Running Game Decline

I watched the ‘18 championship game vs Alabama last night and the one thing that struck me more than anything was that we actually could run the ball. Very well in fact! What on earth happened in such a short period of time?

the linebackers and forcing coverage. Last year.. i didn't think we had much of a go-to Wide Receiver. Cornell Powell came out of no where mid way through the season to be that guy but that was primarily by default b/c no one else could take control. I just think opposing teams were more at liberty to stop our run game than in 2018.

drive when the game was already decided at 44-16.

In fact we only had 27 yards rushing about halfway through the 3rd quarter.

Etienne did have a good TD run in the first quarter to make it 14-7 and another two good runs from the 6 early to make it 21-16.

The most effectiveness running the ball against Bama in our 4 playoff appearances against them was Watson scrambling in 2015.

Combo WR and OL. Not enough WR to spread out D and OL was horrible. Worst OL in the Dabo era. Good news though. We will see a big difference this season. More depth and talent on OL. Plus fingers crossed we get Ross back.
