Saw a recruit mentioning the education Clemson offers

Jun 1, 2016, 12:00 PM

and made me think...

I wonder if Clemson has ever thought about developing a program/major that would be well suited for the high profile image that being a athletic star gives to students, even if they don't go pro in their sport? Something like a combination of journalism, sales and marketing, non-profit management, and public speaking, with a side of financial management if they do make it big so they can better manage their wealth versus being vulnerable to agents and friends or family.

I would think any starter on the football, basketball, or baseball teams would have a great opportunity at bringing in business for any company in SC that could use their "stardom" to attract new clients or customers or get a foot in the door places they might normally get with a lower-profile employee. By the time the sports reputation began to wear off, they might have already built a good career for themselves and become great examples for new student athletes and future recruits (and their parents).

I've never understood why schools don't offer sports majors

Jun 1, 2016, 12:38 PM

and no I don't mean majoring in football, but more in the "business of sports." Some combination of sports law/representational/financial/marketing/business/data analysis etc. It could actually be a very rigorous course load. It would fit in nicely in a business school or some other professional track like pre-law etc.

A graduate would be qualified to either
1) not get screwed if they actually become a professional ball player
or
2) work on the business side of sports either for a team, agent (get a law degree and you'd have super credentials), scout, reporter/analyst

Geville Tiger on Clemson football , "Dabo's only problem is he has to deal with turd fans questioning every move he makes.”

SCar offers a sports management degree.

Don't know what kind of classes it involves, but it might be something similar to what you are talking about. But I agree, sports is a huge business, it would make sense for more schools to have something to feed students into that industry.

Hate to give them props

just looked it up. Part of their hospitality college.

"The University of South Carolina is the first major University to create a separate department for the study of sport and entertainment with a solid business curriculum."

Their description sounds more like its geared toward the fan entertainment side of sports and running a venue (makes sense given the focus of the college its under). But it does sound like it has the potential to be what I was talking about.

No offense, but not every football athlete has the IQ to even pass the curriculum on their own. That type of major would require them to pass a couple calculus classes.

They don't HAVE to be in a sports major

Jun 1, 2016, 1:38 PM

but it could certainly be an option for those that want to go into the business of sports or even a coach.

and the vast majority of athletes do have the IQ to use the scholarship to plan for their future beyond their playing days.

Clemson offers an Athletic Leadership minor. I also took sports law in my last semester, with TDP as the professor. It could be kind of dry at times but he had great guests (Drad, Dabos agent, and others) for the class and some cool insight.

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

Clemson offers just about everything you mentioned...

Jun 1, 2016, 1:21 PM

although the names of the courses may not be exactly what you suggested. Ultimately however, it is up to the student athletes to choose what they want to study. Cliff Hammond, a great basketball player here, majored in architecture....a very difficult curriculum. You can put it all out before them, and we probably do, but at the end of the day they have to choose their own career path....and are responsible for their own career path.
