RIP PAT CONROY

Mar 5, 2016, 12:40 AM

From a Beaufort native, I might not be old enough to remember his writings like the great santini and the big chill among others but he will always be one of my favorite authors even if I had to read these books a decade or two after they were released. Rest easy Mr. Conroy.

story of one of the funniest episodes in the history of football in the state of SC....Although their rivalry isn't nearly what it once was, Citadel and Furman once enjoyed a rivalry as bitter as Clemson and usuck. In the '60's, in response to previous pranks by Furman students, a group of Citadel cadets "horse-napped" the Furman mascot. These Charleston rustlers spirited the beautiful white horse off to a horse farm in Aiken owned by a relative of one of the perps to make sure it was well cared for....unfortunately, the cadets were unaware the poor horse was on medication necessary to keep it alive. It passed away quite suddenly, and after confessing, the guilty cadets soon found themselves kicked out of school and facing criminal charges and an uproar in the Greenville media

btw--"The Great Santini" remains one of my favorite movies---Duvall is masterful.

Reminds me of younger years

I grew up in the little town of Central next
to Clemson and spent a lot of time helping a
retired couple, Mr. & Mrs Kirkley. He had been
a professor in horticulture at CU and she had
worked at the Clemson House. I did yard and
garden work, painted, whatever. Plus they had
a lake house on Keowee where we did some stuff.
I got to spend a lot of time with them working,
eating, and talking. They had some great stories
of the old days at Clemson.

Anyway, the last thing he gave me was a copy of
Pat Conroy's "The Prince of Tides" in 1990 which
i still have. He passed away in early '91. Still
think about "Kirk" a lot. Old folks rock; he used
to tell me how i'd be an old man before i knew it.
Now in my fifties, i'm getting there fast.

Very much enjoyed reading "My Winning Season" and the "Death of Santini". Certainly a tragic loss and at a relatively young age. Several HS classmates knew him attending the Citadel during the time he was there and one played on the basketball team as a sophomore during Conroy's senior year. The year before, I've read the freshman team would beat the varsity in scrimmages. Got to see them play when I attended Furman games in the old G'ville auditorium

Agreed, a great American writer. Prince of Tides was my favorite, also liked The Lords of Discipline.

RIP Pat
