Sanford Stadium - rich can buy alcohol, poor to do without

Jun 3, 2019, 7:25 AM

Georgia will allow limited alcohol sales this fall at Sanford Stadium, but the new change will only be available to a very select group of fans.

Athletic Director Greg McGarity told DawgNation on Wednesday that the university will sell beer and wine in a specific spot in the stadium's club level. Members of the university's Magill Society, who donate $25,000 to UGA's athletic association over five years, will be able to purchase alcohol in the premium seating area, which has controlled access. Fans in general seating areas will not have the opportunity to purchase any alcohol.

McGarity said the school is offering the new alcohol sales as "a benefit to our donors." Despite their large financial contributions, Magill members will have to consume their drinks in a specific area without a view of the field. UGA has not said how much it will charge for the new beer and wine sales.

SEC leaders are expected to discuss alcohol sales at the SEC Spring Meetings in Destin, Fla., this week. Fifty-five FBS programs sell alcohol throughout their stadiums, but the SEC only allows alcohol to be served in controlled, private areas. Other universities in the conference also have offered alcohol in controlled areas to donors, and UGA has made it available without charge in the stadium's privately owned SkySuites and its East End Club.

Wow! What a slap in the face to the majority of their supporters.

I do not understand why selling alcohol is shunned across most of college football. I can tell you from experience that college kids get way more rowdy at their tailgates than they would buying $10 beers at a game while using a fake I’d to do so. It would generate revenue immediately and offer incentives for post grads to enjoy a beer at the game bolstering in fan experience. I really don’t get it.

Could be liability concerns, expenses far more than just COGS...

time, fake IDs in a college environment, just because some choose to get lubricated before a game, doesn't mean the University has to take part in it while they are inside the stadium, not saying I agree or disagree, but there are plenty of reasonable considerations against. And that's just the tip.

there are reasonable arguments against but...

Clemson has alcohol in the club suites as well

Jun 3, 2019, 7:43 AM

And the club level in basketball.

It’s obvious that we can’t trust the poors with alcohol in the stadium.

Jun 3, 2019, 8:57 AM

If you want alcohol in the stadium you need to shell out outrageous $$$ first...duh.

Seriously though. If they were to sell in DV the cost would be prohibitive and I probably wouldn’t buy any anyway. They’d probably sell beers for $10.

The upper WEZ can bring in and imbibe during games

Jun 3, 2019, 7:48 AM

assuming they bring it in the day before and store it in their locker

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Same with all the suites.***

Hmm, seems that would open a can of worms that they wouldn't want to open. Sure to be lawsuits(there always are), this will really pis s of mid level donors who won't be allowed to buy alcohol(but sneak it in anyway). Just not a well thought out "benefit", that again separates the university into a caste system. My guess is this won't last long.

You have to rely on alcohol to support your team ... you don’t have much of a team!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is really strange to me.. don't those donors already

Jun 3, 2019, 9:49 AM

Have liquor lockers?

The high level donors don't seem like the beer drinking demographic. I guess their wives can have chilled rose. How nice.

And for $50,000 donors can smoke crack on the sideline

Jun 3, 2019, 12:13 PM

For $100,000 donors can streak the field during timeouts.
