Running Watson is NOT the problem

Nov 17, 2014, 8:22 AM

Pounding an injured Watson between the tackles multiple times in 1 quarter is. We need Watson to be a running threat but we dont need to use him like we did Boyd who was built like a fullback. QBs like Boyd and Tebow are built to run inside. QBs like Watson, Marshall, Mariota are built to run to the outside. So no running him is not the issue, how we are running him is.

Agreed on your statement.I thought at the time they were running Watson to much, especially to be his first series back. Appeared there were more calls for Watson to run than Gallman. Also Watson took several hard hits on runs...why did Morris just keep running him. True that Watson is gifted and a playmaker...but why put your main playmaker at risk so daggum often. In my opinion, it lost Clemson the game.

Marshall and Mariotta run the same zone read we do

Nov 17, 2014, 8:53 AM

and his injury did not involve a hit.

but he injured it on a RUN making a cut. What's your point?

His point is that he could've injured it on a roll out or a drop back to pass just as easily as he did on a non contact run play. So sick of people saying we shouldn't run watson. He was/is the number 1 dual threat qb in the nation. What is so hard to understand about this.

It's not about not running Watson, it's about not running him so freaking much during his first quarter back when he clearly is capable of throwing the ball.

He might have injured it getting up from breakfast or while helping an elderly lady across the street.
We run our qb , just like about 40% of college offenses do now ...with that number ever increasing. It is a shame that he went down with a freak knee injury but it is likely to happen in football when you run with it.
I say , if he isn't running it we have very little dimension to our offense. Watson has to run , it is what makes our offense tough to defend.

DB23

Theres a difference in running it inside and outside

Nov 17, 2014, 9:23 AM

DW is not built to run inside, especially behind a $***ty oline

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Im clearly not talking about the zone read

Nov 17, 2014, 9:06 AM [ in reply to Marshall and Mariotta run the same zone read we do ]

Im talking about the draws and QB isos bt the tackles. No he didnt get hurt on one of those plays but the fact remains a small framed QB should not be pounding it out bt the tackles... he needs to take it to the outside where his speed and elusiveness comes into play.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So basically , don't run the offense. QB draw and zone read

Nov 17, 2014, 9:10 AM

a huge part of what all these QB's do. We weren't running 3rd and short iso's like we did with Tajh, we were running our base offense

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

With a banged up Oline, **** no

Nov 17, 2014, 9:15 AM

If we had some earth movers that could open holes to allow him to get to the 2nd level on those type runs, ok. But the weak fattys we got up front will get our RBs killed much less our small framed QB. I trust Hump blocking a DB more than I do (Insert every oline here) blocking a dlineman.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So true not gonna be able to pound him like that!

Re: Running Watson is NOT the problem

Nov 17, 2014, 9:06 AM

Yeah you don't run a guy (particularly a QB of Watson passing talent and build) who's been inactive for a month that often his first game back particularly between the tackles. Ease the guy in. After the 2nd drive, I was screaming for Chad to stop with the QB runs and zones reads. Of course the next series he goes down. I also think it was no coincidence that Gurley who has a much sturdier build than Watson was inactive for a month, carried the ball nearly 30 times, and then blew out his knee. I don't think knees are built anymore to handle heavy active, relative inactivity for an extended period of time, and then immediately going back to a heavy workload. I'm no doctor, but that common sense. You can't simulate game day running in practice. These coaches just don't know how to take care of their players. I fully blame Morris.

Re: Running Watson is NOT the problem

Nov 17, 2014, 9:11 AM

My whole thing with running the QB is that I understand that it's a part of our offense, but only to the extent that Watson can't just drop back and pass all over GT's defense.

He's a good passing QB who can run the option. Not the other way around.
