Re: ... without FL or GA recruits?

May 14, 2014, 2:56 PM

In the past, Clemson has done a great job of identifying the kids in Georgia who could play, but who were overlooked by UGA, guys like Homer Jordan and Terry Allen, etc. ... and to a lesser degree, we were able get some good ones out of Florida who were passed on by UF, FSU and Miami like Kenny Flowers, Terrance Flagler, DeAndre McDaniels, and others.

What's been different these past few years is that now we are taking the VERY BEST players like Deshaun Watson and Mitch Hyatt from Georgia and like CJ, Sammy, Tony Steward, and MacKenzie Alexander out of Florida on a fairly routine basis. We've even gotten back into North Carolina to snag the top guys like Stephone Anthony.

It's fortunate, because while we've been doing that, SCAR has been mopping up on the highest-rated Palmetto State players most years recently.

If we continue to recruit the other states this well and manage to get back on top in South Carolina, the sky is literally the limit.

The difference in Clemson and South Carolina in state recruiting the last few years has been two players Latimore and Clowney. Without those two Clemson would be way ahead in state and until last season we were landing more quality players in state every season.

I'd add Stephon Gilmore and Alshon Jeffery to that list ...

... of in state difference-makers along with Clowney and Lattimore.

That, plus some great ones have left the state during that period to play elsewhere.

Its not as if UGa hasn't recruited heavily in SC as well....

May 14, 2014, 3:11 PM

I can remember as far back as legendary Baltimore Colt WR Jimmy Orr leaving Seneca for UGa....the dawgs have always done well in SC even recently taking the #1 player in SC from the Lowcountry. The close proximity of the three schools (Clemson, UGa, usuck) means they all recruit in each other's backyards so I don't really find it surprising to find out of state talent on any of their rosters.

But what Clemson has done (in terms of recruiting) in the state of Fla in the last 10 or 12 years is nothing short of remarkable--headlined by CJ Spiller and Sammmy Watkins--arguably the two best at their respective positions ever to wear the paw.

Do state lines mean that much, now or before?

May 14, 2014, 3:32 PM

Maybe I see it a little differently because I've always had my family spread between GA, SC, and FL, but even when I was at Clemson I had close family that were UGA and FSU/UF fans. One was even a SCar fan (even before they joined the SEC). He was a little 'tetched' in the head as my grandfather would say.

And the proximity is probably a factor like some say. If you were to draw a fair size circle (350 mile radius?) you can probably capture Bama (?), Auburn, Clemson, UGA, SCar, FSU, UF. Those were the popular football colleges in my circle of friends and family growing up in GA and SC. And probably more nowadays than before, careers mean families move around a good bit in that 350 mile circle, too.

Throw in scholarships taking tuition out of the equation for players, and it isn't all that surprising to me that we can recruit well from NC down to FL. Catching a good tackle from Brooklyn, not that is different!

I think TV exposure and ease of travel has brought down some of the barriers but it is still difficult to group up in a state and not naturally become a fan of a local school. I do agree with you that compared to even recruiting in the 80s state borders are far less important but if a player grew up a UGA fan it can be difficult to sway them.

Isn't it amazing all the posts in this thread have mentioned

a lot of schools within a relatively easy drive from Atlanta----except one.....and its in downtown Atlanta. I think its more than fair to say the wramblin'wreck's football presence in the Southeast has taken a downturn of late

Clemson and South Carolina have no choice but to

recruit heavily outside our state, given its size and limited select number of top recruits.

Fortunately, both schools do pretty well with in state talent; however, each has to have inroads elsewhere.

My thinking is that the recent success of both programs has attracted more attention to both from top recruits. Then, it boils down to each athlete's selection. That serves both programs well.

young men would be or have been without fine universities such as clemson, top 10 apr, et al.

http://www.footballstudyhall.com/2013/9/11/4718442/college-football-state-texas-california-florida

to me, it doesn't matter "who" dons the orange, purple & white as i'll continue to support them in their endeavors to represent clemson on their particular fields of play.

back to the basics, lbbill.

There are not enough top line recruits in SC to fill a top ten recruiting class for Clemson...much less Clemson and South Carolina both.

It hasn't been that long ago that schools from GA, TN, FL, and AL got SC's best players. Remember how we hated to see SC guys on those teams and they would beat SC teams with our guys??? I'm still pissed that Stanley Morgan (QB-Easley HS) went to TN, and his reception beat CLEMSON. And the ol' farts on here might remember that too. Youngun's will have to Google it.

Those are all pipelines to Clemson now, would you ever think you would say that? When kids from Florida call Clemson their dream school, you know some things have changed.
