuse did their best to keep him in the pocket. When he got out of the pocket was the issue.

2. Attack the edges
-With out O-line not playing as well as they should be (more so the right side than the left), the plays have still been there on the edges so far this year. This will continue next weekend.

3. Tony Elliott/Jeff Scott STICKING with the working plays
-The most frustrating thing I've seen so far this season is abandoning the play calling that is working in favor of attempting deep balls. The occasional deep ball attempt is good, but we have thrown far to many and are not clicking consistently with it yet (the biggest criticism of Deshaun so far this season). Shorter passes are a must because we need Deshaun to get in rhythm consistently.

4. Coach Venables doing what he does
-By far the most under rated coordinator in college football today, just keep doing what you do Coach V!

5. Sean Pollard, Tremayne Anchrum, and John Simpson the X factors?
-Everyone is going to about our QB/RBs/WRs/TEs, but I think the X factors in this game are going to be the O-Line. With Fruhmorgen, Hearn, and even Hyatt at times having issues, will we see more of these 3? Pollard came in the game last night after Fruhmorgen kept having issues and played fairly well. I wouldn't be surprised to see these 3 get more playing time, especially if we continue to have issues on the O line.

Not making any predictions yet for next weekend but I'll be watching Louisville/Marshall just to see if they are focused or looking ahead. Could reveal some more info for our coaches.

SPOT THE DA## BALL!

FSU/Louisville Live Game Notes

• 1st 2 scoring drives, FSU busted coverages gave big gains of 30+ yards to Louisville.
• Louisville kicker’s leg is not consistently strong enough to put the ball into the end zone on kickoffs.
• FSU attacked the edges and boundaries after running pick plays in the middle of the field
• Louisville was very aggressive with their linebackers on 2nd downs
• FSU missed a 1st quarter FG
• FSU had some stupid 1st quarter penalties when they had Louisville stopped/backed up
• Jackson’s effectiveness running the ball is on the zone read
• FSU was effective when the d line got pressure and kept Johnson in the pocket
• Cover 2 was very effective when Louisville was behind the chains (forced Jackson to have to read the defense and make decisions from the pocket)
• Louisville missed a FG @ 13:28 left in 2nd quarter
• FSU had a chop block penalty after driving into the red zone after a huge play
• Game was 14-10 with 10:56 left in the 2nd quarter
• Jackson again ate the FSU defense up on the edge with the zone read
• Louisville hit a big slant against zone defense (hole in zone in middle of the field)
• Jackson again on the zone read (misread and still made the end miss, he’s quick off this play)
• Louisville is not as explosive or deadly when Jackson doesn’t have the ball in his hands, he changes the game with his running ability
• Louisville special teams is not crisp
• FSU turnover giving Louisville the ball in the red zone right after Louisville go up 21-10
• Louisville false start (#17)
• Jackson zone read big play again
• FSU busted a coverage on 3rd and goal to give up an easy TD for Louisville, 28-10
• FSU has been able to move the ball and convert 3rd downs
• FSU has spent a lot of time on Louisville side of the field but is not executing consistently on the Louisville side
• FSU took a big sack on 3rd down, QB saw the pressure but did not audible or call a time out to adjust, cost them
• FSU missed a key tackle that gave Louisville a big play to the 5-yard line, good position on the defense, lucky bounce for Louisville
• Wiggins injured (Louisville top cover corner was injured)
• FSU almost threw a pick on 3rd down on first possession after halftime, had to punt
• Louisville ran punt back for a touchdown to make it 42-10
o Killed the will on the FSU team at this point after the 3 and out on the next drive
• Louisville fumbled but the refs ruled him down, another Louisville break
• Louisville exploited the middle of the field by calling plays that moved the linebackers out of the throwing lanes
• Louisville did not convert many 3rd downs that were 3rd and long
• Louisville had another fumble but the ball carrier’s knee was down (barely)
• FSU defense had a personal foul (hands to the face) on the defensive line on a 3rd down for Louisville
• FSU struggled to set the edge all day (consistent problem)
• FSU wasn’t set on play that Louisville scored to go up 49-10
• Louisville got lucky with no pass interference
• Louisville blitzed A LOT
• FSU picked off a pass that was a terrible decision (again, make him stay in the pocket)
• FSU Offensive line could not block all day

Thanks for the run down. I haven't seen them play this year

Sep 23, 2016, 9:59 AM

and enjoyed catching up on what to expect. If the kicker is as bad as you say he is, I would expect Louisville to go for it on 4th down instead of trying to kick any long field goals.

I actually heard about their kicker from their fans before..

Sep 23, 2016, 10:05 AM

even watching the games. Going back and watching confirmed this. For once I'm actually confident in our special teams going into next weekend.

I watched the FSU game and point 1. Can't be overstated. Zone reads are by far the most explosive and effective play they run. We must take that away. Also FSU's DL as a whole didn't play nearly as well as I though they would. Let's put Lamar in the middle of 80,000 screaming fans and see if that offense hums as well as it did in Louisville at noon.

Saying UofL's special teams are weak is a new slant on a team who returned one punt for a 69 yard touchdown and then another, soon after, 61 yards before the returner cramped up. UofL's kickoffs are designed to be fielded and defended. There were certainly ample opportunities to see if they were up to snuff or not with 10 or so kickoffs to use as a rule of thumb. Please name one failure in all those kickoffs.

Louisville's 1's have not been asked to play a full game yet. Naturally, Jackson's crazy stats favor the first or second quarter, lol. That's basically all he has played. His third quarter stats are not bad either, for that matter, in the games he lasted until then. He scored on a 57 yard run on FSU in the third.

The FG kicker is new. He may or may not be all that. He does have some leg and he is leading the country in EP's, lol, so he passes the basic test so far. He will rarely get called on in an offense as prolific as ours has been so far. Petrino does not mind going for short yardage on 4th downs.

Do you actually think you are going to run through the season scoring 60 a game?
No way a team can keep that pace up all year long.
You are going to need some FGs OCT 1st.
Clemson is way better than FSU and you little birds have your hopes way too high.
The Tigers are not just going to hand you their spot in the pecking order.

When not kicking the ball into the end zone, y'all are giving up 24 yards average on kick returns. Not great but not bad either. Your kicker is garbage who missed FGs at home against FSU and has made less than 50% of his kicks over 40 yards. Do you really think he's going to be better on the road?

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So Jackson didn't score a TD in the 4th against FSU???

News to me

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson

Here's my take....

Sep 23, 2016, 6:54 PM

Defense

1. Stack the box, take away the run game, force them into passing.

2. Get pressure with Interior D Linemen, force rushed passes. Rattle Jackson, don't give him time.

3. Get a spy on him, much like we did vs Ohio State. But disguise the spy from play to play.

Offense

1. Time to open the playbook.

2. Attack the perimeter, our skill is better than theirs.

3. Time to turn up the tempo, don't let them sub.

4. Get Jordan Leggett the ball. If they scheme to take him out, then it's going to open up for either Williams or Cain.

and DW has to make the long throws. He hasn't so far this year. He makes some of those, and its off to the races.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Excellent!

Sep 24, 2016, 5:31 AM

Under "How do we beat them", points 3 and 5 are exactly right!

Point 3: Maybe we've seen much better underneath coverage, which calls for long balls - but if so, it means that our O-line is getting eaten up by the opponent's front 4, because the pocket seems to be collapsing way too early - not good. There have been many missed long ball opportunities and we've thrown way too many, given the incompletions. This could be an accuracy problem on Watson or a timing problem caused by receivers. So far, it has looked like an accuracy problem to me. Whatever the cause, the long ball incompletions are drive stoppers. If they're designed to loosen up the box for the run game, it doesn't seem to be working.

Point 5: We seem to be caught in the same circumstances on offense we were in 2 years ago - better pass blocking than run blocking. But - the pass blocking is not as good as it was then and the run blocking is almost non-existent. No push, no seal and no kick out.... so, no hole.

I think the biggest need on offense is for the O-line to get right. We're better than what they've shown so far.

On D, I have no concerns as long as the DEs can bottle up Jackson and take away the edge - the LBs and Safeties can handle the dive and inside keeper cut on the zone read.

Re: Scouting Louisville (Long-ish)

Sep 24, 2016, 10:53 AM

Brent Venables defense after 4 complete games has only gave up 44 total points, with an average of 11 points a game. My faith is with Brent Venables defense giving our offense an excellent chance to win the game against the Red birds. In BV I trust!!!

Sep 24, 2016, 11:13 AM

Easy said than done, but it's why Bill Belicheck has 6 Super Bowl rings. Take away the one thing they do well on offense. Obviously, Jackson can run like a deer. Gotta contain him. It's that simple.
