Robbie Caldwell has got to go...

Nov 14, 2016, 11:56 AM

Of all the mistakes and bad officiating, the one thing that would have overcame those things is having an oline that could run block. Having to have your QB throw 70 passes (and throw in the fact he is playing with a bruised shoulder) to move the ball because the run blocking is so terrible you can only get 50 yards rushing is a recipe for a loss. 6 seasons of Caldwell and it's been terrible run blocking other than the last 1/3 of the 2015 season. Our oline men just stand around when you the ball is snapped. What makes it look even worse is that two dline men can come in and have better fundamentals blocking than our whole line. And we aren't lacking talent at oline, they were as highly rated as players at other positions, and we were predicted to have one of the best olines in the country

Criticize the play calling all you want, but an OC's job is a lot tougher when they have an oline that can't open a hole in run blocking

On a brighter note we still can get into the playoffs. Just got to correct the mistakes

our run blocking has been terrible all season...

Nov 14, 2016, 12:02 PM

injuries aren't an excuse, we have had injuries at other positions and we have other players that step up in relief. So come up with another excuse

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There was some bad for sure, but when you throw 70 times

Nov 14, 2016, 12:03 PM

and only give up one sack (maybe two), the OL is doing a lot more than standing around.

Also, throw in the fact that DW was hurt, and it was obvious in our game plan that we weren't going to have any designed QB runs. This allowed the stout Pitt DL do tee off on Gallman without the threat of DW faking on the read option and running.

simple we pass block like and NFL team and run block like pee-wees.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is true but robbie did let pitt score 43 points

Nov 14, 2016, 12:05 PM [ in reply to There was some bad for sure, but when you throw 70 times ]

So how you going to justify that?

who played tackle against Pitt. You might criticize him for not recruiting more offensive tackles and the fact that our third and fourth best tackles are 18 year olds.

Next year, we should be solid on the offensive line with more talent available to choose from.

but the guards and center isn't much better. These guys had to run block in HS. Usually pass protection is most difficult to pick up. They don't hold their blocks at all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we have plenty of talent, that excuse ain't working no more...

Nov 14, 2016, 1:58 PM [ in reply to He's only had a few months to coach the two 18 year olds ]

Youth ain't excuse either. 6 years and he has been unable to develop a solid oline. He just can't coach. There was a reason why the only places he coached before Clemson were schools who don't care about winning in football. Not too mention he was at Vanderbilt 10-15 years before he was here. Getting stuck at Vanderbilt that long doesn't speak too well for his coaching ability. And just because he gives some people a warm fuzzy feeling just because he is from South Carolina isn't an excuse either.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'll add that Caldwell is the best OL coach that we've had

Re: Robbie Caldwell has got to go...

Nov 14, 2016, 12:06 PM

We're playing two true freshmen at the OT spots because the starters are hurt and we're calling out the OL coach for not being able to coach run blocking?

I will say Taylor Hearn might could get Caldwell into a spot of difficulty since he was the one who whiffed on The Stuff On 4th-and-1 That Has Now Become Legend, but again, if your solution is to, uhm, put a third true freshman on the field in John Simpson - which Caldwell even did, on occasion - then I would speculate Caldwell is perhaps being judged a little harshly.

Sometimes injuries just catch you out. This would appear to be one of those times.

Re: Robbie Caldwell has got to go...

Nov 14, 2016, 12:10 PM

only problem with your analysis is we have not been able to run the ball efficiently all season when the starters were all healthy. Now I agree with what you said, but we lost 2 starters off the O-line -left guard and right tackle and now we can't run the ball? Of course Pitt was pretty sure Watson wasn't gonna be part of the run game. Other point -amazing how success has spoiled us!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

well how do you explain 6 years of terrible run blocking...

Nov 14, 2016, 2:04 PM [ in reply to Re: Robbie Caldwell has got to go... ]

outside the last 1/3 of 2015. So basically what you are saying we can only expect good run blocking for a third of a season every six years?

Re: Robbie Caldwell has got to go...

Nov 14, 2016, 5:46 PM [ in reply to Re: Robbie Caldwell has got to go... ]

Hearn is the problem. Just watch how he just stands around looking at the running backs being tackled. The coaches should make him stay on his man until the whistle or he needs to sit.

on here spouting sh*t you don't even understand. The O line was without its best player and they still played well. We have just started building our offensive line and we have the players now but a lot of them are young. Mitch Hyatt is an extremely rare talent, you rarely see a true freshman come in and immediately start on the offensive line.

Re: Robbie Caldwell has got to go...

Nov 14, 2016, 12:14 PM

When a team puts 8 men in the box it is normally hard to run against. It is simple math, if there are more defenders than blockers is kinda hard to run the ball.

Nov 14, 2016, 2:10 PM

the last 1/3 of 2015. And yes I will continue to beat this drum until we have an oline that can run block. 6 years of terrible run blocking there is nothing to disprove that, and the same excuses ain't gonna work on me

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe it isn't his fault?

Nov 14, 2016, 12:31 PM

some times players have to make plays. We have some young talented OL waiting in the wings too. We have some nice commits too. Sure the run blocking sucks, but maybe this just isn't our year yet. some of the best OL coaches have bad OL's that aren't that great at times.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nov 14, 2016, 12:32 PM

But in a game where you set offensive records like we just did, I can't imagine that the blame should fall on the offensive side of the team.

I've just never been impressed with Caldwell or his resume. Past time to move on. I see Olinemen run right by would-be tacklers on ruNing plays, screens, all the time!.... that's your guy, bud! Put a hat on someone! Maybe they don't want to hit anybody. I've never seen anything like it. See that defender? He's trying to tackle the guy with the ball. Maybe you should get in his way?
