Roster Management

Dec 13, 2021, 11:22 AM

Just reading DHood's piece from Sunday on attrition & roster management, and he says we expect 26 open scholarships for '22, thanks in part to 9 portal transfers. Also, Coach Swinney expects 12-14 signees in this class.

Now, if my Jethro Bodine mathematics are correct, that means we were short between 3-5 players even if there wasn't a single portal transfer (which would be pretty optimistic thinking, considering the state of college football today.)

My question is, how did we wind up so short in the '22 class? We'd be in an even deeper hole if we had more transfers, like Alabama (11) or Georgia (13).

I know we've historically been a really selective program with very few offers going out, but surely there are 3 or 4 'bubble' guys we could take, to see how they develop?

I haven't read the article yet, but did Dabo say he expects to sign 12-14 on Wednesday?

If so, he could still be planning to recruit and sign more players between now and February when the second signing day rolls around.

We don't need 100.

We just need the combination of high school signees and transfers in to equal roughly 8-9.

Each quality high school guy that can be added puts a dent in how much you have to rely on finding the right guys in the portal and vice versa.

TCI has an excellent tracker of scholarship players. It says we are at 70 as of today. We have a RB and DT expected to commit which would put us at 72 so we need 13 more to be at a full roster going into fall camp. this 13 could come from the late signing period or portal.

The thing which is unnerving for me is we have not expanded our offer list once guys hit the portal. I am hoping our media (calling david hood) will ask Dabo about the plan to fill the 13 open spots on Wednesday when he has his signing day presser.

Curious as to where that list stands with guys like KJ Henry or BT Potter.

Also with guys like Andrew Booth who could be leaving early.

It's odd to not only have draft pick decisions but also seniors who are able to decide whether they intend to return or not.

The list he's referencing includes the guys you mentioned as still being on roster. Therefore, it's a safe bet that we'll need more. I believe it includes Galloway as well and we already know he's announced he's gone.

Keep in Mind... Dabo almost never signs

up to 85. He typically leaves 2-3 spots open.

This has always been just about my only pet peeves, especially when it's come to O Line as it's traditionally been the weakest perceived unit on our team year in and year out.

A few weeks back Dabo mentioned signing 17, but that was before the IMG exodus

prior years everywhere. With many more transfer portal kids about it seems like more HS'ers may step back and survey the field more this time around. With NIL now in the picture there might be more in dragging the process out and getting that holiday all-star game time and interviews.

We had 2 or 3 that we thought were “sure bets” coming out of the All In Cookout, but unfortunately they went elsewhere.
Then we lose the 3 IMG players due to BV going to Oklahoma.
Those 5 would have us in the high teens for this class, which was about where we expected.

We should not be in the spot to have take fringe recruits, but we are and were before the vacancies. It seems the recruiting season has gone somewhat like the regular season.

hope to get commits from. Then you have the decommits and that's around his target #. However his target # didn't account for the transfers. He still has to address that and there probably won't be a lot of guys that you want to tie up for 4 years available for the Feb signing period. Probably a couple. We probably will have more defections after spring ball. He'll probably have to decide how many transfers does he take vs. hold for next year(give to 1 year walkons) and the class next year would need to target around 25+ most likely - haven't looked at how many opening will be for that class but add about 7 or 8 to that # to account for additional transfers + the amount you didn't fill this year- got to be a high # next year

It will be interesting to see if and how Dabo uses the portal. I see nothing wrong with it if the player passes Dabos vetting process. Especially if we are replacing a decommit or player which transferred from us.
