Sammy Watkins vs Julio Jones

I'm hearing a lot of talk about Sammy's upside and a lot of the experts are throwing out Julio Jones as comparable player. That's a fine comparison in terms of skill set and hair -- but mostly hair.
I looked at some Alabama highlights of Julio and they do have similar qualities in terms of size, lateral quickness, and physicality. The biggest difference, and what gives Sammy more upside is simple -- speed. Both top end and lateral. The kind of speed (half a second faster in the 40 than Jones) that separates a super fast player and a freak. Sammy is the latter.
I heard throughout Sammy's career how he was the second best receiver in the nation behind Marquise Lee of USC. That was the consensus until Sammy's draft eligibility crept up last year and the experts started actually watching film. From there, Sammy was regarded as the best WR in the draft and maybe the best receiver since AJ Green.
I still hear the occasional JJ comparisons along with some criticism of Buffalo for trading up to get Sammy. Nothing against JJ, he's a good NFL player, but anyone that watched Sammy at Clemson knows how special he is. Hopefully EJ Manuel can get Sammy the #### ball so everyone can figure it out too. Until then, we'll get evaluations of Sammy that are more in line with his hair style than his actual ability.

Pretty sure Jones official 40 was faster than sammys. What makes sammy different is he is just a play maker. Jones is a freak but will never get the most out of his talent. Sammy is more fluid and natural

Jones is a playmaker as well. Kalon Davis could be a playmaker if he ran a 4.39. The speed, particularly in small bursts, sets Sammy apart. Completely agree with you on the fluidity though--No wasted motion when Sammy runs.

convince me that a football player who runs a 4.34 at the combine necessarily has any real advantage over one who runs a 4.39 (or a 4.0 or a 4.1 or 4.2 or anything close). If they run the next day, or next month, or on a different surface, or wearing a helmet and shoulder pads, the times may be quite different.

Yes i agree, 40 times can be a bit arbitrary.
Never mention 40 times -- lesson learned. Throws off the entire focus of your post.
Has anyone else noticed the comparisons to JJ or have any insights on Sammy's NFL outlook?

many players I've watched over the years get up to speed as quickly as he does.

Anything near Sammy is a catch. JJ has had a tendency in college and the pros of dropping balls.
