Replay commentary on Rodgers’ run: atrocious

Sep 18, 2019, 1:08 PM

The commentary during the review of Amari Rodgers’ sideline run was embarrassingly bad. Aside from what’s-his-name talking about some “indentation” in the sideline (which is clearly visible BEFORE the left foot ever gets there) not one person seems to think about how an accelerating athlete doesn’t put his/her heels down. It’s pretty obvious since the heels don’t come down before or after the step they reviewed.

I can give McDonough a pass but Herbie should have known.

Normally this wouldn’t be worth discussion but the whole production Saturday night was pretty bad. Most of it was timing issues which is the director’s fault (whoever that was) but Herbie and Sean even admitted that they were planning on peripheral things to talk about other than the game. I don’t mind human interest stories, but it really interfered with the game and their analysis was clearly affected.

Would you prefer, "yep he's in", and then 5 minutes of silence while the refs finish whatever it is that they do during a review?

I took McDonut as being mostly tongue and cheek as he even mentioned at one point that he was really hoping he was out of bounds due to his Syracuse bias.

Kirk is either left to say nothing and make for bad tv or try to make assumptions about what the officials could be taking so long to look at.

I think the issue was more with the length of the review than with the announcers. It seemed obvious pretty quickly and the review should have reflected that.

I do second your complaint about the production of the game.

I can't see any reason that any sideline interview or personal interest piece should ever cause tv viewers to miss a play in the game. I think that should be true even if the game is 75-0.

I found myself saying, out loud, "Please Maria, can we watch a little bit of the ballgame." Probably interlaced with a few juicy expletives.

The was probably the worst I've ever heard Herbie. The entire broadcast seemed to be about Sean's award. And come on, ABC...the length of the commercial breaks was excessive!! I went back and reviewed, and the average commercial break was 3:10... and that averaged in the 30-second timeouts. The third quarter ended as the clock hit the 3 hour mark since the opening kickoff. TV is going to be the ruin of college football.

That said, Go Tigers! Bury the Niners.

I was on the road listening to the Clemson broadcast. They called him out and even said if they didn't overturn it the crowd was going to go crazy because they showed him stepping out on their scoreboard.

It was pretty clear on TV that he was not out

You could see grass under his heel.

It was kinda like when our guy wasn't ruled out a few years ago when he stepped on a coots hand that was out of bounds. Didn't touch even though it was over the edge

I thought the most telling view was from the sideline.

They never zoomed it in and the camera was pretty far from the field, but I thought it showed very clearly that there was green between his foot and the sidelines. I wasn't sure why the announcers never commented on that angle.

I was listening, as well, and was really surprised at how clearly he was in when I watched a recording of the game. I went 3 or 4 times trying to see what would make someone question the call.

Not sure how anyone could see it on their scoreboard.

Their video screen is a 52" Vizio.

I agree with the poor production. The “human interest” interviews as done by the sideline reporter were compelling. These and other distractions lessened the game quality by destroying continuity. I feel by watching the network ads placed before me they are contractually obligated to offer the game in it’s entirety. Furthermore, I couldn’t understand much of what she was saying. The game is the feature in any sport. When an official, a commentator, a reporter or otherwise insert themselves over the spirit of the game then they have run afoul.

Gotta agree - the whole production needed a few more planning meetings or more experienced directors or techs.

One of the worst - the CU TD pass nullified for holding - and NO replay of the play, the alleged holding - just wipe the points off the board and go to another SYR "feature" - like how many famous media grads Cuse has.
