Fridge.net: Ice maker

Nov 16, 2021, 8:11 AM

So I have one of those fancy fridges with the french doors and the pull out drawer with the ice maker in the fridge section.

Now the ice maker isn't working.

I've gotten maybe 12 cubes since Saturday.

Tried to call GE and can't get anybody.

Anybody had any issues with their in door ice maker and if so, how did you fix it?

I'm wondering if it's not frozen somewhere in there and I can use a hair dryer to get it unclogged.

Not knowing the model, I don't know if this will work for GE

Nov 16, 2021, 8:23 AM

but have you tried getting liquor drunk and shooting it with a high-caliber rifle?

Turn ice maker off and defrost it with a hairdryer or blowtorch

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

if that doesn't work you can

Nov 16, 2021, 8:29 AM

replace the refrigerator with a refrigerator that has an ice maker that works

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually just did that with a hair dryer

Nov 16, 2021, 8:37 AM [ in reply to Re: Fridge.net: Ice maker ]

Not sure if I defrosted it or not though

There's really no downside here.

Nov 16, 2021, 8:39 AM

That fridge is gonna look GREAT on your front porch!

If there is ice stuck in the 'chute' it will stop working

Nov 16, 2021, 8:29 AM

at least that is what my son's did.

Clean yer chute.

I've stuck my fist as far up the chute as possible

Nov 16, 2021, 8:38 AM

no ice. I'm thinking I got a frozen spot somewhere further back where I can't reach.

Maybe if I can get up to my elbow

Replacing the assembly wasn't too difficult on our LG.

Nov 16, 2021, 8:43 AM

The hardest element was finding the right part (LG likes giving the same part number to multiple versions of product). If the other methods work, you might try replacing it yourself.

The fridge is like 2 weeks old, max

Not so fast, Fireball purchased an LG

and had to call warranty on it a month in. In my case, warranty repair nerds replaced entire assembly. But in my case the h2o never froze.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

Have you tried to reset it?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’ve got a maytag that often pulls that stunt.

Nov 16, 2021, 8:54 AM

What I have determined the root cause to be is my wife and daughter are incapable of fully closing the refrigerator door all the way, so everything is running hard and it freezes up. I just let the bring the temp up a bit in the fridge a level and it thaws the ice line enough for the ice to drop. Ain’t dead from rotted food yet.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Does anyone have an ice cube maker that works?

Nov 16, 2021, 9:23 AM

I've found these to be much more reliable.

my fridge/freezer is 20+ years old

Nov 16, 2021, 9:26 AM [ in reply to Does anyone have an ice cube maker that works? ]

still makes cubes (actually kind of half-moon shapes) like a champ.

NOT a door model, it's the simple back-left corner icemaker with the removable bucket underneath. Can empty the bucket in the AM and it's overflowing with ice again that night.

Simple is best. ALWAYS.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, but Samsung. Turned it off. Just use the freezer's

Nov 16, 2021, 9:47 AM

Samsung repair guy said the in-the-fridge ice makers are #### and always fail. We use the dispenser just for water. I'm not so lazy that I can't open the drawer, scoop a scoop of ice and reclose the drawer.

New fridges suck, but APM recommends Samsung.

Nov 16, 2021, 10:12 AM

They really do suck by design. We now have a Frigidaire and it sucks.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg2016_nascar_champ.gif flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LG seems to be the best

Nov 16, 2021, 10:37 AM

From the ones we and our kids have bought lately.

I hate our Frigidaire.

GE is ok.

We do empty the ice on a regular basis.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-fatherg-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Eh. I hate our LG. The parts people hate working with them.

Nov 16, 2021, 11:49 AM

But I get the gist that nobody likes their fridge.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

in fridge freezers suck for this very reason...

Nov 16, 2021, 10:31 AM

the freezer's defrost cycle freezes it up over time and it has to be defrosted. I had an LG like that and eventually just gave up on the POS icemaker and bought a counter top model to make ice.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-fordprefect.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So I've unplugged it for 15 minutes

Nov 16, 2021, 10:40 AM

with the doors open. Then used the hair dryer on the ice making thing.

I don't think it's the water line since I'm getting water out the dispenser. Must be ice backed up in the maker

I like your funny words magic man

Do

Nov 16, 2021, 10:45 AM

empty that sucker on a regular basis if you do not use ice. Keep it moving, it's like your bowels, once it gets plugged up, you're f'ed.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-fatherg-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I TOLD YOU.

Nov 16, 2021, 10:53 AM

Those french door fridges with the ice cube makers are a design flaw. It will never work. NEVER.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have one that works great, but you have to

Nov 16, 2021, 11:00 AM

keep the ice moving though.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-fatherg-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's the thing, if they sit there too long and the temp

Nov 16, 2021, 11:01 AM

drops, they melt a little and then refreeze and all get stuck together.
