Hunter Renfrow Contract extension

Mar 8, 2022, 4:59 AM

I just read speculation on what contract extension Hunter might be offered, and many comments were saying that the 17 million annual his stats indicate would be overpriced...really? I think these people are overlooking a lot of what Hunter brings to the table. He is very, very unlikely to ever have off field issues others with his on field success have. No arrests, drunken brawls, domestic abuse...etc. He has no inflated ego issues either. We Clemson fans for life also know, when the game is on the line and the play has to be made...nobody, and I mean nobody is more clutch than Renfrow. He may look more like a librarian than a football player, but third and Renfrow was a catch phrase for a reason. There is a reason that the National Campionship play with time expiring if missed went to Renfrow. There is a reason that probably the best defensive unit ever at Clemson could not cover Renfrow 1 on 1 in practice. They overlook the fact that he is one of the smartest recievers at Clemson ever, with great instincts. Forget about his lack of physical attributes, because he has enough heart and football IQ to more than make up for his lack of height. He also has great hands and almost always catches any catchable pass. Pay the man his fair market value, or regret not doing so later. Hunter is, and always has been a baller. I have watched very little of the NFL ever since it became so political, but I am huge fan of Hunter Renfrow. One of my favorite Tigers ever...always underestimated, and rarely dissapoints.

Ask the Falcons How Calvin Ridley is Working Out

Mar 8, 2022, 7:17 AM

The XBox journalists who look at Madden stats and nerd out have no idea how team dynamics work. The only time they were ever in a locker room was when they were getting popped with a towel or trying to sneak peeks at other naked dudes.

Ridley “only” makes 2.7M/yr

Mar 8, 2022, 8:45 AM

And he was drafted the year before Renfrow. So how does his situation have anything to do with whether Hunter is worth 17M/yr?

Wrong. Try $11 million a year. He was a 1st round draft pick. Remember?

Yup, this was also his contract year. Dude was fixing to get PAID and blew it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Late first his TOTAL contract was $11M

So

Mar 8, 2022, 11:05 AM

He had a 5th year option at 11M, Which Spotstrac isn’t showing, that would have put his total 5 year average at 4.4M. The Falcons were gonna exercise that option but now they don’t have to because of the suspension.

Based on statistical output

Mar 8, 2022, 8:20 AM

Pro football focus has his next contract pegged at $14M/per year which would make him one of the highest paid slot receivers in the league. I can easily see the Raiders factoring in the intangibles that you mention that could push his contract up to the 17M level. There are two huge factors we don’t know right now: What will Carr do, and how will this year’s WR class pan out. Carr and Renfrow have a rapport that rivals what we saw with Watson and Renfrow; if Carr re-signs with Raiders I’m sure he’ll be putting significant pressure on management to lock Renfrow up for the next 4 or 5 years. This year’s class is supposed to be one of the deepest WR classes ever; so, if these guys pan out it might mitigate the demand for veteran free agent receivers when you are still getting production for a few more years from guys who are still on the bargain rookie contracts.

A guy like Hunter can really make an offense go without always being fully appreciated. Honestly our offense hasn't been the same since he left.

We certainly have missed him. A guy like him doesn't get the credit because nothing about his size or speed is very exciting. He's not as likely to completely take over a game by burning his defender over and over again and catching long touchdowns down the field. He's not what you think about in terms of nightmare matchup problems like you see in other elite receivers. However, he's the guy who will keep several drives going each game with a catch on 3rd down. He runs very smart routes and is very hard to cover in 3rd and short situations. Clemson has had great receivers in the time since Renfrow, but we haven't had that consistent reliable guy to turn to on 3rd downs.

...and the HANDS! You could probably count his career drops

His speed? Really? What have you been watching the dude is fast. Yes 4:5 is fast!
But it’s more than 40 speed.
Seldom do you get to run uninhibited for 40 yards while playing Football.
But the difference in 4:4 or 4:3 or even 4:2. Is the blink of an eye…. He is fast and He is also pumped!
Y’all act like He is 165 slow and weak.

The thing that makes Hunter elite is he is fast enough

Mar 8, 2022, 11:48 AM [ in reply to Re: Hunter Renfrow Contract extension ]

but here is the key: he doesn’t lose speed when he changes direction. That coupled with the fact that he knows where he is going and the guy guarding him does not know and will lose speed when HE changes direction.

To your point, I think he is certainly worth 17M per year but I just don't think the Raiders will pay him quite that much. I think he could get 17M per year or more if he waits and goes free agent in a year so he has to weigh the option of waiting for top dollar but also taking the risk of injury this next season without locking in the big payday. He will probably get an offer of 13-15M per year for a 3-year extension and then he will have to decide if he wants to lock up his financial future now for a little less money than he might get a year from now but with the added risk associated with waiting to become a free agent. Personally, if it is a decent offer, I'd probably take the bird in the hand.

Re: Hunter Renfrow Contract extension

He certainly might take less to not have to deal with the hassle of learning a new system, and adjust a new team. My comment was based on fans who feel that such a contract is out of line. Hunter Renfrow has never gotten the credit he should. He is not 6 ft 6 inches tall, and can't show extraordinary speed. He gets it done in a different way by outsmarting the defender making multiple quick cuts to gain seperation, and for such a small guy he is fearless. He also seems to have such an understanding of the game, as his great defensive play against the Chargers on the fake punt demonstrated. Very few veteran players would have picked up on the fake quickly enough to make that play. I have heard many lament the effect of losing Trevor Lawrence and Etienne, and how badly their play is missing. In my opinion, what Clemson has been missing more, is the extremely reliable 3rd down slot reciever that Hunter Renfrow is and was for Clemson. Without a sure handed Renfrow as a threat that must not be ignored, the safeties could better concentrate on helping stop recievers like Justyn Ross. After Clemson mollywhopped Bama in 2018 in his freshman year, the following year Clemson was not as potent. They still had great speedy recievers, even after losing Ross to injury. The next year they got Ross back and still had Lawrence, but something was still missing. In my mind, that missing ingredient was Hunter Renfrow. Even in the plays that did not go to Hunter, his very high completion rate when targeted prevented defenses from concentrating their efforts on stopping the typical edge receivers, because Hunter was a threat that could not be ignored. The affect Hunter Renfrow had on Clemsons offense has never been fully appreciated, as evidenced by the fact he was not drafted until the fifth round. Every single team passed on Hunter 4 times, and many 5 times. He was the 149th pick, so I dare anyone to try and tell me there were 148 better players in that draft than Hunter. Clemson needs better QB play and OL play, but they also need another Hunter Renfrow type player.

One thing for sure...

Renfrow has a lot of fans in Vegas! They need to keep him.

Mar 8, 2022, 11:39 AM

out lately. And, for whatever reason, as a whole, being a later round draft pick tends to stay with a person their whole career, regardless of actual performance. It should be the other way around, the players who perform well IN the league should preferentially be well paid compared to higher draft round guys who have not done as well. Butt whoever said it had to make sense?

Maybe the Raiders fool me, and lock Hunter up in a nice, highly paid second deal. Butt, I consider it much more likely that he will have to test the free agent market and move on to somewhere else to really get paid at the level which his performance has shown him to be worth. Given that he was not a fan of Vegas prior to the draft, moving on wouldn't be the end of the world for him or his family.
