TNET: More details emerge on Playoff expansion proposal

More details emerge on Playoff expansion proposal

A number of outlets Thursday confirmed a Yahoo report from earlier this week that said a College Football Playoff committee is favoring an expansion to 12 teams. Per ESPN, it would call for the six highest-ranked conference champions and six at-large bids. Per the same report, the 10 FBS conference Read Update »

This proposal, as stated, will never be enacted.

Two statements in the post:

*********
Per the same report, the 10 FBS conference commissioners and Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick will have to agree on the format when they next week. The committee submitting the proposal has been meeting the past two years to talk about possible expansion.

An interesting caveat in the proposal is that the top-4 conference champions would get a bye -- thus excluding a top-4-ranked potential independent such as Notre Dame in 2018 and 2020.
**********

No way will Notre Dame agree to that.

A 12-0 ND team doesn't get a bye when a bunch of one loss conference champ does?

FWIW, Swarbrick was one of four members of the working group to present the recommendation today.

Notre Dame needs to join a conference in football.

If they elect not to do, so be it, but the ongoing habit of giving the Bee Bee Heads special consideration or treatment needs to stop.

I agree 100 percent. Why on earth does the NCAA, as worthless an organization as can be, give special status to one school???

Jun 10, 2021, 4:09 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: More details emerge on Playoff expansion proposal ]

I don't think people or teams or coaches really care about bye's, though. I used to think they mattered, but honestly I'm surprised how many people are bringing up bye's for this one playoff scenario alone.

For example, Notre Dame plays 8 bye-week opponents this season. Nobody cares or complains, not even Notre Dame, FWIW.
If they don't "get" a bye before the CFP, they still seem to have one most seasons during conference championship weekend by nature, know what I mean?

2 Different things

Jun 10, 2021, 4:13 PM

Having a bye before a game may be a (minor at times) advantage, but playing 1 less game against top 12 level talent is a MAJOR advantage.

Jun 10, 2021, 4:29 PM

I hear you. I am just kinda surprised how many people are so vocal about it by comparison, know what I mean? 8 bye opponents vs 0 for a top-4 opponent and it's crickets, but 1 possible bye for top-12 and it just seems disproportionate. Hope that makes more sense anyway, but I do agree with you that an entire game less vs. a top team is different, for sure.

Notre Dame keeps the full share of money for each CFP game they compete in. In actuality they probably do not want the bye. The CFP cut them a check for over $11 million to lose 1 game badly in 2018-19. They don’t want to pass up that kind of money.

the six "highest-ranked conference champions" along with six at-large bids.

I still think the Power 5 conference champions should be automatic qualifiers whether in the highest ranked conference champion category or via one of the at-large bids.

I also think strength of schedule has to be a consideration.

Any limits to the number of teams from a conference? I'd hate to see ESPN try to jam 4 $EC teams in every year.

I just think 12 teams are too many. Are there ever really 12 teams capable of winning it all? Also, fans will find it difficult to go to 3 games. We’ve been to every playoff game Clemson has been in and it gets very expensive.

Could be 4 playoff games if one of teams 5-12 make the final. Thankfully, that is pretty unlikely to happen.

Jun 10, 2021, 7:17 PM

I was disappointed when Swofford went for the partial affiliation horsecrap. I hope and pray they move to the Big 10 or some damm place. They are and always have been arrogant and selfish. I think the Big 10 would be their most natural fit. It sure as haul isn't the ACC.

don't see how ND can argue anything - doesn't not having to

play a conference championship game equal a bye? join a conference or deal with it domers.

Re: don't see how ND can argue anything - doesn't not having to

Jun 10, 2021, 8:32 PM

I didn't see them saying that, but is that what they're saying?

They have more bye-week opponents this year than any other (the NCAA maximum) so I'm not sure what the proper balance will be, but I imagine it has to come up next week in the new round of talks, and also for other independents as well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

have no idea what you're talking about - I saying 12 games

Jun 10, 2021, 9:05 PM

vs 13 with conf. champ game ---- get it?

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Right, but then it would immediately be equal the next game

Jun 10, 2021, 10:52 PM

That's the essence of the other teams' bye; ND would be playing a playoff game vs a top-12 team while we're on a bye, for example, equaling 13.

But we've had discrepancies in the past, too, including in the playoffs. Don't forget, the BIG12 only added a conference championship game 3 years ago, & it's a guaranteed rematch by nature).

be perfect, or satisfy everyone, but for the sake of the integrity of the sport, the goal should be to determine a champion by as objective of a process as possible. All polls and associated rankings based off of polls are NOT objective (such as "strength of schedule"), but are highly subjective at best, and almost certainly reflect extreme bias, and likely a corrupt agenda. Personally I think the playoff should only include conference or division champions. Conference championships could, in effect, be part of the playoff, or do away with conference championships, and let division champions play division champs from other conferences, because once you lose your conference championship, it should count as being knocked out of the playoff. Reward winning, penalize losing. Don't let the new playoff become stacked with teams from one conference so that it becomes "The SEC Show" every year, because without some strict limitations, that is exactly what will happen. The "strength of schedule" argument will be used non-stop at the end of the season to get as many SEC teams in as possible - just wait.

Agreed.

I'd love to be able to play ND every year. Last year alone was proof of how impactful a matchup with them can be.

Re: TNET: More details emerge on Playoff expansion proposal

Jun 11, 2021, 6:52 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: More details emerge on Playoff expansion proposal ]

Maybe not.

1. Under this system they will make the playoffs more often than not.

2. They don’t have to share revenue with a conference.

3. They don’t have to play a conference championship game, so they do, in effect, get a bye.

4. Looking back over the last few years, Notre Dame would have opened the playoffs at home against fairly weak opponents.

The proposed system actually looks VERY GOOD for Notre Dame. The only time it would suck for them would be, let’s say in a year they go undefeated and beat Clemson and Southern Cal. Yet Clemson and USC could win their conferences and get a bye over a number 1 ranked, undefeated Notre Dame. That rare occurrence would look bad, but that is a 1:100 long shot.

Scheduling Implications and Student Athlete Health

Jun 11, 2021, 1:55 PM

With a 12-team playoff there will be a possibility that 2 teams will play 16 games in 1 season. Let's say Clemson gets in as a 7 seed. They'd have to play in that first round of 5-12 seeds, then they'd play in the semi and finally the championship game. That would be 12 regular season games, 1 ACCCG and 3 playoff games.

Our typical regular season schedule goes like this: 8 conference games, 2 OOC legit games (like USC and UGA this season) and 2 OOC creampuff games. And, yes, I realize USC is considered a creampuff game for us as well.

Is it fair to have college kids potentially play an NFL-like 16 games? If not, what gives? We won't be able to drop any of our 8 conference games. And there is no way in this world that we'd ever stop playing USC. So do we drop our "Good" OOC opponent like UGA or LSU or Auburn? Probably not. That would mean we'd likely need to drop one of our home games against whichever victim agreed to play us from the Sun Belt or AAC. How does that impact season ticket prices? What is the impact to revenue?

There are only 2 options here: 1) Just roll with it and have 2 teams play 16 game seasons. 2) Everyone drop 1 regular season game.

I'm betting on option 1. The NCAA doesn't care at all about the health of student athletes.

Anyone else see some realistic options that I missed?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just call it the SEC Invitational.

Jun 11, 2021, 4:42 PM

That is what they are trying to set up.

How about making the entire regular season and conference championships part of the playoffs, and let everyone in. 8 conference champions only. That way you only get to argue about who are the 2 worst group of 5 champions. The only bias allowed will be in seeding.
