Reunion Followup

Jun 16, 2022, 7:26 PM

I had a great time this past weekend at my class of 1950 reunion. Only three of us were there, Russel Ashemore, from Greenville and Major General B K Sutton (Ret) also from Greenville. A good friend, class of 51, Otha (Skeet) Vaughan, originally from Seneca but now living in Huntsville, Alabama, was also there. Skeet was a jet fighter pilot during the Korean War and developed the Lunar Rover while working at The Space Center in Huntsville. The visit would have not been complete without a stop by the famous Clemson Ice Cream Bar.

Only two attendees were from a class earlier than 1950. Two men from the class of 1944 were there for their 78th reunion.

After the conclusion of the reunion, My daughter, son, and I went on to Birmingham for a brief visit with my son's friend and to visit the famous 16th Street Baptist Church Where the four little girls were killed by a bomb. Then to a Park across the street memorializing the demonstrations against the cities Jim Crow laws.

We drove on to Montgomery to visit the Legacy Museum which is a complete history of slavery in the United State. We spent from 10:00 am until 5:30pm there ands every minute was educational and emotional. After that we went several blocks to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. This is a memorial to the over 6,500 black citizens who were lynched during that dark time in our history. There is a steel box(coffin) for every county in the US where a lynching occurred, with names and dates of their murder. Oconee county had five names, the last in 1930. I was not quite one year old and my Dad was on the jury that tried the perpetrators. The trial ended after midnight and he headed home on the same road on which the lynching occurred. he was coasting down a hill and crossed a creek and the tree where the guy was killed. When he crossed the creek and pulled the gas lever down the car stopped dead right by the tree. Dad said that some weird thoughts were racing through his brain and that he probably set a new record in jumping out of the car, running around to the front, hand cranking the car , and getting back in and getting out of there.

Over all a fantastic six days with two of my children who kept me entertained and laughing the whole way.

Did y’all go on stage and get the pens and all like the 50 year guys or did y’all do that already?

We had done that during the 50th in 2000.

I told you guys weeks ago that Mr Neff was the real deal. I’m glad you are realizing how well our university is run.

Sounds like you had a great time. I wasn't even born when you graduated but we have something in common. The Skeet Vaughn you are talking about was my deceased Mom's 1st cousin and my 2nd cousin who I haven't seen in years and years. He was grown and gone before I was born but I fondly remember his Dad (also Skeet) and his Mom Ethel. His Dad was my Grandmother Carey's brother. I remember going to his Mom and Dad's house and his Dad was always tinkering with electronics. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
