Report: Notre Dame in Talks to Join ACC as Full Member

•May 13, 2017

https://www.yahoo.com/news/m/d9da7382-1f66-3dc1-a359-26dcf4c94151/undefined?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=college-football

Tim Brando of Fox Sports has reported that Notre Dame is having conversations about joining the Atlantic Coast Conference for football. Already a member in all other sports, the Fighting Irish would become the 15th full-time member if this were to happen. Should the ACC be looking for a 16th, surely the University of Connecticut would be a leading candidate.

The conference has already announced plans to launch a television network in 2019, a move which seems to be a necessity to keep up with the NCAA's other major conferences. Currently, the Big 10, Pac-12, and SEC have their own networks and are slated to rake in massive revenue gains as a result.

In a world where cable network revenues are declining, live sports has emerged as the some of the most commercially viable programming out there because of its DVR-proof nature. ESPN’s highly-publicized financial woes shouldn’t affect the ACC network’s development.

With a rabid, regionally relevant fan base and multiple successful, high-profile athletic programs, UConn would provide a full slate of programming assets across the academic year guaranteed to draw great ratings and keep subscribers from the highly-coveted New York City market through the #30 Hartford-New Haven DMA and into Boston.

Heck, UConn’s women’s basketball program has been drawing larger audiences than NBA teams.

Along with its excellent academic reputation, our fairest white and blue would appear to be the snuggest fit of any school available if the ACC looks to the “Group of 5” to even things out after adding Notre Dame. The ACC may even see UConn’s greatest weakness in the realignment beauty pageant, tackle football, as less of a factor given the new variables involved.

As Husky fans know all too well, however, it is never this cut and dry. First of all, nothing may come of these reports. But even if Notre Dame does join in full, UConn is hardly a shoe-in.

UConn may have the best résumé, but will also have opposition from within the ACC. Remember, and never forget, they wanted UConn instead of Pittsburgh but BC was able to successfully block the move by campaigning the conference’s football powers against it. The leadership at BC did it to protect their regional turf.

This time around, Syracuse and Pittsburgh may feel the same way and for all we know Duke or UNC may be hesitant to throw a lifeline to a potential hoops powerhouse. Additionally, the ACC could snag a 16th member from elsewhere in the “power five,” such as an Oklahoma or Texas from the vulnerable Big 12.

It is still so very early, but these are not the tweet thread ramblings of anonymous, oddly-named Twitter accounts. Notre Dame wants better access to the College Football Playoff and joining the ACC accomplishes that. The money may even be a secondary issue, believe it or not.

The UConn Blog has long postulated that this is one of the strongest possibilities for the Huskies should a P5 invite emerge. We’ll be sure to monitor this situation as it develops.

Sounds like a speculation article

May 15, 2017, 12:49 PM

There is no mention of the ACC actually having real interest in adding Uconn, just the writers view they would be a candidate. Clemson and FSU hold the real power now in the ACC w/ football being king and driving force of an ACC Network. We would veto the heck of out Uconn.

Bring it on. I'll take any of the above mentioned options. And we should strategically realign the divisions as part of this to even out the Atlantic and Coastal divisions for football sake.

WVU

May 15, 2017, 12:56 PM

Of course, Texas or OK would be options 1A and 1B, but WVU would be a great regional fit, and the academics argument flew out the window when Louisville came in.

May 15, 2017, 1:01 PM

not then go WVU. Penn State would be awesome and is not a natural fit in the Big 10. If they turn down the ACC I'd go WVU. Decent to good football and basketball with a rabid football fanbase. Academics can't be that much worse then Louisville.

I'd personally love to see a 16 team ACC w/ Notre Dame and another football school and make a North/South division at NC/VA line. 9 game conference schedule playing all 7 in division annually then rotating 2 in North division yearly so that you play all conference schools every 4 years. No permanent rival in opposite division.

Re: I would offer Penn State, let them decide to turn us down or

May 15, 2017, 1:21 PM

Agree. Now that we have Pitt, Penn State is a geographic fit. They are also a better academic and football fit. We have more than enough basketball schools. Football pays the bills.

The reason they stayed in the Big 10 was hockey. Huge NE and Midwest sport. The B10 would fight to keep them. My pick would be Univ. of Cincinnati or West Virginia. Penn St. would be fine, but what about Maryland or South Carolina if you want another member?

UConn would be Wake Forest (north), but their programs would benefit obviously.

Go Tigers!

Re: WVU

May 15, 2017, 1:48 PM [ in reply to WVU ]

I couldn't find it but have been told that the ACC would have to lower it's academic standard for WVU to join. I didn't want them in the ACC for the longest time due to them being a bunch of hillbilly couch burners but Louisville fans took that one away.

16th Team Thoughts

May 15, 2017, 1:19 PM

I think IF Notre Dame goes All In then I could see them HIGHLY recommending take NAVY as the 16th team even a a deal breaker. They have had a bond that goes back to WWI but was etched in stone during WWII with an ROTC commitment that still exists today. I could see Clemson backing ND on this effort as we have had a commitment our ROTC program. Here is a short article on their relationship.

May 15, 2017, 1:25 PM

Clemson doesn't want Navy. Why in the name of the baby Jesus would anybody want Navy in the ACC.

Navy sucks! The ACC isn't a charity organization.

Not convinced we are expanding, but should we do it, I can see Penn State being the logical likely choice.

It's not really a question of not wanting Navy but I've always heard that they and ND were joined at the hip as far as any conference move goes.

Nothing wrong with Navy in the conference, it is a highly selective institution and fairly competitive on the football field.

Since 2002, starting with the Paul Johnson era, and through current, they have been pretty good.

Re: REPORT: Notre Dame in talks to join ACC as full member(link)

May 15, 2017, 3:25 PM

That makes no sense at all. To have one team that far west?

What that conference needed to do was bring in Houston, BYU, AF, and Colorado last fall.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

First of all, Brando mentioned the possibility of ND joining

May 15, 2017, 6:31 PM

several months ago. At that time, he was talking about in the next 3 to 5 years. Everyone connected denied that was in the works. The linked site is a UCONN site. The Uconn fans are looking for any way out of the AAC. The only way they even have a remote chance of going to the ACC is if ND joins in full and the ACC needs a 16th member. Even then, their chances are small. I haven't done an internet google search to see if Tim Brando actually had any think new to say today. It is likely the linked piece was written simply based on what he said months ago, which was pure speculation.

I would like to see Notre Dame join in full, but their fans and alums are adamently against it. They are a different bunch. They look at their independence as a great point of pride and think it would be terrible to even think of joining. Never mind the fact that all of their other athletic teams have been in a conference for decades when you count Big East and ACC.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

now I have found a blurb that is not a fan site and it is

May 15, 2017, 4:59 PM

reporting that there are talks. I'm still very skeptical.
